I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2013 where I received a Bachelors of Science in Economics with a concentration in Marketing. I currently live and work in NYC after a brief stint in Boston. I am studying to take the GMAT so I understand the frustration that students studying for the SAT may feel.As a tutor, I focus primarily on Math as that was always my strongest area of study. I scored above the 95th percentile on the Math section of the SAT. I have previous experience helping students to increase their performance on that area of the test. I enjoy helping students to understand topics where they have previously struggled. It is rewarding to see them finally grasp a topic that they were finding difficult or watching their SAT scores increase after learning some strategies. As the oldest child in my family, I have always been around children anywhere from 6-14 years younger than I am. I enjoy working with younger students and I have the patience to go at their pace.

I received my Bachelor of Arts in English and Secondary Education at Gettysburg College and am currently working towards my M.S.Ed in Reading/Writing/Literacy with Reading Specialist Certification at the University of Pennsylvania. I spent the past year working as a full-time high school English teacher in the Council Rock School District where I taught ninth grade English, Public Speaking, and Ancient Mythology. I have always wanted to be a teacher, and I have had numerous opportunities to work with students in various settings. While at Gettysburg, I was a tutor for several after school programs working with elementary to high school students. I studied abroad in England the fall of my junior year, and I worked as a student aide in a year six classroom in Lancaster, England. I also worked at Gettysburg College’s Admissions Office as a tour guide, which gave me the chance to work closely with admissions officers who gave me insight into the college application process and tips for writing a good college essay. I am able to help with any English subject as well as test prep for reading and writing. As a teacher, I am passionate about helping students achieve academic success, and I will bring that same passion and creativity to any tutoring opportunity. Every student is different, and each has his or her own academic needs. I strive to find the best -- and most enjoyable -- way to tutor each student to accommodate individual learning styles. Other than English and education, my biggest passions are music, theater, and sports. I love to sing and play the piano, I have been a participant and teaching artist at my local theater’s summer camp for over ten years, and I play softball, soccer, and field hockey.

Hi - I'm Peter. I've always had a preference for math and science, which explains my undergrad choice in engineering. I graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I received my MBA (Industrial Management) from the Wharton Graduate Division at U. of Pa. My primary work experience prior to teaching was in business planning and finance (more math). I started teaching because I enjoyed helping students at Baruch College prep for graduate school entrance exams (GMAT, LSAT, GRE). Later on, I aided community college students to break through their difficulties in basic math, algebra, quantitative literacy and statistics/probability (remedial math courses). Many of these students were the first in their families to attend college. I've been teaching math for 25+ years, both in a classroom setting and, more recently, on-line. I prefer to use a whiteboard and other visuals to present the problems and explain the methodology and steps that lead to the solution. If you are my student I would encourage you to first think through the problem and work it through on your own whenever possible, as it helps to foster self-confidence. Then I can step in and assist where I can to guide you to the correct solution. I like to put myself in my student's place in order to understand what hurdle(s) they need to overcome to solve the math question. I can explain approaches to the solution in several ways until it makes sense to you. I am available pretty much during the week or on weekends from late morning until early evenings and can make exceptions when necessary. I would be happy to hold an initial exploratory session at no charge just so we can get to know each other and agree on what we can accomplish together.

I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania in 2015 with a B.A. in Biology and minors in both English and Creative Writing. During this time, I also gained experience tutoring a student in Reading at an elementary school in West Philadelphia. After my undergraduate career, I took a position with Teach for America in sunny Phoenix, Arizona. I taught 6th and 7th grade mathematics in a Title I middle school in Phoenix for two years. I also earned my M.Ed. in Secondary Education from Arizona State University during this time, and I graduated in Spring of 2021. While most of my experience is working with middle school students, I am certified to teach math between grades 6-12. I have worked with all kinds of learners, including students with IEPs and Emergent Bilingual students. My Teach for America training fostered within me a student-centered approach to teaching. As a teacher, I strive to make content engaging and relatable for my students. My number one priority is to make students feel comfortable. No mistakes are bad mistakes. I teach with the goal of developing understanding and confidence with the material, for all my students. In working one-on-one with students, I believe that it is also important to get to know individuals' learning styles and preferences so that I can meet their unique needs. As someone who has worked with students struggling in math, and has struggled in math myself, I know that sometimes you just need to hear or see something explained in a different way in order to understand it!I love math as a subject because once a student understands how to do something in math, they feel accomplished in a special way, and they can translate that understanding to other problems/concepts. My first math tutor was my dad; when I was in elementary school, he used to check over my math homework for mistakes. If I missed something, he would flag the problem and we would go back and find where I went wrong. Eventually, I began to check my own work, which continued to be a helpful habit on tests throughout high school and college. In my free time, I enjoy doing anything outside, especially hiking and backpacking. I also enjoy reading fiction, cooking, and listening to podcasts.

Hi! Welcome to my page! My name is Sean Gawronski, I'm from Cincinnati Ohio, and am actively studying linguistics and computer science at the University of Pennsylvania. Beyond school, I am actively training for and exploring careers in artificial intelligence with a particular focus in machine translation and speech recognition systems. In my free time, I'm a huge sports buff, foodie, and a yogurt connoisseur! In the past, I founded and headed a student tutoring program that spanned across high school STEM, English and foreign-language subjects. With Varsity, I am continuing teaching those high school level concepts, as well as carrying my personal experience with standardized tests like the ACT, SAT, and Advanced Placement exams. Beyond course material, I also work with students with applying to college. The internet is a place full of information and tips regarding applications, essays, and long-term prep: some is helpful, but much of it isn't. As someone who has freshly gone through the admissions process, I am passionate about using my experience to help students pursue their dream schools and scholarships. In regards to my teaching style: I make an active effort to integrate my experiences as a tutor alongside those as a student and a mentor into my teachings. Whether searching for a tutor for yourself, your child, or your student, I know how difficult it can be to find someone you can trust is knowledgable and an effective teacher. Thats why I focus not only on helping students improve their proficiency level, but also prioritize fostering a relationship with the material that helps them feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and builds confidence in their ability to learn. In sessions with me, you can expect to focus on mastering the conceptual understanding of material before moving to progressive applications of the concept. Of course, there's so much that goes into learning beyond rigid structures and practice problems. Every student is unique and learns differently, so as we spend sessions together, I tailor study sessions to best assist your progress: keeping what's working, and mixing up what isn't. Whether your goals are improving test scores, working through classroom material, or building successful college applications, I have no doubts our sessions can help move you in the right direction. I look forward to meeting you and our first session together!

Hi!My name is Liz and I want to work with you!I enjoy teaching and mentoring. I have worked with undergraduate and high school students extensively over the last several years. I believe learning occurs not when a student first hears the information but when they start using the information. Learning takes reflection and practice enhanced through multi-faceted approaches. My role as a tutor is to provide insight and direction to the learning process. After all, not only have I learned the material once but I have also observed multiple people learn the same material. In addition, through my research experience I have implemented the classroom lessons into real life problems.I enjoy incorporating my research into my teaching/tutoring. I can draw from experiences of commonly misunderstood concepts that cannot be gained from a textbook or other interactive learning modules. Not to say there isn't value in those activities because it allows students to learn/review in their dominant learning style. My role as a tutor is to provide the most useful resources and help students build the right tools to eventually master the subject.I am currently a postdoctoral research fellow at UNC Chapel Hill in the School of Pharmacy. I am developing non viral gene therapy systems for treatment of solid tumors. Before this, I earned my PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. There in addition to research I gained an appreciation of nature. I lived near a waterfall and I have hiked several mountains in the Adirondacks! In undergrad, I studied physics at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. I fell in love with the city and physics and math during my 4 years there. My view about tutoring is that all students are capable of achieving their goals in mathematics. I think that one-on-one sessions are invaluable to students struggling in a classroom environment. Sometimes teachers do not have the time to give sufficient personalized attention, the way a qualified tutor can. I believe that I can help motivate and encourage students who are currently having difficulty. Hello parents and students! My first experience with tutoring came in 2009 when I signed on to coach (tutor + mentor) struggling freshman engineering students. The success that I helped them achieve was so rewarding that I made it a point to return to tutoring after graduation! My tutoring style is heavily influenced by my problem-solving-oriented engineering background. In school, I learned how to break down problems, analyze each component, and then proceed step-by-step to a solution. This same approach has helped me excel as a tutor because breaking down problems for students and guiding them as they grapple with the concepts involved helps identify sticking points and facilitates a comprehensive understanding of the material at hand.My previous tutoring experience has taught me how to be patient, present information to students in a way that matches their individual learning styles, and communicate clearly and effectively.I have tutored both in person and online, and I am comfortable with either setting. I'm confident that I can help you (or your student) achieve to the best of their ability, so please don't hesitate to get in touch!

I recently received my Master's Degree in Media and Communications from the London School of Economics. Prior to that, I graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania, where I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. I have tutored a wide range of students both as part of my college curriculum and also a private tutor. While at Penn, I pursued my passion for child advocacy and education by participating in ABCS courses, serving as an active member of Big Brothers Big Sisters and working at the City of Philadelphia Department of Human Services to promote funding for after school programs. As a private tutor, I have worked with ages 5-15 in subject areas including Elementary Math, Reading, Writing, AP US History and Government, Literature and general study skills. My favorite subjects to tutor are Reading, Writing and History because I find that students can often find a great deal of personal meaning in these subjects which is very rewarding. My tutoring style is one that allows students to feel comfortable and respected. I am confident that any student can master whatever subject they set their mind to, and that this can be accomplished when tutors and students work together to determine how the student best learns. By being patient, observant and kind, I get to know my students both academically and as people. Outside of working, I love to have fun by taking dance classes, running, cooking, traveling or watching a funny movie.

Hello! I am a rising sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania. I am currently earning my Bachelors in Archaeological Anthropology with a minor in Ancient History, and earned my Associates while in high school at Tompkins Cortland Community College. The subjects I am the strongest tutoring in are English, history, ACT English, ACT Reading, and SAT English. I can also help with college applications, as I was accepted to all 4 schools I applied to: UPenn, Cornell, SUNY Stony Brook, and SUNY Binghamton. I was Valedictorian and currently have a 3.97 GPA at Penn. I was the first from my high school to get in to an Ivy League school, and so I know what it is like trying to achieve high academic goals while lacking resources to do so. That's why I'm here to help!
