I hold a Masters in Education (Reading Specialist), from Howard University (Washington, DC) and my earlier academic pursuit, in Speech Pathology and Elementary Education, was completed as a dual Bachelor of Science degree from Central Michigan University (Mt. Pleasant, Michigan). My 25 plus years experience in the profession of Education has been a labor of compassion, commitment, and an extraordinary experience, that led me to receive STEM Certification from Columbia University and Adams University, from NASA Endeavors Fellow Program. Since retirement from the public school systems of Washington, DC and Baltimore County Public Schools, I have tutored and mentored students from other countries, Alternative Education Programs, and Public Schools; and during the last two years, tutored online. (Which I found very exciting!) I have taught grades K-6; and 7-8.I have managed STEM programs and have received various recognition from national organizations and the Department of Education (retired Secretary of Education Arne Duncan).I am most passionate about Reading and Literacy. My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that education is a transformative process that empowers students to discover their potential and define success in a way that is unique and personal. As a first-generation college graduate who grew up in a rural town with a population of approximately 800 people, I take immense pride in the path I have paved for myself academically. Along with the majority of my hometown, my family faced significant financial challenges and relied on government assistance during my upbringing. I found solace in education as a space where the playing field was leveled and my hard work was allowed to take precedence over external circumstances. These experiences, along with my journey of navigating higher education with ADHD, have shaped an unshakable personal philosophy rooted in the belief that the learning process is a different and valid personal journey, uniquely shaped by individual circumstances and equally correct for the person living it. I have been fortunate to teach at every level of my academic journey, which has shaped my approach to creating inclusive and engaging learning environments. As a PhD student, I was asked to be a course instructor for an introduction to cellular biology course in the biosciences PhD program at the University of Utah. I developed and taught the protein chemistry section of the curriculum in a group-based learning environment alongside Dr. Janet Lindsley, the assistant dean of curriculum for the University of Utah Medical School. Dr. Lindsley's research on best education practices for medical and PhD students greatly influenced my current teaching style, which emphasizes active learning, collaboration, and real-world applications. My technical approach to teaching utilizes peer groups to foster critical thinking and encourage students to work through complex topics and problems collaboratively. As a graduate teaching assistant at Central Michigan University, I taught the lab portion of an exercise physiology course, graded lab reports, and made myself readily available to support students outside of class. To further assist students in areas they found challenging, I created and uploaded YouTube videos to the course site, providing additional explanations and resources. Although meeting with students outside of class hours was not required, I prioritized these opportunities because I am enthusiastically and deeply devoted to getting students to grapple with the process of learning, which is an extremely personal endeavor to each student. During my undergraduate studies, I tutored challenging science courses such as chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry, and mammalian physiology. To me, being an effective teacher means maintaining structure in coursework while allowing flexibility in how students approach and arrive at their conclusions. It involves being enthusiastic and supportive, but not so invested that I take ownership of the students' works, as their learning process must remain their own. I strive to create an environment where students feel safe and encouraged to engage with challenging concepts, embracing the discomfort of not knowing. Hello! My name is Annika Cushnyr and I am currently a senior at Central Michigan University where I am a member of the Honors Program and studying French and Political Science. I will graduate in May 2019 and will then head off to law school. I believe science should be made accessible AND understandable by all! Many struggle to grasp the more complex ideas their science classes present the first time through, and often there just isn't time in the classroom to slow it down when necessary to meet the extra needs of a few while the rest move onward. This can have a snowballing effect, worsening and worsening over time, and I believe the trick to breaking out of the trap is some straight-forward, straight-language tutoring!

Hello! My name is Jaime Rakowski, or "Mrs. Rakowski" to my students. I am a graduate of Central Michigan University as well as Kennesaw State University. In the 8 years after I graduated from CMU with my Bachelors of Applied Arts in Child Development, I worked in many daycares as my husband and I moved for his job. During this time, I worked with infants-school aged children. After settling down here in Georgia, I went back to KSU to earn a second bachelors degree. This time it was a Bachelors of Science in Early Childhood Education. After graduating from KSU, I was hired to teach 3rd grade at the elementary school that I student taught for. I spent 3 years in 3rd grade and moved down to 2nd grade where I taught an additional 3.5 years. In early 2021, I also received my ESOL certification.Working with children from birth-5th grade, I have seen the huge importance of early childhood literacy. Early literacy has a major impact on a student's success in and out of the classroom. This is where my passion lies. But reading isn't the only thing that I love to teach! I also love math and social studies. Above all, I love to learn and I love to foster and build that love of learning within each of the students that I work with.

Thinking about my own experience in education, I appreciate the incredible impact that teachers have on the lives of young people. I know that teachers provide skills and knowledge used by young people throughout life. Therefore, as a teacher, my greatest aim is to be a role model. I want to cultivate open minds, the knowledge and ability to look at the world critically, and students' belief in their own capacity to make positive contributions to society. I began teaching as a teacher's assistant at the University of Michigan in 2015. I grew my skills and began a teaching position during my Master's degree until I graduated in 2018. Since then, I have taken multiple adjunct professorships, which has given me plenty of experience in classroom-based teaching. I have taken time to set up the classroom for lessons, lab activities, and study sessions. This experience has taught me about the importance of differentiation in lesson planning and how to cater to different student learning. This year I have been chosen as a STEM mentor, which has various responsibilities such as organizing times to meet with my mentees, helping them with life goals, and developing plans to getting careers. My inspiration for teaching stems from my own school experience; particularly because of my Biology teacher. Between January and June 2019, I spent time as an educational curator in a challenging school district. I worked with 1st to 4th-grade students. The contrast between this school and the other school systems I worked in for this company was significant I found that a greater variety of styles of teaching were used I expected. I recognize the importance of communication within teaching; something I learned from working for the Biology department during my Master's degree starting in August 2015. I was an assistant in zoology courses and had to liaise and plan with teachers to help with different activities. In January 2016, I was offered the same role again, but this time I was given the opportunity to independently plan and develop an activity. It had to be based on different organism's anatomy, with the aim of the project to become a study tool to use throughout the semester. My undergraduate and master's degree in Biology has given me an understanding of many different concepts. This general understanding is important for teaching. I am now confident that the high school and college-age range is where my main interest in teaching. I currently teach General Biology, Environmental Science, Human Biology, and Anatomy and Physiology. I want to give the individualize attention and instruction to students who really want to succeed and understand the academic concepts deeper.In my free time, I love to be outside doing anything like hiking, camping, kayaking, etc. Seeing any type of animal brightens my day. I also play video games (both playstation and on PC).The core of my teaching philosophy is making connections with students so that we have a trusting relationship for students to feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes.

I am a graduate of Central Michigan University with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. I have worked as a classroom teacher (in Middle School and High School Choir as well as Elementary General Music) and a private lesson instructor of piano and voice. I also have extensive experience a performer on both of these instruments. I served for seven years as Musical Director at Pleasant Lake United Methodist Church where I learned to cultivate an ear for pianistic improvisation as well. My guiding philosophy as an educator is to give students the tools they need to achieve their own academic goals. As a tutor, I help students identify these goals and develop strategies to work towards them. This helps to foster an independence when it comes to academic achievement. This independence is essential for true success. I am available to tutor in the following subjects: Music, Music Theory and AP Music Theory.

I earned a B.S. in Education with a focus on English and History and an M.A. in Educational Technology from Central Michigan University in 2010 and 2015 respectively. I have been a professional secondary educator for over six years, working in middle and high schools in Kansas, Florida, and Michigan.I can tutor middle and high school students in all areas of Language Arts, but my favorite is writing. I love helping kids become better writers. Reading and writing are both very personal experiences. As a teacher and as a tutor, I think it is important to build a more personal relationship between learner and educator, so I use lots of humor and personal experiences when working with students.When I am not working with students, I love reading. My favorite thing to read is young adult fiction, especially fantasy fiction. I also love watching Marvel movies and movies based on Y.A. fiction. I love comparing the book and the movie. Most of my time is spent with my family; I have a husband of six years, a one-and-a-half-year-old son (who keeps my life very exciting), and another boy due in June!

I possess a current professional teaching license from the Florida Department of Education in K-12 Reading, K-12 ESOL/ESL, and K-6 Elementary Education, and my teaching specialties are English, reading comprehension, and writing including SAT and ACT preparation. I taught grades 7-12 for 12 years in Florida using Achieve 3000 for the FCAT reading assessment and Read 180 for struggling readers. I use online fiction and nonfiction articles, SAT and TOEFL exam preparation booklets, and various websites which allow me to teach reading, comprehension, writing, and speaking better to my students. I also taught elementary school, all subjects, overseas for four years in the Middle East and Germany. I currently tutor several Chinese students online in English speaking, reading, and writing and also adults in conversational English at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. I am a graduate of Texas A and M University, where I earned my B.S. Degree in Interdisciplinary Skills with an emphasis in Mathematics. I have also earned a M.A.Ed degree from Central Michigan University, completing a degree in Adult Education so that I could better understand ways to assist future educators and parents with their own students. I have spent the past seven years teaching and traveling internationally while exposing my family to varied cultures across the world. The invaluable experiences have only increased the passion with which I teach moving forward in my career. I am a student centered educator that uses many different methodologies for teaching to best meet the student's needs.I received my BA in News Editorial Journalism and Spanish from Central Michigan University and completed a graduate teacher licensure program at the University of Dayton. I also hold a Master's in PK-12 Spanish Education and a PK-12 Reading Endorsement from the University of Dayton. I will be Reading Recovery Certified in May 2020 through Wright State University. I am currently pursuing an Administrator's License with the University of Dayton beginning May 2020.I have tutored one-on-one in person for a private tutoring company for 2 years in Spanish. I also tutored students in an urban public school in reading during their school day for a year.I tutor all levels of Spanish, 1-AP and college level as well as elementary reading, preferably kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades.
