Throughout my undergraduate education in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame, I have developed a mastery of various subjects, but also a desire to share this knowledge with others. Because of this, I am enrolled in the Mechanical Engineering PhD program at Rice University which will begin Fall 2020, and I am hoping to return to academia as a professor after earning my PhD. In the meantime, I am looking to share my passion for gaining knowledge, specifically in STEM, by educating the up and coming members of such a great field. I have experience tutoring both Calculus and Physics at Notre Dame, as well as experience as a Student Assistant for Differential Equations and Mechanics. I believe the key to learning is much deeper than learning to solve problems and that seeking knowledge is one of the best means for personal improvement.

I've helped a lot of my peers with AP courses and classes in high school as a peer tutor. I also have experience helping students prepare for the ACT through Varsity Tutors. I've had students go from a 25 to 32 after 2 months of working with them. It's really rewarding to see students learn and expand their own capabilities. I truly enjoy helping others achieve their goals! In my spare time I like to play badminton and piano.

I graduated in May 2015 from Rice University in Houston, Texas with a Bachelor of Arts degree. I majored in Sociology and in the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality, and minored in Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities. I studied at the Bronx High School of Science in New York City prior to attending Rice. I have tutored and mentored students ages 5-18 on various subjects and interests, including general homework help, mathematics, history, SAT prep, and Chinese. I was born in Hong Kong and lived there until I was 9. I am a native speaker of and am academically proficient in Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese. My favorite subject to tutor is Chinese, because Chinese culture is fascinating and the language reflects that depth very well. I am patient, honest, and flexible. My Meyers-Briggs personality type is ENFP, so I am passionate, encouraging, and optimistic. I love challenges and I am passionate about helping students because when students know that I believe in them, they begin to feel that they are capable of overcoming their academic and other challenges. I love all kinds of cultures and religions, and I am fascinated by learning about and from people. I believe in learning from my students as I work with them to meet their needs. Outside of academia, I enjoy trying different cuisines and exploring art and cultural events, including visiting museums, galleries, and various cultural and ethnic festivals. I also love DIY (Do It Yourself) projects, because they make me feel capable and strong to take on challenges.

I never received less than a perfect score on the SAT or PSAT verbal tests, in two sittings of each test. As a musician, clarity of communication (via clear, logical syntax and rhetoric) is paramount to my teaching which makes me particularly effective for students working to internalize the mechanics of language.I love helping young people learn and strengthen their skills.

I am a graduate Mechanical Engineering student at Rice University in Houston, TX. Subjects that I can enlighten with include all levels of Math through Calculus 3, all levels of Physics, lower Chemistry, and Computer Science. There's no getting around it: I am a Nerd. I breathe, eat, and sleep anything and everything technological and engineering, but I also wish to stress the engineering part - I'm very practical. I am a big fan of the KISS principle, and am a big fan of efficiency, not just in technologies, but in our understanding and use of them. Over time, that has made me an efficient mentor, able to explain and expand understanding of questions without creating overreaching or false simplifications.Over the years, I've held several mentoring roles - as a senior research student, a laboratory engineer in charge of actually training newcomers, and now as a senior design mentor - and while most of those I mentored are college freshmen and sophomores, the questions and curiosities I had met weren't always that much different from the ones I'd answer while visiting my old school teachers on career days. In science, there are no stupid questions, nor are there unqualified pupils. You don't have to have an interest in science to appreciate its achievements or to contribute to its progress, you simply need to be human - that is, to be curious.I know that modern science can seem a wholly complicated and vast subject matter that seems insurmountable. While that reputation is not unwarranted, I can also assure students that most concepts don't require a doctorate degree to understand - it's a matter of understanding the underlying principles and reasons. Science is only as simple and as complicated as we want it to be in any given situation. With that, I sincerely hope to help any future contributors get a good start on their ambitions, no matter who that might be.

I'm graduating from medical school at Duke University this summer and finally have quite a bit of flexible time to tutor, something I really enjoyed doing all throughout college. Before med school, I went to Rice University for undergrad and majored in Biochemistry and minored in Business and Global Health Technologies. In many of the subjects I tutor, I've learned them not just once or twice, but three times (for example - General Biology, AP Biology, college-level Biology, and the ultimate med-school/real life application of Biology). Because I have been through the same learning difficulties, I know how to explain the topics in a way that is easily understood. As for my tutoring style, I like to get to know the student's goals, difficulties, and schedule, and tutor the student accordingly. In the tutoring sessions, if you don't have any specific questions or homework to do, I'll do a brief review of the topic, and then ask you to work a few example problems. This helps keep you both active and alert, and ensures that you're understanding the material. My past clients have included middle school students to college students. I've tutored a variety of subjects including the PSAT, SAT, Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, English, and Geometry. In the far past, I have also tutored elementary school students and worked as a full time Teaching Assistant in an ESL program.I look forward to hearing from you!

Get to know me professionally: Why are you passionate about helping students? I understand that navigating different forms of coursework can be difficult, especially as you continue to progress in your academic career. I believe that careful consideration should be given to how you study for a particular subject, and I am passionate about helping other students determine the best practice for them so they can strengthen their academic independence. Describe your experience working with students. I spent the latter half of my high school years tutoring my peers in addition to continued mentoring and tutoring in undergrad as well in two specific roles. As an Advisor, I provided mentorship and guidance to first-years throughout the entirety of their inaugural semesters in college and beyond. As a Fellow, I worked in intensive, monthlong programs to tutor, mentor, and prepare incoming freshmen for a collegiate education in STEM fields, though I continued to serve outside of this role during the academic year as well. In addition, I spent about two years teaching Anatomy and Physiology at the collegiate level. Where did you get your education? What degree(s) have you attained? B.A. in Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Rice University, 2017 M.S. in Medical Sciences, University of North Texas Health Science Center, 2019 What degree(s) are you working toward? M.D., University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine, 2025 What subjects do you tutor? Mostly STEM-related What is your favorite subject(s) to tutor, and why? I don't have a particular favorite. Different subjects require different academic mindsets and I most enjoy exploring potential approaches and finding success in that process. How would you describe your teaching philosophy and your tutoring style? My personal teaching philosophy and tutoring style revolves around the idea: "You can do hard things!" I am comfortable being as hands-on as you would like and need, but my goal is to help others build academic confidence and independence in their own abilities so that they will be better served in the entirety of their academic careers, not just with the subject in which I am tutoring. I work hard with each student to help not only myself but help them assess their strengths and weaknesses for each subject. My approach is not "one size fits all." Instead, I listen carefully to each student and work with them on reviewing and completing their actual school materials and assignments to help them efficiently develop mastery over a subject. What interests you outside of academia? Both inside and outside of academia, I find myself drawn to experiences and opportunities that expand and challenge my worldview. I am always striving to become a better version of myself and deeply value the benefits of introspection and personal growth.

I am fluent in Spanish and English and enjoy teaching and tutoring students in Spanish, History, English, Algebra I and II, Calculus, Biology and Chemistry. I work with students to understand the underlying reasons of why some concepts are harder than others and teach to the style (visual, aural, verbal, physical) that best suits the student. I also work with the student (and parents) to develop plans to reach the student's overall academic goals. I believe that learning is not so much about the destination and the end result, but how the journey the student takes. I want my students to not only learn the concepts but get enough confidence in themselves to tackle hard subjects in the future without fear of failure.

As a current freshman at Rice University studying Biochemistry and Finance, I've developed the skills and knowledge needed to situate myself in our world today. From a young age, I've always wanted to learn more. My academic journey, however, had its challenges. The expectations at my competitive high school were often daunting, allowing me to learn to be persevering and self-motivated. Instead of allowing obstacles to deter me, I used them to grow and push myself further. This deepened my appreciation for education and its power to transform someone. My love for science is fueled by curiosity and my desire to understand "why" and "how." As I completed rigorous coursework in school and challenging extracurriculars outside of it, I developed a foundation in academics, problem-solving, and time management. These lessons were invaluable in my learning career; I want to share these lessons with my students. Growing up with a younger sister, I was often her guide. I taught her subjects I learned years prior and helped her navigate her hardships. I found joy as she overcame her academic hurdles and grew her confidence. I believe patience, encouragement, and personalized instruction facilitate an empowering learning environment. College admissions, in particular, were especially challenging. The uncertainty of the process was terrifying, but the accomplishment was satisfying. I want students to feel supported through their process and have a guide through this pivotal time. Every student should know that their dreams are attainable. I am committed to making a lasting impact as a tutor, inspiring students to embrace challenges and develop the resilience needed to succeed in their academic journey. Education is not just about learning but also about building character and confidence. I strive to bring this holistic approach to every tutoring session and help students shape their success stories.

I am a PhD chemist with years of teaching experience. I received my PhD in chemistry from Rice University in 2023, where I studied DNA-coated nanoparticles. I taught chemistry lab courses at Rice for 5 semesters and received the Harry B. Weiser Teaching Award for my commitment to undergraduate education. During those courses, I developed my teaching style where I use the Socratic method to help lead students to correct answers/knowledge rather than just giving them information and expecting them to memorize it. I found that helping students learn the right ways to think about chemistry and math showed better long-term success as it prepared them to repeat those strategies in the real world or on tests alone rather than getting used to a teacher feeding them answers. My final two semesters of teaching I worked as a senior teaching assistant overseeing two sections of the general chemistry lab course and managing the junior teaching assistants. At the end of those semesters, of the 44 student evaluations submitted, 95% agreed with the statement "I understand chemistry better because of my TA" with 61% responding that they "strongly agree." Chemistry has been my primary focus for many years, but I also am passionate and familiar with math due to how often it is used in chemistry as well as general/cellular biology due to how my graduate school research projects intersected with biology. In my free time, I enjoy learning how to perform practical chemistry in the kitchen cooking or baking, or relaxing with my cat, Pippin.

Although, I have completed coursework in a wide array of subjects, math is the subject in which I excel. I have tutored students in mathematics coursework from Arithmetic all the way up to Calculus 2. My students have ranged from ages 6 to 20, encompassing students from 1st grade all the way up to sophomores in college. Simply put, I work well with all ages, grades, and backgrounds. I can help you whether you’re trying to improve grades or understanding, regain some knowledge, or preparing for a standardized exam. With every student I tutor in mathematics, my goal is to not only improve their knowledge of the subject, but to also improve their confidence in knowing when they’ve found the correct answer. Math can be fun and easy to understand when the lesson is tailored for the particular student. I enjoy reading, listening to all kinds of music, cooking and all kinds of extreme activities like biking, hiking, rock climbing, and sky diving.

As a pre-med student, I realized that my favorite part of my extracurricular work was the human aspect connecting with others. I especially appreciated how each interaction was unique in its own way. I bring this approach to tutoring learning how each student brings his or her own unique background and experiences, and then shaping my lessons around those. I love getting to work with students over time, adapting my teaching style to best fit them.

I am a rising sophomore at Rice University in Houston, Texas. I am majoring in Social Policy Analysis with minors in global health technologies and biochemistry and cell biology. I am passionate about refugee advocacy, global health, and women's education. I am also on the pre-med track and hope to go to medical school after Rice. I have tutored for four years in high school and have a younger sibling that I have tutored in the ACT and standardized tests. I am pretty flexible and look forward to working with any new students.
