It can be a big scary Math world out there! All those variables and vertices...and some numbers are even imaginary. My goal has always been to demystify Math and while some may never love it - you can at least understand it. My goal has always been to not only show "How" to tackle a problem - but "Why" you are doing what you do and unlock personal understanding. 20 years experience in teaching and tutoring - from pre-algebra to pre-calculus (with the picture puzzle that is Geometry thrown in) and all those tricky trap SAT problems, I have seen it all and learned one thing - understanding what to do rather than just doing the steps helps a student learn Math for themselves. Learning for one's self is the key to personal growth...and those all important better grades.

As a devoted lifelong learner, I frequently participate in professional development, courses, and workshops. This love of learning permeates my professional life and I enjoy helping others identify and reach their learning goals. I recently graduated from the Harvard Graduate School of Education with my Ed.M. and have experience teaching people of all ages in museums over the past two years. Prior to that, I worked as a registered nurse for five years where I often did patient education in the middle of fast-paced, high pressure scenarios. I believe everyone has the capacity to succeed academically. However, each person's path to success is unique, requiring personalized strategies that complement individual learning styles. I am happy to work with students to help them discover the strategies that are most efficient and satisfying for them.

While at Penn, I tutored student-athletes for three years in numerous subjects including Computer Science, Economics, French, Psychology and Linguistics, as well as in basic study habits and time management skills. I was also a member of the Division 1 Varsity Baseball team, as well as involved in numerous extracurriculars often revolving around my academic interests. I graduated Penn as a member of Mortar Board National Honor Society, which rewards academically driven students who display leadership and involvement throughout the community. During my junior year I chose to take my spring break in New Orleans with Habitat for Humanity where we built several houses for a community still badly damaged from the devastating effects of Katrina. After graduation I spent a month touring Europe with my best friend from home and enjoyed every last minute of it!Now I am currently working in the Financial Services industry in New York as a first-year analyst, but greatly enjoy tutoring students of all ages and interests!

I love to help students to do well on the SAT and ACT Verbal, Reading, and English sections. I have tutored these areas of standardized tests for more than 3 years. My approach is not "standardized" because I enjoy working one-on-one with clients to tailor learning experiences that address each person's unique needs. As a former professor of communication, I also have the skills to help professionals and graduate students with their research and writing. I am currently helping a doctoral student with her dissertation.

Teaching students to get them excited about science and research is one of themost appealing and impactful aspects of being an academic. I have experienced education as a student, teaching assistant, and lecturer in multiple universities and countries. Inspired by my teachers and working first-hand with some of them as a teaching assistant, I have discovered the following principles that guide my approach to teaching.First, an instructor should always think from the student's perspective to devise the best way toexplain a seemingly-complicated concept, e.g., by reducing it to its subproblems, and by clearly illustrating the connections to previously taught concepts. Peeling away the apparent complexity to reveal the core concept will help the student to successfully retain, recollect, reapply, and expand upon the idea, which is in fact the true purpose of learning. Second, collecting and incorporating feedback is critical. Engaging students early on and periodically via surveys and quizzes helps gauge their progress and understanding of the material. Office hours are a useful opportunity to individually workwith students from unique and diverse backgrounds.

I have a PhD in computational physics from the University Of Pennsylvania, as well as a degree in physics and computer science from the University Of British Columbia. I have years of experience as a teaching assistant and have been an instructor at a college level. I've taught hundreds of students to program effectively in a wide range of languages, as well many different physics courses. In the corporate world, I've found the experience of watching a mentee grow and thrive the most satisfying. While small classroom experiences are fun, I love working one on one with students - the moment when an idea "clicks" is just as fun for the teacher as it is for the student!

I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in History. During my time at Penn, I tutored middle school and high school students in reading, writing, and math through the West Philadelphia Tutoring Project. Following graduation, I worked and lived abroad for two years, first in Sydney, Australia, and then in Istanbul, Turkey. During my time in Turkey, I worked as an SAT and TOEFL tutor with high school and college students. While I am comfortable tutoring a broad range of subjects, I am the most passionate about history, reading, and writing. As a former Managing Editor for a tech company, I understand how vital reading and writing are as a basis for other studies. And as a former history major, I know the importance of building analytical skills, and how a strong analytical mind can lead to progress and success in a multitude of subjects.I loved being a student and continue to teach myself new things today. Hopefully, I can impart my love of learning onto my students. While I know students may not be passionate about every topic they study ,I hope to be able to find at least one part of each subject that students can personally connect to. Most importantly, if I can impart one thing to my students, it is self-confidence. Performing poorly in one subject can have a deleterious affect on other aspects of academic life and I firmly believe that confidence is half the battle. I love seeing a student's face when they realize they understand a subject and that they can truly succeed.Outside of tutoring, I am a live music junky who loves to read, write, and do anything that gets me outdoors.

Reading in general is a way for me to transport myself to another time, place or world. I think that education is extremely important because it is a way for the average citizen to empower him or herself both intrinsically and extrinsically.I am currently a law student and am on the road to appreciating a new kind of study: that of various legal doctrines, statutory interpretation and methods of argumentation. In my spare time, I enjoy running, hiking and traveling. I am a graduate of The University of Pennsylvania. I received my Bachelor of Arts History. Since graduation, I have worked in organizations that seek to enrich and empower the lives of students regardless of their age, skill level, and, I have tutored the children of immigrants in Brooklyn and Manhattan while working with private clients all over New York City. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Science, Mathematics, and History. In my experience helping struggling students prepare for Standardized Tests, we always seem to have the most fun (with remarkable advancements) prepping for the Critical Reading and Writing portions of the exams as well as the math component. I am a firm proponent of education, believing it to be absolutely necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. I make it my mission to impart to my students with the idea that they have the potential for greatness. I let them know with my words and actions that with the right nurturing, mentoring, and guidance they can become the best versions of themselves. I know that if they receive the necessary assistance and encouragement, they can achieve their fullest potential. In my spare time, I enjoy reading that which enriches my life, walking in the park, and the odd game of American Football.

I have a Masters in Creative Writing from Cambridge University. I am a writer, and I love to teach writing as well which, I find, is often harder than it is assumed to be. Especially if the aim is to write with clarity and impact, there is much to be mindful of, even something as seemingly straightforward as the placement of commas. In fact there is no such thing as a piece of writing which cannot be improved, it's just that we have decide, in the interest of time and sanity, when it is good enough! I have also worked as an ESL instructor in a LINC program. Additionally, I am a teacher candidate in a BEd After-Degree program, and in that capacity I have taught multiple subjects to Elementary schoolchildren in a Canadian classroom, including Writing, Math and Science. In particular, I enjoy teaching Math to youngsters, because I can see the difference when they realize Math is not at all a fearsome beast, but rather something full of creativity and even joy. I believe strongly anyone can be great at Math. When I have the time I like to read, swim, practice my French, and play piano and squash.

I am an Executive Board Member of one of the largest community service groups on campus, the West Philadelphia Tutoring Project, so I have had plenty of experience tutoring elementary and middle school students in reading and math in the Philadelphia area. Prior to my experience tutoring in Philadelphia, I ran an online writing program teaching essential writing skills to elementary school students and served as an Algebra I instructor at a local community center. I enjoy tutoring math up to Algebra 2, SAT Math, and editing essays (including college essays) because helping students build math foundations that will help them for the rest of their life is rewarding and I greatly enjoy editing essays! I have a very flexible tutoring style - I am approachable and willing to answer any questions related to the material. Hopefully, I can explain things as simply as possible so they stick. I have come a long way from that film student who had aspirations of becoming the next big writer/director, to the middle school math teacher I am now (and loving it).Having taught for twenty years, I have found the one subject that seems to be especially pervasive across the others is math. Thus, I have been able to teach basic math, honors algebra, and higher level math concepts by interspersing history, music, drama, creative arts, sports, literature, and film. An appearance on Who Wants to be a Millionaire has helped fuel student interest in knowing how one subject area affects another. I think this helps dispel the notion that math is all dry numbers and theory. My style in the classroom is very similar to my tutoring style. I listen, I observe, I plan accordingly. I have been able to work with students who previously had not a clue as to a specific concept and have had them walk away feeling confident about it, no longer fearing the subject when it has been brought up.While I specialize in math, I can be of great help to anybody needing help with history, literature, language arts, sociology, theatre, and film. When not imparting knowledge, I am busy outside, walking and playing with our dog, reading, writing, attending theatre, film, and most of all, playing general manager to my beloved New York Yankees.I look forward to working with you!

I'm a software/data architect with a specialization in analytics / data science. My undergraduate majors are math and physics. My completed M.S. is in applied statistics, and the M.S. I'm currently pursuing part-time is in computer science.I choose to tutor part-time because I'm old enough that I have some accumulated skills and wisdom to pass on. This is not my first time as a tutor. I tutored both in high school and in college. I also taught statistics and business math to adult students between 2008 and 2011. After seeing some online videos on higher-level mathematical topics (calculus, linear algebra, complex analysis, etc.), my interest in teaching resurfaced. I don't know where this gig will lead, but it's nice to have alternative career pathways for when one is tired of climbing a ladder of job titles and getting away from the things that one loves, which for me have always been math, physics, and software development.

I tutor a broad range of subjects including English (Grammar, Critical Reading, and Writing) and Math. My favorite subject to tutor is Math because once students fully understand the fundamental ideas of a mathematical area, they can unlock their ability to tackle much more complex problems. I have experience tutoring children of all ages during my years babysitting throughout high school. My tutoring technique is a highly interactive approach, tailored to each student's specific needs and most effective learning style. I am passionate about education and appreciate the opportunity to impart that love of learning to others. Outside of academia, I enjoy watching independent films, running, and reading.
