When I was young, I lived in China for 10 years, and I experienced the challenges of learning a foreign language firsthand. I understand how frustrating and rewarding the process can be. As a teacher as well as a parent, my top priority is helping students of all ages believe that they are successful and competent learners. I just finished my sixth year of teaching Preschool and many of my favorite lessons are those held one on one wherein I can truly get to know the students skills and challenges and create an individual plan for learning. I graduated from Central Michigan University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. I have maintained my certification in All Subjects for Elementary School as well as my endorsements for Early Childhood Education and Language Arts Grades 6-8 in Michigan. I am currently working toward a Master of Arts in Education in Teaching English as a Second Language at Aquinas College. I consider myself a life-long learner and am excited to get started with Varsity Tutors. I am open to tutoring a wide range of subjects and levels as each brings a unique set of challenges and rewards. In my free time, I am an avid reader of both fiction and nonfiction texts and enjoy kayaking with my son and spending time outdoor with our dogs.

I am a graduate from Central Michigan University's Honors Program where I received my Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and a minor in Mathematics. Since graduating, I have earned my Masters in Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology from the University of Virginia where I'm continuing on to earn my PhD in the same field. Once I earn my degree, I aspire to be a lecture professor for undergraduates with a focus on biochemistry and immunology. These subjects are exciting, but I feel students lose interest due to the mathematics involved. My extensive experience with tutoring and being a teaching assistant has inspired me to make mathematics and biological sciences more accessible and inspiring. I started tutoring mathematics (algebra through calculus) in high school and continued tutoring during my undergraduate degree in mathematics, analytical chemistry, chemistry, genetics, and molecular biology. For any subject, I like to break down the lessons into manageable concepts with different analogies to keep things fun and memorable. I love sharing my knowledge, and I firmly believe that mathematical and scientific thought benefits from creative minds.

I graduated from Central Michigan University with a BA in Sports Management. I am a life-long learner and have an extensive education. I have shared that education and experience over the years by teaching elementary school, special education, and tutoring. I also have a background in music and languages. To go along with all of this, I have been serving in the United States Army since 2002 and have many cultural experiences as well as first-hand historical accounts of many worldwide events over the past century. Also, my job in the Army required me to learn Russian. I understand how to learn languages and if you need assistance, I do have some language resources that might benefit you. It would be my absolute pleasure to tutor you and to give you whatever I can to help you succeed!

I have had an amazing teaching journey over the past 22 years. I have a wealth of experience in K-8, dually certified in General and Special Education. One of my most memorable experiences was teaching abroad in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates as an English Medium Teacher and an Inclusion Coach. It was exciting not only to teach children the English Language, but to learn and experience the cultural opportunities. I consider myself to be a lifelong learner. My philosophy is that children are unique and can learn in different ways. It is my desire and duty to provide engaging, high quality educational experiences to ensure that students meet their maximum potential.

I have been a teacher for 33 years in the department of English in over a dozen colleges. Most recently I have taught dual enrolled students in eighth through twelfth grade. I am a advocate of education on all levels. I teach critical thinking to lengthen writings. I am a grammar person. I love public speaking and teach all levels of communication in the classroom. I have had well over 3,000 students through the years. I value diversity in the classroom and in society also. I love research and know MLA and works cited pages. Literature analysis is my fave subject.

I am a high school graduate from Chicago, Illinois and am currently a freshman at Central Michigan University, working toward my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a focus on Cognitive Special Needs! Although it is not technically a "double major", this degree will fully certify me to teach Kindergarten through 8th Grade in a general education class, and Kindergarten through 12th in Special Education. My long-term goal is to get my Masters degree in order to become a professor and properly educate future teachers. Needless to say with this goal in mind, I need to gain experience in the field first. :)Part of me has always known that working with children was something that I heavily wanted to pursue. Before deciding that Elementary Education was my path, I had very high interests in Child Psychology and Early Childhood Education. However, after getting the opportunity to work in a Kindergarten classroom my last year of High School, I had no doubt in my mind that I belonged in the classroom. I also was fortunate enough to help run the Little Mustangs Preschool, which gave me the chance to interact with little ones and really gain experience with learning how to break content down enough for them to understand. Both opportunities truly helped reassure that this path toward education is something I am destined to do. In addition, on the opposite end of the age-spectrum, I also tutored small groups within my Math courses my Junior and Senior year, and also worked in the Writing Center. Working with an older crowd definitely was a different experience, but it provided me with insight as to how to tailor to older student's needs and preferences with more complicated topics.There are a multitude of reasons why I feel so compelled to work with children; the impact of learning is something so much bigger than most realize. In addition, children actually teach us so much more about ourselves than they realize. They help us practice patience, kindness, leadership and time management. Their bright-eyed personas are something that I want to surround myself with everyday, because it makes each day a new experience. Teaching is by no means a tedious, dull job and that is exactly what I am looking for. The excitement, hardship, love, and committment that comes with this job is something that I indefinitely want to be a part of.Given that I have wide range of tutoring experience with varying ages, I would have to say that in all, my favorite subjects to teach are English and Math related. I prefer to work with a younger audience given that is where my field is, but I am more than willing to working with students of ALL ages as long as they need help in the specifed subject areas listed below. :) Regarding math, my take on it is as follows: as skills get more complex, students are required to continue to work on basic math skills that they learn in the beginning. Whether they realize this or not, they are continuously working on their Order of Operations and other simple skills that are required as math becomes more difficult. The same concept applies to English, as well. As students age and papers become more detail-oriented, they already have the basics down in regard to how to write a sentence, punctuation, and structure; the area of difficult comes with the fact that sometimes they just need a little guidance and clarification to set themselves up for success. As a tutor, my prefered style is figuring out where the root of the issue lies and going from there. Starting from the basics and continuing to help clarify points of confusion are especially relevant because it helps children continue to work through these educational building blocks while also ensuring guidance toward mastering a skill.Outside of academia, I am very interested in reading. Given my passion for English, reading is something that I have always had an interest in. It gives me a chance to mentally relax while simulatenously stimulating the brain. I also enjoy spending time with family, friends, and volunteering at local organizations. Outside of my passion for children, I am also very passionate for animals; in my free time, you will probably find me volunteering for Pit Crew (a nonprofit organization) which is dedicated to helping take care of abandoned and hurt Pit Bulls seeking shelter and care.If you have any further questions, feel free to look over my profile. I've been a tutor for more than 10 years. I received my Master of Fine Arts degree from Bowling Green State University and Master of Arts degree from Central Michigan University. I received my undergraduate degree in English and History from CMU. For many years, I've taught English, Communication, and Sociology at the college level. I am very active in my community. English is my passion. Currently, I serve as secretary on the board of directors at Raise It Up Youth Arts and Awareness. I also teach a creative writing course at the Boys and Girls Club in Flint, Michigan. In addition, I serve as volunteer Retention Trainer for the American Red Cross Club.I enjoy working with learners of all ages. I am a graduate of Central Michigan University with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. I have worked as a classroom teacher (in Middle School and High School Choir as well as Elementary General Music) and a private lesson instructor of piano and voice. I also have extensive experience a performer on both of these instruments. I served for seven years as Musical Director at Pleasant Lake United Methodist Church where I learned to cultivate an ear for pianistic improvisation as well. My guiding philosophy as an educator is to give students the tools they need to achieve their own academic goals. As a tutor, I help students identify these goals and develop strategies to work towards them. This helps to foster an independence when it comes to academic achievement. Greetings from Gainesville, Florida which is home to the famous University of Florida. I possess a current professional teaching license from the Florida Department of Education in K-12 Reading, K-12 ESOL/ESL, and K-6 Elementary Education, and my teaching specialties are English, reading comprehension, and writing including SAT and ACT preparation. I taught grades 7-12 for 12 years in Florida using Achieve 3000 for the FCAT reading assessment and Read 180 for struggling readers. I use online fiction and nonfiction articles, SAT and TOEFL exam preparation booklets, and various websites which allow me to teach reading, comprehension, writing, and speaking better to my students. I also taught elementary school, all subjects, overseas for four years in the Middle East and Germany. I currently tutor several Chinese students online in English speaking, reading, and writing and also adults in conversational English at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels.
