I have been teaching a wide variety of basic and advanced courses in economics for close to 20 years in the diverse and exciting New York City area. I am currently an adjunct professor of economics at Fordham University in Manhattan. My degrees are from Rice University (PhD) and Yale University (BA) The PhD is in economics, and that was my major as an undergraduate. Teaching the subject I love is rewarding, working with students to promote their careers (e.g., letters of recommendation, mentoring internships, counseling) is doubly rewarding. I'm a bioengineering student at Rice University. For the duration of my academic career there's always been one thing that's bugged me above all else. Watching a student fail to understand something and a teacher being unable to convey it to that student. I would often find myself offering to help, after either the student or teacher had given up on the question. I found that frequently the problem wasn't in the difficulty in the material, but in the method of instruction. Some people just have a different way of looking at things and might need a more unconventional explanation. I apply this line of reasoning throughout my life, both in my engineering work and while working with friends trying to help each other understand difficult concepts. Sometimes all it takes is a different approach.

I am currently a double major at Rice University working towards a B.A. in mathematics and philosophy and expecting to graduate in December 2015. My education is geared towards a future in risk analysis and thus is heavily dependent on high level mathematics. My favorite subject is statistics. Not only does statistics incorporate other disciplines like calculus, but it also is very useful for modeling the real world. Many of students think of math as a plug and chug approach- simply being given formulas and plugging numbers in. While I will give you the formulas and critical things to remember if you insist on it, I prefer to teach mathematics as a form of problem solving. How math works is a beautiful thought process- understanding how a formula was conceived is much more rewarding than simply memorizing it. But in the end it's all up to you- the student.
