I am the first person in my family to be born in the United States. My entire family are immigrants and it was only recently that my last remaining family members came over from China. This meant that growing up I was the eldest of all the children in my family. Being an only child myself, I had a lot of responsibility to take care and help raise my cousins who are all younger. My interest and experience in tutoring comes from helping my cousins through school. My oldest cousin after me is three younger which means she was about to learn everything that I just had. When I a senior in high school, my cousins ranged from elementary school to freshman in high school. Going off to college led me to reflect on all the years I spent helping my cousins through school. Ever since middle school I would help them with math, writing, reading, and even on science projects. Moreover, I taught them about school itself how to learn, how to make friends, where to go for lunch, and so on.Watching them grow up made me understand what teaching and tutoring really means. Having the support from someone older who can also assist in academics builds confidence that students will carry throughout their academic careers. This is especially important at a young age. Even when I was at college my cousins would call from time to time about a problem they were having, school related or not. This is why my preference for being a tutor at Varsity Tutors is middle school and high school. I'd like to help students build their academic confidence while learning what they need to for school.

I am a graduate of Kent State University (B.S, Geology), the Colorado School of Mines (M.S., Geophysics), and Boston University (Ph.D, Geology). I spent the major part of my professional life working in the fields of geology and geophysics, but ended my career teaching, including three years teaching math and science at the 5th-8th grade levels, and eight years teaching Algebra I, Algebra II, Pre-calculus and AP Calculus at a College Preparatory High School. I also taught (and continue to teach) 4th-7th graders summers at DECATS, an enrichment program for academically advanced students, including classes on mental math.Since retiring I have spent time tutoring, mainly in mathematics. I enjoy both teaching and tutoring, since I found that teaching others is only possible if you truly understand something yourself. I have also found that most students fear math because they have convinced themselves they are incapable of ever understanding it: convincing them that it is possible to learn the math seems to be almost more important than actually teaching the math. I always struggled with math myself: I like to say if I could learn it, anyone can. When not otherwise engaged, I like to walk, occasionally ride my bike, and try to keep up with reading.
I received my Bachelor of Science from Boston University where I studied Biomedical Engineering. I went on to work as a field service engineer in Atlanta, GA. I recently went back to school and received my Masters of Business Administration in Marketing from the University of Connecticut. I tutor a range of subjects, but I especially like tutoring admissions tests such as the SATs and GMATs to help enable people to reach their educational goals. In my spare time I enjoy reading and playing games of any kind.
I am a test prep and college admissions expert. With over 15+ years of experience helping students identify, then get accepted to, the best college for them, consider me your one-stop college shop! My previous students have been accepted to all 8 Ivies, UCB and UCLA, Stanford, UChicago, and UK schools including Oxford and Cambridge. I have extensive experience in SAT Verbal test preparation as well as the start-to-finish admissions process. On a personal note, I grew up in Virginia, attending public schools, a public 'magnet' high school, and the University of Virginia. After completing graduate school in Boston, I met my Japanese husband, lived in Tokyo for a decade, and recently returned to the Good Old US of A. I pride myself on connecting with each individual student based on his or her individual interests and goals. I am a huge reader, love cooking and baking, enjoy travel and anything outdoors, and have studied FIVE foreign languages. I am also active in volunteer work, and I take any chance I can get to play with my two nephews!
After completing dual Bachelors' degrees in History and French Language and Literature at Boston University, I went on to obtain a Master's degree in History at Northeastern University. I currently work in the museum field and decided to get in to tutoring in order to share my love of learning with students and to keep my French language skills sharp.
I received my Bachelor of Science in Biopsychology from Tufts University and my Master of Science in Medical Sciences from Boston University. After graduating, I spent several years working in medical research labs in Massachusetts and California. I have a strong background in the life sciences, and am most passionate about biology and biochemistry, especially as they pertain to the science of human health. I am also a full-time parent of two young children, and spend my days encouraging curiosity, teaching through play, and answering endless questions. I believe that there are as many learning styles as there are learners, and that figuring out how to understand and leverage one's own needs, preferences, and quirks is the key to making learning feel natural and intuitive. In my free time, I enjoy swimming and fencing, am an avid reader and movie lover, and dabble in game design.

My approach emphasizes clarity and practice, utilizing diagrams, written notes, and online resources to facilitate understanding. I believe that fostering a supportive environment encourages students to explore complex concepts confidently. My involvement in honor societies during high school has further fueled my commitment to education, and I am dedicated to helping students achieve their academic goals while fostering a love for learning. I enjoy traveling, cooking, music, pilates, and more!
I received a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the University of Missouri and I'm currently pursuing a Master's degree in Social Work from Boston University. I tutor a broad range of subjects, but my expertise is in math and physics. My niche is working with students who have ADHD and I believe that my patient, positive, and firm approach to tutoring is what helps my students overcome their learning challenges.
I am a graduate of University of Maryland, Baltimore County. I received my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 2017. Throughout college and since graduation, I have been working on organic chemistry projects and started my PhD career in 2018. While I can tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Chemistry, Mathematics, and Spanish. In my experience helping struggling students prepare for these subjects and seeing them better understand the material is the most rewarding part of tutoring and teaching. I've been a teaching fellow for organic chemistry labs since 2018 and understand every student has different hardships and approaches to any school material. I am a firm proponent of education, believing it to be absolutely necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. I don't think anyone should shy away from learning about any material that interests them. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, crossword puzzles, watching movies, along with running and watching baseball with others.
I have taught the SAT, SSAT, AP Biology, AP Physics, and AP Chemistry for 2 years. I love teaching students HOW to learn, not just WHAT to learn. I always emphasize hard work - because you always get what you work for. I don't care about natural intelligence, because trying your best and being persistent is the key to learning and improvement. My favorite part of teaching is seeing the student understanding a concept for the first time.
Writer, philosopher, and strong believer in the power of critical thinking, my goal is to help students feel engaged and excited about materials they are working with.I did my undergraduate degree at the University of Richmond and I'm currently pursing an MA at Boston University in the School of Communication.I enjoy working with learners of all ages and backgrounds.
Everything I do is rooted in the belief that a world in which people no longer live subservient to external forces, but live according to their own intuitions, curiosities and passions, is absolutely possible. The only obstacle to such a world is the esteem and focus within each of us. Let us tap that unrealized capacity together so that you or yours can be the best, regardless of circumstances. My name is Alexander Wilson, and I remember the days when I too needed a tutor lest my goals and vision were to meet their maker. I remember that sense of frustration and fear that you or your child may be feeling right now, so let us transform frustration into fuel and fear into fire by making sure you not only have a great tutor, but the RIGHT tutor to empower you or your child toward the full realization of self in an increasingly globalized world. My experience ranges from being an instructor at The Little Gym, to preparing Houston-area students for the SAT, to helping non-native English speaking professionals pass the GMAT and meet their work obligations for projects that had to be conducted in English. My primary task at every learning level is to make the prescribed curriculum or deliverable more constructive, engaging, and fun so that students remain receptive and benefit from a more profound level of instruction and productivity.I cannot wait to support higher standards and better performance for you or those you long to see be the best that they can be.
