Tutoring review by Caleb in Ridgefield, NJ
This week we covered scientific notation and exponents, specifically negative and to the 0 power. The student had a bit of trouble remembering the concepts. We reviewed the concept and I emphasized to her and the mom that concepts are important to know. Overall her grades have been good.

We covered a few conceptual terms regarding DNA structure at different levels again: genes, double helix, chromosomes. This was mainly in regards to a worksheet that the student had for homework. We also talked about RNA and mRNA, although it didn't seem to be on his worksheet. I was impressed that he was asking on his own - it seems as though he heard the term in class. The rest of the time was spent going over a math worksheet. It mainly involved multiplying with decimal points. The student is perfectly capable of doing this level of math on his own (and doing it well). His main issue was skipping steps and not keeping track of his decimals. I gave him a few pointers about how many decimal places to keep in his answers. The student would work on the problem and I would simply scan his process to make sure it was correct. Also, he was good about keeping himself on track. He seems pretty intent on making the most of the tutoring sessions, which makes both of our jobs easier.

Tutoring review by Jayada in Ridgefield, NJ
We completed the review packet for the final semester exam provided by his school teacher. We reviewed the construction of inscribed squares and hexagons in a circle, solved algebraic equations to find the side lengths of the quadrilaterals, 2 column similarity proofs, transformations, application problems to find scale factor, area, and volumes of 3D shapes. The student had trouble visualizing the information given in the word problems, so we cut a tomato from the center and also took the cross sections of the 1/4 of the tomato to understand the difference between the radii of the sphere and the cross sectioned circle that formed in a tomato.

The student worked on homework and indicated he is becoming comfortable with the material. We progressed topics today to include FOIL and factoring quadratics, solving for x, and arithmetic and geometric number series. The student will do practice from the book he checked out from the library, as well as work on worksheets I email him.

Tutoring review by Ahmad in Ridgefield, NJ
Today we covered factorization and the quadratic formula. Assuming that ax^2 + bx+ c=0, we picked 2 factors of c that multiplied to c and add up to b. She did not take long to understand that. She was having trouble with the quadratic formula. Because she had a difficult time identifying a, b, and c , she could not substitute them into the quadratic formula. This is all we covered. She paid attention to everything I said, and was comfortable with the material by the end of the session.
