I graduated from New York University in 2008 - even though my degree was in Music Business, after taking some substitute teaching work I realized I enjoyed working with students. I began working full-time as an instructional aide with middle and high school students. I enrolled in Fitchburg State's Masters in Special Education program in 2010 with the goal of becoming a licensed special educator. Students seem to get the most when they ask me about maths and sciences, and now I have a bit of a reputation around my building for having strengths in those subjects. In my mind, working with a student (especially in math) can be something like a game: there's a goal, there's someone to collaborate with, there are strategies to use, and if you let yourself you can have fun doing it. The mindset of curiosity and enthusiasm that comes from a game is powerful when used in a math or science setting. I also make a point of emphasizing thinking actively about different strategies when doing schoolwork, studying, reading, and test-taking. I believe the best student is someone who actively thinks about what they do and whether they can improve, and the best tutor is someone who coaches them to that ability. When I'm not working, I enjoy gaming, making music, and reading.

Hi! My name is Daniel. I have been tutoring the reading comprehension, writing/verbal, and essay sections of the SAT, ACT, SSAT, and ISEE for over 4 years now. I also offer academic tutoring and essay assistance. I graduated Cum Laude from NYU in 2012 and have been tutoring ever since. I am originally from Boston, MA.I enjoy making my tutoring sessions fun and engaging so that I can best motivate my students. I work with my students on a highly personalized basis, and I pride myself on being able to identify their strengths and weaknesses so that I can tailor my teaching style to meet their specific needs. I have been very successful with my previous and current students, helping them to significantly increase their grades, test scores, and self-confidence levels. I also help students with their applications for middle school, high school, and college, many of whom have received thousands of dollars in scholarship. In my free time, I enjoy writing songs, playing guitar and piano, and going for a run in the park with my black Labrador retriever, Scout. In high school, I was the captain of my football and wrestling teams, so I really connect and empathize with students who have busy after-school schedules. I am always looking forward to working with new students and their families and helping those students to reach their potential.

I recently completed an MA in French Studies from New York University, following an MA in European Union Studies and a BA with High Distinction in History from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I can tutor a wide variety of subjects, including standardized test prep, English, and French, but my favorites to work with are History and writing. The study of History is my passion, and there are few things that I enjoy more than getting the opportunity to share this passion with others. As part of my History Honors program in undergrad, I was able to help tutor other students in these subjects, including preparing for exams. I also have experience in providing peer reviews and constructive critiques in graduate level writing in multiple fields. Coming from a family of teachers, education has always been a central value in my life, and I try to use this love of learning to help create the best experience I can for my students. I believe that every tutoring session should be built around the interests and learning styles of the student to ensure that they not only learn, but hopefully come to enjoy it too. Outside of academics, I usually fill my time with reading, playing video games, exercising, and cooking.

I tutor Spanish, Algebra, History, Essay Writing, English Literature, Composition, and Public Speaking. My favorite subject to tutor is English Literature, particularly Shakespeare. I try and use a philosophy that encourages discussion and conversation in a constructive way. On top of actual paper practice, such as problem sets or essay writing, I feel that it is very important to have a dialogue and discuss where the student is feeling strong and where they are feeling weak. The more we can talk and get to know each other, the more helpful I can be as a tutor. Outside of tutoring I love cooking, playing the guitar and ukelele, art history, baseball, and of course, being on stage.

I am a New York State Certified teacher who would love to tutor your child! I am originally from Summit, NJ but now reside in the Upper East Side. I have my Bachelors degree from the University of Michigan and I just received my Master degree in Childhood and Special Education from NYU. As an elementary teacher, I understand how important it is for students to get that individual attention that they may not always get in the classroom (despite their teacher's best intentions). In classrooms these days, it is easy for a child to slip back and not reach their fullest potential--not with me! I am fully dedicated to make sure that each of my students reaches their highest potential, no matter where they stand academically. Through my teaching experience, I have had the chance to teach a diverse group of students including those challenged by autism, learning disabilities, noncompliant behavior, as well as children who function on and above grade level. I have gained in-depth knowledge of accommodating different styles of learners and incorporating effective methods to meet the diverse needs of my students. Teaching should not be a done with a one-size-fits-all mentality, and I am here to make sure that each of my students learns in the way that works best for him/her. In my free time I enjoy exploring everything NYC has to offer, as well as cheering on my favorite New York sports teams (go Giants!) and traveling to new places.

I received a Bachelor of Arts in Italian from Vassar College and spent one of my undergraduate years studying in Italy with a program sponsored by Smith College. After graduation from college, I spent several years working for a small office in Italy where I used both English and Italian daily. After returning to the States, I received a Master's in Education from New York University with specialization teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Subsequently, I taught English in a variety of community-based organizations and at the university level as well. Most of my teaching experience has been with young adults in both domestic and international locations, but I have also worked with children learning English. I look forward to opportunities to spend some additional time with younger learners as they do not have as much interference from their first languages, and their youth allows them to absorb new words and linguistic structures more easily. In addition to many years teaching, I have also had significant roles administering ESL programs and working in higher education administration (the fiscal and HR areas as well as student support services) at Boston University where I also earned an MBA.Teaching students how to express themselves in writing and learning to overcome the challenges of English grammar and spelling is the area of ESL coaching that I most enjoy. Helping break down the hurdles that exist in mastering a new language so that it becomes more manageable and engaging for them to use has always yielded much satisfaction. I work hard with students to help them generate their own words and ideas in English so that their thought processes can begin to flow naturally in the new language - in addition to what they say or put on paper. In terms of what I enjoy outside the classroom (my hobbies and interests), there are a variety of activities that I can name at the top of the list. These include travel (especially to places near the sea), music, as well as going to movies and the theater. I also enjoy finding time to direct toward the maintenance of my own fluency in a second language!

I've been tutoring junior high and high school students since 2010. I have strong background in Biology, Chemistry and Algebra from completing Pre-Med classes during my time there. I also am skilled in Spanish grammar and conversation from completing a Spanish Language minor. Those I have tutored have averaged a 20 point increase in test scores and their overall average. I specialize in homework help and prepping students for tests. When teaching, I'm very hands on and write out notes and examples on paper as I explain concepts and work through problem questions. The notes I write are yours to keep when I am done, so you can keep them to review on your own at any time. I tend to incorporate practice problems into my lesson to reinforce what I've explained, because I truly believe practice makes perfect. Success in any subject can come with enough practice and with enough time spent talking through key concepts.I have additional experience in the classroom from working as a remedial math and literacy teacher for elementary school students. French has been my primary language of study for ten years, including theoretical research in college. The first rule of writing is that writing is hard. What I love is showing students how to enjoy the process, whether it's for an academic essay or a creative piece. I have experience tutoring writing subjects from the 1st grade to college undergraduate levels. By practicing methods such as outlining and concept mapping, I help students see writing as a puzzle that can be solved to create a coherent picture rather than a jumble of ideas thrown at a blank page.Writing, even academic, can be very personal which is why I believe positive reinforcement is the best method for tutoring this subject. So often, it's easy to forget to identify what students are doing right in their work and only focus on the critical. I make a point of showing students what is great about their work, so that they continue performing well in those areas, as well as identifying areas for improvement. For academic writing, I aide students with their understanding of reading comprehension, research skills, and essay structure as well as appropriate language use. For creative writing, I have a variety of writing exercises that help students stretch their imaginations as well as understand various elements such as tense, POV and story structure.I hold a MA in Creative Writing and Publishing and MFA in Creative Writing both from Kingston University in London, England and received my BA from New York University. Several of my short stories have been published and I've also earned university awards for my work. While at Kingston, I led seminars for the undergraduate courses Reading for Writers and Experiments in Form, which involved tutoring students in critical and creative writing and reading comprehension. I provided one-to-one support as needed as well as pastoral care for students. During this time, I also completed my Post-Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education.I also privately tutored college English students online in essay writing, research skills and critical reading, and my students achieved whole letter grade improvements in their English classes since our sessions began. While in the UK, I also I tutored for a local tutoring company, working with students aged 5-14 in both math and English while encouraging a positive learning environment for children who sought additional help or required an extra challenge. At Explore Learning, I also taught the weekly 11+ Prep Exam Class, which prepares children aged 9-10 for the UK exam that determines where they attend secondary school. Subjects I tutored for this class included verbal and non-verbal reasoning, math, and English composition and comprehension.I also ran special literacy and numeracy workshops which focused on various topics such as grammar, creative writing, percentages and telling the time. I provided written and oral feedback to parents regarding their child's progress and worked closely with managers to ensure each child received support appropriate to their needs. In September 2012, I was awarded Tutor of the Month.I love helping students achieve their goals as they become assured, individual learners and hope I'll be able to help you, too!

I graduated cum laude in May of 2012 from New York University with a BA in History and a minor in Chemistry. I am currently taking a year off in-between my undergraduate coursework and medical school in order to conduct neuroscience research at the University of Arizona's Tucson campus. My diverse background in both the sciences and humanities means that I can tutor a variety of topics ranging from Literature to Organic Chemistry, including the SAT and ACT. I believe I have a talent for communicating ideas and information in various ways to help others learn. I recognized this skill in my junior year of college when I took non-traditional Organic Chemistry. This course differed from standard Organic Chemistry classes in that it was based on small ( four person) groups of students who taught each other the science that they needed to know, with lectures given only once a week. For both semesters, I led my group, initiating discussions and figuring out answers to others' questions. I learned that my greatest strength in teaching others is my ability to see things from their perspective and to tailor what I was trying to teach to that perspective. That experience taught me that anyone can learn anything, provided that she or he takes the time to work through the material and has someone willing to re-phrase and clarify things in a way that makes sense.I'd like to help you learn whatever it is you need to know in order to become the person you want to be.

As the Co-Chair of the Deans Service Honor Corps (DSHC) it is my responsibility to provide my fellow members with opportunities for service in the greater New York area. I have personally volunteered in several tutoring organizations, the first of which was the GO Project during the spring semester of my freshman year. I tutored a classroom of underprivileged eighth graders who were struggling with their studies, in hopes of preparing them for the rigors of high school. I also tutored juniors at the High School for Dual Language and Asian Studies to help them prepare for the SAT. Since the majority of my students were recent immigrants, I worked to improve their grasp of the English language, asking them to read aloud publications such as the Wall Street Journal. My SAT scores are a 740 in math, an 800 in critical reading, and a 790 in writing, with a 2330 overall. I will be entering my senior year at NYU in the fall.

I was born and raised in southeast China, where it has four seasons and plenty of rain. My love for language and creative writing came at a very early age. By the time I graduated from high school, I had won four first prizes in four city-wide writing competitions. In 2007, I went on to study Chinese language and literature at Beijing Language and Culture University, where I won another first prize in the university-wide playwright competition. Following my graduation in 2011, I spent a gap year honing my creative writing skills in my second language, English. In 2012, I was accepted by the creative writing -- poetry program at New York University with a full-ride tuition scholarship. In the following two years, I studied English poetry writing with Sharon Olds, Charles Simic, Yusef Komunyakaa etc, and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in 2014. While I was developing a bilingual writer's career and having my work published in different magazines, I was also passionate about the nonprofit and development world. I had amazing internship and volunteering experience at United Nations Population Fund, Asia Society, the Metropolitan Museum of Arts etc., strengthening my editing, communications, marketing, PR and administrative skills. I have also founded the translation business Transwords Translations LLC (transwords.net), and have completed numerous translation projects between English and Chinese for Asia Society, Museum of Chinese in America, Pen America etc. As a dedicated language learner and advocate for cross-cultural communications, I am excited to use my bilingual language learning and writing experience to help others overcome their language learning and interpersonal communication barriers to advance their academic and professional goals. I currently live in Atlanta, working on a nonfiction book about my experience growing up in China. I appreciate the seasonal rain in southeast America.

I'm currently a senior at New York University. I originally started college as a pre-medical student, but then switched to a Psychology major, with a Biology and Chemistry double minor after I decided Medical school just wasn't for me. My plan for he future is still undecided, however I'm leaning towards pursuing a higher degree in Genetics. I loved school when I was growing up, and science and math classes were my favorite subjects because they made the most sense to me, but I understand that they can become very challenging very fast.My past tutoring experience involved mostly mathematics tutoring in subjects such as geometry and algebra, but I feel just as confident in my knowledge about the science courses to be equally helpful. As a tutor, I like to get to the core of the problem that my students are having with their respective subjects. I am a firm believer in going back to the very basics and building a strong foundation to build upon as the material becomes more difficult.I try to keep a light-hearted environment when I tutor mostly because of my personality, but also because I've realized that being in a very low stress environment is very conducive to learning.Let me help you achieve the grades you want, and hopefully you'll enjoy it as much as I do!
