I have a deep interest in logical deduction and the general art of mathematical problem solving; however, it is often easy for busy students and even teachers running behind schedule to allow the reasoning and deduction to fall by the wayside in favor of a memorized algorithm for solving certain problems.Fundamentally, mathematics is an art of deriving new knowledge from what we already know, so my philosophy for teaching and tutoring mathematics is primarily concerned with the "why" of problems. The quadratic formula is useful, but if you cannot derive it, then you do not truly understand it. There are simply too many problems in mathematics to memorize solutions to all of them. Therefore, my goal as a tutor is not to throw new information at you, but rather to equip you with the logical and deductive skills to solve problems on your own, even if you have never seen the problem before.Outside the classroom, I am an amateur composer and musician. I primarily play the piano, but I also recently began to learn the theremin! Working on a graduate degree in Psychology has certainly helped me get into the minds of the psychometricians who make these tests. There are a number of strategies beyond just the test material that I work on with those whom I tutor to ensure their best performance come test day. It is my goal that each of my students believes that he couldn't have performed any better when he finishes the exam. The worst feeling is regretting your performance. I have been a tutor before I was ever paid to do it. A straight A high school student, I was always asked to help my brother with his studies, which didn't come as easily to him. The central dichotomy of my life has always been that of academics and the performing arts; as I have spent the last six years since graduating from Columbia University in New York auditioning and performing, I have also found myself drawn to working with kids.
