Varsity Tutors can be there for you throughout your language learning adventure with an Austin Spanish course. When you decide to begin learning Spanish, whether it is because you are a student at area institutions like Westlake High School or Westwood High School, you are studying at the University of Texas, or because you love to learn, our languages courses are the best around. Plenty of people don't learn optimally when in a conventional classroom, and learning a second language is hard - whether this is your first time diving into Spanish or whether you already know some of the linguistic skills needed to gain a command of this language.
When you are learning Spanish, it is important to consider a few factors. One of these is the fact that you will have to delve into the necessary communication skills used with other people. This can mean writing in Spanish or speaking it out loud. An Austin Spanish course is able to provide the expertise of an experienced Spanish teacher as well as the immersion that a secondary language requires. The teacher will be there for you, whether you know some Spanish already or whether you are a complete novice, encouraging you to practice and offering several needed language learning tools.
There are many countries that speak Spanish natively, including nearly 20 that consider it their official language. These countries include Spain and the majority of Central and South American countries, including Chili, Argentina, Guatemala, Ecuador, Peru, and Mexico. It is the most studied language in the United States as well as the second most commonly used tongue. 45 million people in the United States alone can speak Spanish either as their first language or as their second one. More than 430 million people speak Spanish natively, making it the second most used language across the globe, following Mandarin Chinese.
Are you learning Spanish because you want to make new friends? Perhaps you want to dive into new cultures that are based around this language, or maybe you're interested in doing business in a world that is becoming more globalized by the day and favors those who are bilingual. Perhaps you are planning to learn multiple languages and you know that learning Spanish will help give you an advantage when studying other similar languages, such as Italian and French. Whatever your reason for learning, enrolling in an Austin Spanish class could give you the skills you need to pursue your personal goals.
What material does an Austin Spanish course cover?
If you are a native English speaker, you can capitalize on the ability to expand your Spanish vocabulary by recognizing the word patterns found in many English-Spanish cognates. English and Spanish are somewhat related, as English has adopted many of its words from French, which is a sister language to Spanish. Both Spanish and French are romance languages, along with Portuguese, Italian, and Romanian. Keep in mind, though, that these patterns are not always helpful. In some cases, English and Spanish overlap, while at other times, they are completely different. For example, an argumento in Spanish may be referring to the plot of a story. The words that sound alike in the two languages while actually having two completely separate meanings are referred to as false friends.
You will also learn about the rolled "R" when learning Spanish. For some people, this presents no problem and is easily learned, whereas for others, it can be a source of grief and confusion. Your Spanish teacher can help you learn when it is appropriate and how to best achieve this sound.
Another thing you will learn in your Spanish course is the complexities of "ser vs. estar". The fact that there are two ways to say "to be" and that they each mean different things can lead to some confusion for both novices and those who have some experience with the Spanish language. The verb "ser" is used when someone is referring to a permanent trait, and the verb "estar" is used to refer to a transient state. The nuances that underlie these verbs are difficult to explain in one simple rule, so learning which form of the verb to use can be difficult for some Spanish learners. Don't worry, though. Your Spanish course will present you with a wide variety of ways to practice and discuss these grammatical intricacies and your Spanish teacher will be there every step of the way.
How do I learn in an Austin Spanish course?
The Austin Spanish class is an interactive classroom that is all online. It provides you with the ability to speak and participate with your other classmates as though they are right there with you. You also have an experienced Spanish teacher that will be there to guide you and correct you as you delve into this language - whether it is your first time learning it or if you are brushing up on your comprehension skills.
Some teachers may offer to teach the class in Spanish depending on your comfort level and how skilled you have become. This can encourage immersion and provide you with the opportunity to really dive into the language.
If you are struggling with a particular subject and need some one-on-one quality time with the Spanish teacher, our Austin Spanish course will allow you to reserve this time so you can get the help you need.
The classes begin on a rolling monthly basis, so getting started can be quick and efficient. Being an online class makes a commute unnecessary and also provides the benefit of being able to pick your class times, whether you need to study during the day, over the weekend, or at night.

My ultimate desire is not only to help students understand subjects that they may be struggling with, but to help them cultivate a interest in and passion for the material itself. Understanding and ability in a subject is great, but a true desire...

I'm an experienced teacher and tutor with a Bachelors in English from the University of Alabama and a Masters in Literature and the Humanities from St. Edward's University, looking to help my students share in my love of learning!... The answer is out there. I really do think that, no matter what the problem is, a solution can be found if we all work hard enough!... Discuss what subjects or concepts the student is struggling with, and what study methods just haven't worked for them in the past. That way, we can tackle the problem from a new angle and with a fresh approach!
