The Secondary School Admissions Test is a test that many independent schools worldwide use to measure an applicant’s reading, verbal and quantitative skills; it is a piece of the information that schools use to determine whether a student is admitted or not. There are three levels of this specific exam: elementary level, middle level, and upper level. Students in grades 3-11 take the test. Also called the SSAT, there are different subject-related tests, including a test in mathematics.
If you’re looking for a study aid to help you prepare for the SSAT Upper Level Math exam, look no further than Varsity Tutors’ Learning Tools Learn by Concept for SSAT Upper Level Math. Learn by Concept is an interactive syllabus that makes it easy for you to explore the different content areas that may be on the SSAT Upper Level Math exam.
The SSAT Upper Level Math syllabus begins with algebra, moves into data analysis and probability, and then geometry. The syllabus also covers topics in number concepts and operations, as well as sequences and series. When you choose a topic to study, you’ll be given a sample question to solve, along with five possible answers. Once you solve the problem, you can scroll through the possible answers and you’ll find the correct answer identified, along with an explanation of how to solve the problem to get the appropriate answer.
In the algebra section, you’ll find questions on finding absolute value, solving word problems, finding equations of lines, and finding the properties of an exponent. The data analysis and probability section includes information on recognizing trends, interpreting Venn diagrams and reading graphs, and finding the probability of an outcome. For example, the outcomes sections include questions like how likely is it that someone will grab a green marble, if there are 15 marbles in a jar and 3 are green.
The geometry section of the Learn by Concept tool includes guidance on area and circumference of a circle, areas and perimeters of polygons, coordinate geometry, slope, transformation, and intercepts. You can work on finding whether lines are parallel or perpendicular; finding area, height, and length of triangles; and volume of three dimensional figures. Basic mathematic concepts, like addition, subtraction, and multiplication are included in the syllabus as well.
If you struggle with rational numbers, you’re in luck. This SSAT Upper Level Math study material includes an exploration of complex and compound fractions, as well as decimals with fractions, and percentages. For example, you’ll find explanation of how to find a fraction from a percentage, and decimal equivalents of fractions, among other topics.
You can settle in for an in depth SSAT Upper Level Math test review session with this Learning Tool, or you can connect and look up a topic or two; because this particular syllabus tool is available online, it does not require that you sit down and complete all of the questions in a single session.
In addition to the SSAT Upper Level Math syllabus, Varsity Tutors’ Learning Tools include other study aids, including Flashcards, hundreds of Practice Tests, and a Question of the Day series that gives you a random mathematical question, in this case, to solve, to help you determine how ready you are for the SSAT Upper Level Math test.
