Tutoring review by Rebecca in Morris Plains, NJ
The student has started to work with expressions that involve variables. He is learning to combine like terms. We extended this learning by including variables that had a number value multiplied to them. With these problems, he had to multiply all of the number multiplied to the variables and then add the number of variables present in the expression to determine the exponent. It is clear that he has learned the rules for combining like terms, but does not always understand the mathematical concept behind the rule. He knew to add like variables and write that number as an exponent, but he did not quite understand that the exponent represented the number of times that variable would be multiplied to itself. Going forward I want to bring in mathematical concepts worksheets so that he can learn the math behind the rule. I believe this will help him from making simple errors when he is rushed on a quiz or test.

We reviewed over algebraic expressions, rate units, simple interest, slope, domain and range, PEMDAS, inequalities, etc. In addition on working on concepts for his math review we also covered his history review for chapter 2. Lastly, I made him a study plan for the weekend which covers what concepts he should focus on each day until the start of his midterms.
