Recent Roselle Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Samuel in Roselle, NJ
This was a good session with the student. This session focused primarily on the fundamentals of trigonometry as in basic sine, cosine and trigonometric relationships. He likes some of the background for why stuff happens, so we got a little bit into some more complex ideas in regards to where these operations come from and why the are important. He has a handle on it and they are going to continue the section the following day in class.

Tutoring review by Rachel in Roselle, NJ
The student worked on her science homework which covered phase changes. We talked about how to determine phase shifts by looking at graphs of temperature over time. She also worked on her geometry homework which was over trigonometric functions. This is something she definitely needs to work on more but by the end of the session she was getting it.

Tutoring review by Adam in Roselle, NJ
We covered algebra at a seventh grade level, as well as general test-taking advice. The student initially struggled most with setting up equations and reducing equations to a simplified form. As the session went on, he become more comfortable and effective at this. The student had a great attitude. The student learned the cross multiplication strategy for dealing with proportional equations. The student still had worksheets from their school to work through. Additional practice in algebra would help solidify the skills and concepts we discussed.

Tutoring review by Matthew in Roselle, NJ
Our second session was equally productive to the first. The student is a quick study, and she has a lot stamina. After two hours of math, she was still going strong. Yesterday, the material that we covered was a mixture of review and new concepts. She has expressed a concern regarding quadratic equations. For the time being (yesterday and the next two sessions), I anticipate spending a lot of time on graphing parabolas as well as factoring, completing the square, and becoming facile with the quadratic formula. Yesterday, she and I worked specifically on becoming acquainted and comfortable with the primary characteristics of a quadratic function (x-intercepts, y-intercepts, vertex, axis of symmetry). The student caught on to the lessons quickly. Any mistakes she made were more of simple errors than comprehension. For me, this is far less worrisome because they are easy to correct as she gains more practice and refines her process. So far so good.

Tutoring review by Andrew in Roselle, NJ
The student and I covered polynomials, perfect squares and quadratic equations. He struggled most with perfect squares. He was interested and motivated to understand the material reviewed. I included visual aids and practice problems with step-by-step processes. I left him some practice problems to reinforce concepts, and he will catch up very quickly. His quality score is improving significantly with an average of 90% on assignments and quizzes. Wins from this session include multiple concepts covered and grades improving significantly.
