He required more care, and for longer, than anticipated, but it was not a choice I would ever reverse. And if, for now, qualities born of that experience must recommend me more than the usual benchmarks of achievement, they may be of more value anyway. Compassion and patience, with recourse to humor, are certainly invaluable for a tutor.I have always been able to do well in academic settings and test-taking. Much of this success derives from long-hours devoted to assignments and preparation, but no small part owes to the way my mind learns. Although there are many little tricks that can be taught to help students correctly answer math problems, these tricks often come at the cost of true understanding. A lover of the arts, global citizen and humanitarian, I support the causes of economic empowerment, education, and human rights.

I am an experienced and well-qualified essay coach, and a tutor in language arts and German. I also tutor students who are preparing for the SAT. I earned my B.A. in Comparative Literature from Columbia University and an M.A. in German from UC Berkeley, where I taught college German and received training in foreign language pedagogy. I love to learn, I am drawn to travel, and the experiences I have had enrich my work as a tutor. For me, tutoring is about more than making the grade or getting the right score; I always strive to foster insights and new skills that will help my students take charge of their own education.

I attended Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City and studied Applied Mathematics and Philosophy, while also pursuing pre-medical studies. In NYC, I gained a wide variety of teaching and tutoring experiences in classrooms, with private clients, and via community service work for non-profit organizations. Currently, I work at a middle school in Chicago teaching middle school math, as well as tutor for city clients. I am most passionate about math, but am comfortable working with students of all ages K-12 (and beyond!) in subjects including chemistry, physics, Spanish, writing, and more!
