In addition to increasing your knowledge and skills, these services can also increase your confidence in your Latin abilities as well.
Though Latin is a "dead" language, it is one of the most important and influential languages in the world. It is the direct ancestor of the modern-day Romance languages which include, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese. Latin is also an important influence on English. Because Latin was the language of science, medicine, academia, and the study of law, people in those professions can deepen their understanding of their field through learning Latin. Latin can also be a great way to fulfill your foreign language graduation requirement at a school like Belmont High School or Stebbins High School. For those in undergraduate or graduate-level programs at schools such as Wright State University or the University of Dayton, learning Latin may be essential to a Classical studies major or similar programs.
What can I learn about during Dayton Latin lessons?
Latin shares a number of similarities with English that can act as helpful entry points for those learning the language. However, Latin is also a very different language than English and it requires a different set of skills and knowledge. One of the similarities between English and Latin is that both languages use the same alphabet. In fact, the English alphabet originated with Latin. This makes reading and writing much easier and removes a barrier to reading comprehension. Additionally, many English words draw their origin from Latin words. Words such as "fortune," "sinister," or "adolescent" have very similar forms in both languages. This can make Latin vocabulary a bit easier to learn and remember.
The key difference between English and Latin is that Latin is an inflected language. In an inflected language, certain parts of a word are changed to reflect their grammatical role in a sentence. Nouns, adjectives, and adverbs are inflected to reflect which part of speech they are, whether they are singular or plural, and their grammatical gender. In Latin, all nouns have a gender, even inanimate objects. Adjectives must match the noun they modify. Verbs have endings that indicate whether they are singular or plural and the tense of the verb. Additionally, Latin's system of inflections makes word order far more fluid in the language. Because the word itself tells you what part of speech it is, words can be placed nearly anywhere in the sentence. This is contrary to English which requires fairly standardized word order because so few English words are inflected.
Learning Latin in a structured context can help you study in a methodical fashion. An expert can point you in the direction of the skills and concepts that are important for your level of knowledge. This can help you build your language learning off of a firm foundation of skills. Additionally, learning in either a group or one-on-one context can give you regular opportunities to hold practice conversations. Conversing in Latin is a great way to practice several skills at the same time. You must understand what your partner is saying, formulate your own response, use the proper word-endings, and organize your thoughts coherently. Regular conversation in a language can internalize the concepts and skills you are learning and deepen your understanding of the language.
