Tutoring review by Vincent in South Amboy, NJ
Today, we looked over an assignment that the student had over transforming graphs of quadratic functions. I started by writing out the vertex-form equation of a quadratic function and asking him to describe how each part affected the corresponding graph. Once he did that, he was more comfortable with how and why changing certain values in a function resulted in changing the shape or position of the graph. From there, the assignment had not been very difficult for him. There was a word problem that involved setting up an equation for a falling object, but he got through it after we discussed what each of the given values represented. In the review section at the end of the assignment, he showed an marked increase in comfort with identifying different types of factoring situations and handling them accordingly.

We started going through the review packet provided to the student by the math department. This first part of the packet involved the distance rate time problems, mixture problems, and some of the work problems. These are definitely difficult to get used to so the student had a little trouble with them at first. After he got the hang of how to use the charts to simplify the problems, they got much easier for him.

Tutoring review by Gail in South Amboy, NJ
The student had done well on her geometry homework. We are now finished with math. Today's chapter was on grammar and usage. It was quite a thorough review of these topics, and the student's slight hesitation here and there as we worked through the exercises suggested how helpful it would prove. Her homework is the rest of this very long chapter.

Today we covered some material from the student's pre-calc class, and we also reviewed part of a test she had taken. We covered exponentials, logarithms, and asymptotes. Specific points include how the "a" in the expression a^x cannot be negative in the real number system and how it is okay for a function to cross a horizontal or slanted asymptote.
