I recently graduated from Adelphi University with an M.F.A. in Creative Writing (Playwriting Emphasis), and I have a B.S. in Theater from Black Hills State University. I moved around a lot as a child, and I have lived in eight different states including Florida, California, Ohio and South Dakota. I tutor a variety of English-related subjects. I love all aspects of reading and writing, but I have a special fondness for grammar and mechanics. I like to think of punctuation as musical notation, and I love the process of figuring out which words and symbols best serve what I am trying to say. Writing is an agent for self-expression, and I am passionate about helping students to master it. The way that I go about this is dependent on each student's personal strengths, which I asses and then build upon. In addition to tutoring, I also teach Creative Writing and English Composition at Adelphi University. In my spare time, I love to explore NYC. I see as much theater as I can fit into my schedule. I also love visiting the city's museums and parks.

I have recently completed my final semester at Adelphi University, and I have received my Master's Degree in Literacy from Birth-Grade 12. Prior to attending Adelphi, I completed my Bachelor's Degree at Stony Brook University; graduating with a double major in English (Education) and Philosophy, and a minor in Political Science. I have my New York State Provisional English Teacher Certification for Grades 7-12 and Literacy Birth-Grade 12.During my studies for my undergraduate degree, I had a very positive learning experience student teaching both middle school and high school students in the Bayport-Bluepoint School District. I taught English in three seventh grade inclusion classes, and three tenth grade inclusion classes. I was successfully able to practice and understand how to differentiate instruction and scaffold my lessons. By becoming familiar with the different ability levels within the classrooms, I was able to meet the individual learning needs of my students, as well as tune in to their specific learning styles. I used this information to inform how I approached cooperative learning and assessments. This experience prepared me to embark on a career as a teacher by guiding my lesson planning, and helping me incorporate the NYS Common Core Standards into the lessons I taught.I am currently an English Substitute at Eastport-South Manor Junior-Senior High School. I teach mainly English classes from grades 7-12. This teaching experience is valuable, because I work closely with teachers and get to know the students very well. I have learned how to adapt to any classroom and execute any lessons that teachers have left for me to teach. Through my experience substitute teaching, I have learned a lot about myself as a teacher, and have strengthened my classroom management skills. Along with substitute teaching in this school district, I have also completed two leave replacement positions in my building. The first was a two-month leave replacement for a high school AIS English teacher in the spring of 2014. The second leave replacement also lasted two months, and it was for a middle school Wilson reading specialist in the fall of 2014. Both of these leave replacements helped me grow as an educator by teaching me how to plan and structure lessons and adapt my teaching to meet my student's needs. I hope to have my own English classroom one day, or even work as a reading specialist. My goal as an educator is to help students become independent and active learners, while engaging students in higher-level thinking skills.

I originally began my undergraduate career as a nursing major, because I wanted a job where I could learn science as well as help people. In my sophomore year, I took the chemistry nursing course and it was the beginning of a new chapter in my life. I decided to change my major to chemistry and pursue a different path. This was a difficult decision for me since I was not one of the people who thought science was easy and never had to study, I had to work very hard to understand the concepts and work through the problems. My struggles with chemistry everyday and my ability to work hard and learn anyway are some of the reasons why I teach. Students struggle with the same material I did and had the same frustrations. I can 100% relate to their feelings. My tutoring strategy builds off of using simple analogies to understand concepts and clear explanations to understand problem solving and strategies. I strive to create a safe learning environment for asking questions and saying "I have no idea what's going on. I need help."As a third year graduate student at Stony Brook University, I have been a teaching assistant since my time in undergraduate. I have taught general chemistry (I and II), honors general chemistry, and a graduate/undergraduate listed biochemistry course. I have won two teaching awards, one just for graduate students in the chemistry department in their first year and the second a university wide teaching award from all graduate students in all departments. I have tutored high school students and mentored middle school students. My career goal is to be a chemistry teacher either at the collegiate or the high school level.I like to approach each student individually and try to understand their experiences so that I can help relate chemistry to their life. It is the central science after all!

I have always had a passion for math and it's elegance. There is always more than one way to approach a problem, and the nature of how theories and concepts interconnect together still makes me marvel. I approach math as almost a game, where you have to follow a certain set of rules, but if you do, you find your answer and "win." While math has always come easy to me, I also appreciate how it can be quite the opposite for many others, and try to approach teaching it from their perspective, and to find the best way for them to connect to the material and come to their own understanding, and hopefully an appreciation of the concepts and wonder behind it all. I studied Math in my undergraduate school, where I also double majored in Theater. This added experience makes me a dynamic and engaging speaker that directly boosts my ability to convey these ideas in more than just a flat lecture format. I also have my Masters Degree in Math Education 7-12.

My first tutoring position was not far from my house. A student in the High School had pulled a latch on the fire hose and she was suspended for the whole year. It was April and I was working for a tutoring company. The company called and asked me if I would be willing to take this student on. They warned me she would be difficult.I was nervous, but I said yes, because I wanted the experience. She was very shy and timid when we first met. Her mother was a sweet lady too. The student was having much difficulty with Social Studies, which was one subject, in which she was failing. The curriculum was World War I. I went to the library, found a number of books, especially children's books and we sat outside and went through what life was like back then in the early 1900's. I felt that it was more important if she knew what the decade looked like and other things that were happening like:Food, dress, stores, etc.We began to work on research to identify the countries and political events that were occurring at that time. This was difficult for her but we used a line and colored pencils to differentiate and perceive countries and political involvements in the war.During the end of the lesson we watched, "All Quiet on The Western Front". She was bored, but some parts she found interesting.Eventually, she came around and wanted to know about some of the other subjects she was having problems with. It was a great experience.
