Tutoring review by Kristina in Dunellen, NJ
The student proudly reported that he made the honor roll last quarter, improving both his grades in Math and Science. After catching up about school, we began with Science. He has a quiz on Monday about the earth, sun and planets, so I tested his knowledge from the PowerPoint notes he gave me. For the concepts he didn't know, we talked them through and devised ways to remember them. After we felt confident in his preparation, we moved on to his Math homework. The student is currently working on Statistics, specifically compound, independent and dependent events. He did not understand how to draw tree diagrams for compound events or the different between independent and dependent events, but he was strong in his ability to draw tables and compute probabilities. We practiced those weaker areas, and at the end of his homework he was confident.

We covered a lot of chain-rule, and some fundamental theorems of calculus - important difference between velocity and speed - distance traveled problems - and chain-rule with inverse functions. The student appears to be catching on quite well and extra practice is always helpful. He continues to have a great attitude and commitment.

Tutoring review by Michael in Dunellen, NJ
Today was our first meeting. I think it went very well. I asked the student to share an essay she had written recently. By examining this piece of writing, I was able to see some of her strengths and challenges. The issue with her writing primarily seems to be her lack of writing opportunities in high school. This should change this year because she has been bumped up to Honors English. I made some suggestions and asked her to rewrite the essay for the next session. After discussing her essay in detail, she and I looked over her SAT and ACT English answers. I will look at these answers more closely in preparation for our next class next Wednesday. She strikes me as a highly motivated student. I think we will see substantial progress.

Tutoring review by John in Dunellen, NJ
The student and I discussed and reviewed topics regarding radians, trig ratios, linear velocity, and angular velocity. We first learned methods to convert from degrees to radians and vice versa. She was very good at converting radians to degrees. Next, we reviewed the six trigonometric ratios. We derived them from general triangles first with sine and cosine. We saw that the other four are all based on the two (sine/cosine). We learned to calculate the ratios given triangles but also learned to generate triangles and the other ratios given one of the ratios. She proved to be pretty adept at these skills. The last skill we developed was the calculation of angular velocity and linear velocity from movement based on a rotating mass. We saw that angular velocity was the measure of the rotation speed. With the size of the rotating mass and the angular velocity, we calculated linear velocity. We focused on determining what questions required because she could apply the formulas well but was sometimes confused regarding the goal of the question.
