I also give amazing tips/life hacks on how to get the most out of studying and improve memory. Knowing that people love to hear how smart they are, I never fail to let my tutees know, while objectively letting them know ways they need to improve. positive reinforcement / affirmation - it helps people learn better. In my free time I play sports (basketball, football, any sport with a ball) and instruments (piano, and guitar). To that extent, tutoring to me has always been a mentor-ship as well as a learning experience. I am a passionate problem-solver but patient and flexible with my teaching pace. In terms of tutoring style, I like to prepare a comprehensive review of the topics students are struggling with. During my gap years before medical school, I am working as a Research Assistant at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in the Department of Transplant Surgery. Though I enjoy working in research, I truly love educating others in anyway that I can. My most recent tutoring experience was during the summer of 2014, in which I taught algebra to a middle school student. In high school, I tutored many of my peers in Spanish, mathematics, chemistry, psychology, and biology. I personally love tutoring both math and biology because the material is interesting and also fun to learn! As a tutor, I always try to relate the material at hand to specific interests of my student. I find that a student understands topics better when we find a way to equate his or her own hobby to the material. With that, I really seek out what the student enjoys doing and use their hobbies as positive reinforcements for learning. Personally, my interests include music (vocal and instrumental), sports, Harry Potter, superheroes, and juggling.

I received my Bachelor of Arts from Johns Hopkins University, with my degree in Anthropology, and a minor in Women and Gender Studies. Education has always been extremely important in my life, and subsequently I have sought out ways to share my knowledge with students as a tutor. I have tutored students ranging from the first grade through high school; every age/grade brings new and exciting challenges. I have experience successfully tutoring all general school subjects (English, History, Math, Science, Spanish), including English (ESL) to Spanish-speaking students, but my favorite subject to tutor would probably have to be English. I love challenging my students to accurately and grammatically express themselves through writing stories and learning new vocabulary words. I enjoy teaching them tricks to eventually self-correct themselves, use context clues to answer reading questions, and gain a better understanding of their English material. As a tutor, my style is to have fun with my students and establish a friendly bond. I find that this makes the learning come much easier, and paints a picture of their understanding beyond the homework page. I like to know what my students are interested in, how they enjoy school, their favorite subjects, their day-to-day, their extra-curricular activities, etc. Usually I find that my students already possess all the tools within to overcome any academic difficulty they may be experiencing. They simply need a little personal attention and encouragement to bring out their confidence and comfort with a subject, as well as a platform where they feel safe to ask any questions. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy staying active through yoga, running, dance, horseback riding, and sports. I also love to read and discover new music.

Together, we work step-by-step through problems, discussing reasoning, strategy, and underlying principles until everything clicks. My goal is to build lasting confidence and clarity. Whether a student is catching up, aiming to excel, or just trying to feel more comfortable with the material, I create a supportive environment where they can ask questions freely, think critically, and stay engaged. I attended Johns Hopkins University, and am working toward a degree in Applied Mathematics and Statistics. I have been tutoring since I was in high school, where I volunteered to help students struggling in math. In the past, I also taught at a summer music camp, volunteered to lead writing workshops in a rehab center, and worked at a math tutoring business. My personal philosophy toward learning is that one’s education should be well balanced. In my free time I like to read, work on visual art, and play instruments. I am most passionate about math though, because it can be related to any subject, and because the skills that are developed through mathematical thinking can help create success in other areas. I try to use multiple approaches while teaching, and present ideas as visually and tangibly as possible. One of the dangers of learning math is that students memorize the method for solving a problem but do not realize the underlying concepts. I do my best to ensure that students recognize the broader concepts. Because math builds on itself, it is also very important to look at past topics that relate to students’ current lessons. There is not always time for teachers do this in a classroom setting. Often you’ll find that a student’s struggles come from missing previous skills that are assumed as their lessons advance. My ultimate goal is to help students build their confidence with math and to set them up for success in their future studies, whether those studies are directly or indirectly related.
