Tutoring review by Jerry in Fanwood, NJ
Today we first went over the derivatives and the tangent line. My strategy of helping the student understand the definition of the derivative is "take the limit of the difference quotient as h is approaching to 0". I gave him some exercises on this. I also suggested to him to take the problem step by step. After that, we jumped to the topic of finding the tangent line. I showed him that the tangent line was given by y = mx + b, where m is the derivative at the given point, and b is obtained when y, m, and x are known. I showed him 3 examples on this, and he began to master this topic. We then headed into vectors--I showed him how to take the dot product and cross product, and how to find the angle between the two vectors. I went over the formulas with him and how to take the determinants of matrices, and he got them. I mentioned the fact that the dot product was commutative, but the cross product wasn't--switching the order would negate the answer. We ended the lesson here.

Finished studying for the student's final exam. Reviewed the rest of his study packet and went over formulas and processes from the last session. I think he is well prepared for the test- he knows to check all his answers, especially signs, and use his calculator to his advantage.

The student has made a lot of progress on her application essays and supplements--and there is still a lot more to be done. Right now we are waiting for feedback on her Common App essay from her teachers and guidance counselor before we start working on the final edits. As always, she was a pleasure to work with.

Tutoring review by John in Fanwood, NJ
Today the student and I covered more on lines and planes before covering linear algebra material. For the linear algebra we covered what it means for a set to span another set. We covered how row operations are a way to solve a system of linear equations. We also discussed what the null space is and means. The session went very well and she seems to have a firm understanding of the material.

We reviewed some concepts related to light energy and discussed upcoming material. The new material concerned the Bohr model of the atom and how electron transitions produce line spectra. The student needed help with the new topics, but I believe that he will pick them up more quickly when he sees them in his class.

Tutoring review by Susan in Fanwood, NJ
In this session, we worked on conics. We changed the formula of an ellipses from standard to general in order to find the value of a, b, and c, which would help us to find the foci points. We also briefly reviewed the topic of symmetry with the x and y axis as well as the origin.
