I am a graduate of Canisius College with a degree in Chemistry and Northwestern University with a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering. I am passionate about helping mentor the next generation STEM students, with my favorite subject being chemistry. I first developed my interest in education during college where I worked for a science summer camp and also performed chemistry outreach events at local schools. I am frequently disappointed when I hear people get turned off from science because it is too difficult, complex, and abstract. For me, science is exciting and I want to help students feel that way too.

I am a patient and results-oriented tutor with a strong academic foundation and a passion for helping students build confidence in their learning. With a background in analytical problem-solving and structured thinking, I focus on breaking down complex concepts into clear, intuitive steps that match each student's learning style. Having worked with learners at different levels, I emphasize not just getting the right answer, but understanding the why behind it. My approach is supportive, adaptable, and goal-drivenI aim to help students improve performance while developing long-term study and critical-thinking skills. I enjoy tutoring because it allows me to make learning feel approachable and empowering, and I am committed to creating a positive, engaging environment where students can succeed.
Hello!I am a recent graduate of Northwestern University with degrees in Theatre Management, Marketing, and Spanish. I am passionate about tutoring because I love engaging with students in a way that makes them excited about learning. I believe that finding connections to the material allows students to develop a personal investment in their work that will always result in greater success. I encourage students to actively participate in a tutoring session, making sure that their needs drive a session rather than my pre-planned agenda. Every student learns differently, and I have found that the greatest success is a result of playing to these strengths rather than fighting against them. I am excited to be a part of Varisty Tutors, and to help students thrive in their academic lives.
I am an undergraduate pre-medical student at Northwestern University. I am currently pursuing my degree in Biological Sciences and a minor in Business Institutions. I also work as a TA (teaching assistant) and RA (resident assistant) within the university, so I have practiced many interpersonal skills necessary to be an efficient tutor. As a student in a top-ten ranked institution, I can provide insight and tips for how to best prepare for studies in college.I will be patient and open-minded while tutoring as I realize it is important to acknowledge the diverse backgrounds and knowledge students may be approaching an academic problem. Currently, the courses I will be tutoring include SAT/ACT test prep, organic chemistry, general chemistry, and biology. My favorite course to teach is organic chemistry because the course requires a blend of memorization and practical reasoning which can be applied in numerous contexts outside of school. I also enjoy tutoring SAT/ACT sessions because I can provide valuable insights into test taking strategies that worked for me.
I am very dedicated to helping students excel in school and in helping them develop study methods and styles that work best for them and that will serve them throughout school. I previously tutored with Boys Hope Girls Hope in Evanston, IL. I tutored middle and high school students in Spanish and English, and I was able to help them develop study strategies such as using flashcards or translating a sentence they had spoken aloud that day in their heads for extra language practice. I am very excited to be able to tutor again and to work with students. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a previously struggling student excel and to have helped them improve along the way.
I spend entirely too much time working on computer related projects and could use an intervention, possibly involving a lobotomy. I suspect I am ADD patient zero. Asimov's Robot stories led me to a life-long interest and PhD in artificial intelligence from Northwestern University.I have worked for Lucent Technologies, Microsoft, Citrix Labs, and Ernst & Young in numerous areas: telecommunications, distributed processing, databases, data science and machine learning to name a few.I am an expert in C, C++, C#, and Java coding. I am proficient in Python, SQL, and a number of other languages.I taught upperclass and graduate computer science topics at Illinois State University for six years, including operating systems, distributed processing, graphics, and gaming. I also taught at DigiPen Technical Institute for a year, topics including software engineering and artificial intelligence.I also do android apps for games and open science projects.I have collaborated on a robot of a wormlike creature that is on display currently at Ars Electronica in Linz Austria.See https://github.com/portegys and tom.portegys.com/programs.html for code projects.See tom.portegys.com/research.html for a list of my publications in AI and other fields. My most recent project is an AI simulation of honey bee nectar gathering, which includes a fascinating dance they do to tell other bees where the nectar is outside the hive.I enjoy the teaching part of tutoring quite a bit. Grading homework not so much! Last summer my granddaughter and I built a horse racing game with Godot, for example. My approach is to build things as the best way to learn. Computers give you that opportunity!
I have been teaching and tutoring for seventeen years. I enjoy working with students and helping them solve problems.
Hello!I have a Ph.D. in Psychology from CUNY and have both taught and tutored for years. I have worked with all sorts of students, from first graders to adults. My students have ranged from gifted to LD to ADHD to perfectly average. Academically, I have expertise in learning, memory, emotional processes, and behavioral neuroscience, so I am well-trained in understanding the processes that can block learning. I also have a good sense of humor, and tutoring has always been a pleasant experience for both the student and for me.Just as I have never shied away from learning difficulties, I also have taught some very technical courses at Queens College, such as Neuroscience of Memory and Psychometrics. My evaluations (from both faculty and students) as a college professor are universally excellent, and reflect my ability to motivate students, clearly structure lessons, and make very complex material understandable.I have taught college-level statistics many times, and have done graduate-level statistics as part of my research. SPSS is no problem.Name a field of psychology: I've probably taught it, and can tutor it. These would include developmental, neurobiological, personality, clinical, and cognitive. Most people need to learn two things about writing: how to make it natural, and how to organize it. I was taught by outstanding writing teachers: write first, organize later. This is how I work with my students.Tutoring is all about communication. I can take complex, forbidding material and break it down in different ways, until the light goes on.
I am a recent graduate from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Arts in Gender & Sexuality Studies and a minor in United States History. I'm excited to join the Varsity Tutors team and begin tutoring students ranging from elementary to high school because I believe that a tailored, inspiring approach unlocks potential that students may not even realize they possess. In the current remote-learning environment, it's harder than ever to fully grasp course material I'm here to fill in these gaps and ensure students don't miss out on critical foundations or future opportunities.I have teaching experience from tutoring while in high school and working as an Outdoor Educator a few years ago, but I believe that what really allows me to connect and engage with students is my experience from actually being a student and tutee. I find that a personalized approach based on communication and individual learning style empowers students to not only improve in one specific class, but thrive in future endeavors. In one word, my tutoring style is collaborative: I tailor my approach to engage each student and create long-lasting confidence in the material and themself. I've also worked with students with ADHD and mood disorders, so I understand the importance of designing tutoring sessions around each student's unique needs in creating a productive learning atmosphere.Outside of academia, I enjoy reading, spending time with friends, and listening to music. My favorite way to spend an afternoon is walking along the lakefront with my dog, Jude (weather permitting!). I hope to speak with you soon!
