We reviewed a few spelling items we've previously worked on, like the sh- sounds made in words like patient. Then we moved to reading comprehension. Today's exercise on submarines really caught the student's attention. He did really well with the vocabulary too. He also did a great job on the next piece we read about Saturn, answering all of the questions without having to go back to the article. Then, we reviewed verbs. This time he did a wonderful job at identifying the verbs and not mistaking nouns. We wrapped the session up with states and their abbreviations. Although he was unfamiliar with the concept, he caught it quickly and was able to match the abbreviations the states well.

Tutoring review by Steven in Hawthorne, NJ
The student was working on problem with friction, with force and free-body diagrams, Newton's 2nd law, and uniform circular motion. He was very good with setting up and solving problems, and doing algebra, so we mainly worked with how to read the problems, and what certain phrases mean (particularly regarding friction and the "just moving" criterion). He seemed to be able to parse these problems quite well.

The student has shown great improvement and got a 95 in her last exam. Her understanding and mastering of the topics shows me she needs to be challenged more in class. The teacher gave her additional material and even allowed her to teach some of it to the rest of the class.

Tutoring review by Susan in Hawthorne, NJ
The student and I went over graded work that his teacher provided. We looked for errors that occurred frequently. These errors were categorized into rushing, skipping problems, handwriting that was not legible, and occasionally not understanding a concept. For the most part, it was more about rushing and decreased neatness. We talked about how it's important that his grades reflect his true abilities. We corrected work as well to determine the types of errors and learn from them.

The student did a really great job on the math section when he took the test the first time in December, but the verbal and reading sections could have been stronger. We spent our time finding words that he is unfamiliar with that may be on the test next time and made flashcards with pictures to help him remember them.
