Recent North Arlington Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Jessica in North Arlington, NJ
With final exams in three day, this session was focused on studying for the tests the student is to take. I prepared flashcards for each subject so we could take our time reviewing. Because Spanish and science are the more challenging classes, I spent more time on those subjects. We went from one subject to another multiple times in different orders to change up what he thought was going to be next. By the end of the session we had reviewed each subject two or three times and created a study schedule he can use for the day before and morning of each test. I also left him with the flashcards I created so he can use them to study on his own. I also encouraged him to place the Spanish note cards around the house so he can feel more comfortable with the words. I ended the session by giving him a positive outlook on the test he is going to take.

Today, we had a wonderful first session. We spent most of the time reviewing quadratic equations and manipulating them to find the vertex, intercepts, domain, range, and other functional aspects. We reviewed the concept of completing the square, and he seemed to be much more comfortable with it after the review.

Tutoring review by Brent in North Arlington, NJ
The student and I were able to complete three homework assignments during our session at the library today. The last homework assignment covered section 8.5, a section that her class has not yet covered. I taught her two methods for simplifying complex (multi-tiered) fractions with quadratic expressions. The student had a definite preference for method 1, but showed academic maturity in deciding to solve problems using method 2 when given the choice, in order to practice and improve on the method that she has a harder time with. She demonstrated a phenomenal ability to juggle multiple steps in her head simultaneously; she can often skip steps without having to write intermediate work down. The student is now in great shape with sections 8.3-8.5.

The student and I worked on translation of functions for the entirety of the session. He seemed to have a better grasp of it by the end of the session. I plan to bring some reinforcement material to gauge if he truly grasped the material to the next session. Going forward he is planning to inform me of what's going on in school prior to our sessions so that we can have extra practice materials, and also get a jump start on whatever may be the next lesson in class.

The student's mom and I talked about the student's needs and she shared comments from his teacher. I gave him two assessments - one in math and the other was ELA. I was able to get a better idea of where he is academically and can better plan the focus of our sessions. I will see him again on Thursday. It was enjoyable talking with him.
