I graduated Magna Cum Laude and with honors from Connecticut College in May of 2016 with degrees in American Studies and Dance. Through both of these disciplines I furthered my love of learning, and realized that I was passionate about communicating that love to others. Throughout college I volunteered my time as a tutor at a local middle school and acted as an assistant teacher in my dance department. In the year since graduating, I've only become more sure about my desire to pursue a career in education. My first love is reading and writing, so I set out to become an English tutor. I worked for MeriEducation, a Los Angeles based tutoring and test prep center, as a full-time English Tutor. I received excellent training and invaluable experience during my time there. I'm passionate about providing the best and most individualized tutoring possible to students of all ages through Varsity Tutors.

I'm a former newspaper and magazine journalist who pivoted to working as a social media consultant for small businesses and non-profits 14 years ago. Teaching others to improve and enhance their written work has been a throughline across my career! My goal is to support you with practical strategies that will help you write papers and essays that shine - and maybe even know yourself a little bit better than before. During my tenure at Connecticut College, and since completing my Bachelor's degree in English there, I have tutored students in Adult Literacy, College English, Creative Writing, and High School English. I am excited to help you learn more about the pleasure of crafting written work that supports you in your goals, whether it's getting into college, describing a moment you want to keep forever or making a great first impression.
I love helping students with their work! I have 5 years of tutoring experience, two of which are in the classroom. I attended Connecticut College and received by BA in English Literature. I tutor middle and elementary school math and reading, however math is my favorite!
I am currently available as a French tutor at all levels. I have been studying French for nearly 11 years now, and it continues to be a passion that I use and demonstrate each and every day. I work as a translator and have lived in Montral, Qubec. Qubec studies, culture, and language are my research areas as well as my favorite topic of discussion. As such, I can work with both the North American and European dialects of the French language, making me a rather well-rounded candidate to assist with your French education. I have been helping those around me with French for a great many years, and I recently completed my B.A. in Francophone Studies. Additionally, I have just finished earning my DALF-C2 diploma from the French Ministry of Education. I look forward to hearing from you! Merci beaucoup!
My love for teaching comes from the incredible and inspirational teachers that I had growing up. I have loved teaching all age groups, from children ages 3-18. While I undoubtedly have a love for the classroom, some of the most rewarding teaching moments have come from tutoring.I believe in creative learning methods balanced with conventional strategies for learning. Sessions are often student-centered, in the sense that the student shapes his or her learning based on their interests.I hold my students as well as myself to a high standard. I provide feedback for my students, and welcome feedback from students and parents as well. I am always interested in how I can better myself in the area of tutoring, so I encourage open and honest feedback.I understand that life often gets in the way of commitments. Because of this, I am flexible when it comes to rescheduling sessions and cancelations. I only ask that parents/students do their best to give me as much warning as possible before rescheduling or canceling a session. I also offer make-up sessions.I have reliable transportation and travel to students' homes for tutoring sessions.I look forward to hearing from you and hope to work with you soon!Connor
Education is the foundation of success. Everyone can be a great student provided they get the support they need. This means that every single person has the capability to be successful. I do not believe that anybody is "bad at math", some people simply learn in different ways or have not been given the chance to fully engage the subject to understand completely.I believe in teaching holistically, teaching understanding; I believe it is most important to understand the material on your own. Someone can tell you how to answer a problem, but the student will only progress when they can reach the solution on their own. I enjoy patiently helping a student discover their own path to the answer. With someone to help out if the student deviates from the right direction, I believe each and every student can achieve their learning goals.Since graduating from Connecticut College in 2010, I have worked as a teacher to students of all ages: from 3 on up. I have taught in the US, in China, in classrooms, at summer camps, in the outdoors, all over. I have a liberal arts background. I graduated with a focus on Chinese language, but studied history, philosophy, math, science, art, music, and literature among other subjects.I look forward to helping you find the success you know you can achieve.
As a recent graduate of Connecticut College and Fulbright Scholar, I have always been passionate about education and learning. I graduated from Connecticut College in 2012 with a double major in English and German. My accomplishments in the German major were recognized when I was honored with the German Consulate Book Prize for Excellence in German. While in college, I worked as a writing tutor both at Connecticut College and at the US Coast Guard Academy. As a writing tutor, I assisted students with all stages from the writing process, from brainstorming and drafting, to research strategies and proper citation techniques. By working for two very different universities, I have experience working with a variety of students in multiple subjects, ranging from English and History papers at Connecticut College to Nautical and Marine Science papers at the Coast Guard Academy. As a writing tutor, I strive to create a comfortable and stress-free environment in which a student can explore and develop their topic. After graduating from Connecticut College, I pursued a Fulbright Scholarship, and I spent the 2012-2013 academic year in Germany teaching English to middle and high school students in Dresden. Through this experience, I have developed a strategy for tutoring languages that involves creating a fun and exciting environment where students feel free to speak openly and develop their language skills. I spent this past summer in Berlin helping to promote the thriving English language comedy scene in Germany's capital. In my free time, I enjoy reading, attending comedy shows, playing basketball and hiking.
I believe all students have the ability to succeed and I enjoy offering support and guidance to remove barriers to academic success. I believe when students can be excited, hopeful and creative, they can thrive. I look forward to working with you!I have an undergraduate degree in Anthropology from Connecticut College and a Masters in Social Work from the University of California at Berkeley.I've enjoyed working with students in a variety of capacities. During undergrad I worked with kindergarten students for two years in a local elementary school.During my AmeriCorps program I tutored and mentored middle school students in reading and writing and at an environmental camp.I worked with high school students at the Institute for Community Research.I taught English at the Boston School of Modern Languages to children through adults.Additionally I worked for 3 years as a Community School Coordinator in two elementary schools. One of my tasks was coordinating and organizing two tutoring programs.I enjoy writing and supporting students in their own writing, whether it is a creative writing assignment for school or a college application essay. I have published short articles, poetry and a book chapter. I also have proofreading and editing experience.Additionally I am excited to support students in reading comprehension. Reading was something I became excited about early on in life and I love to support students in increasing their comprehension and enjoyment.
One of my favorite parts about tutoring students is the ability to get to know each one of my clients on an individual basis. With that information, I can then structure and tailor each session in order to build upon the student's strengths as well as help develop areas of difficulty. Learning should (and can) be fun! As a classroom teacher, I strove to challenge, support, nurture and foster a love for learning in my students. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you!
I received my Bachelor of Science from Connecticut College with a major in Human Development. After graduating, I worked as a teacher in the Boston Public School system for two years, before earning a Master of Social Work from Boston College. I am currently a first year law student at Northeastern University School of Law.While teaching I worked with special education students who experienced a number of different learning challenges. Although I taught 7th grade math, I most enjoy tutoring in reading and writing. I love helping students learn to express themselves more thoroughly through language. Outside of academia I enjoy reading and spending time outside, being active. In high school I was a competitive swimmer, which lead to my playing on the varsity water polo team while I was in college.
"It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge."Albert EinsteinEducation is fundamental to success in life, and a good teacher is the best source of education. However, being a good teacher is the hardest of all the jobs in the world. In order to be effective and successful in educating students, a good teacher should possess certain defining characteristics that are necessary to properly educate and lead the students in positive ways. In addition to the academic (quantitative) qualifications, the effective teacher should possess certain personal (qualitative) traits such as he or she should be compassionate, nurturing and caring to the students, should come to the class prepared with positive attitudes, hold high expectations for all the students, being resourceful and inventive, should display a personal touch by connecting with students personally, also needs to cultivate a sense of belonging by making students feel welcome and comfortable, needs to respect students, admit mistakes and should be forgiving to the students. Hence, a successful teacher is a one who can effectively educate both the mind and heart of the students. In the contemporary world, with the rise of artificial intelligence and information at our fingertips, we don't need to go to school and teachers to learn facts and figures; a quick google search will give us all the answers to our questions. However, a robot cannot inspire and kindle the imagination of the students and nor do they can nurture students by educating what is right from wrong. Just like two sides of the same coin, a holistic education is a key to successful education. While a good-hearted fool is no use to the society at one side, an intelligent person with no concern for the society is dangerous to the society. Therefore, a good teacher should be able to teach students both the importance of wisdom and compassion to be successful and happy in life.I am compassionate and Connecticut College graduate with Bachelor of Arts degree in Behavioral Neuroscience, and I am currently pursuing Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience.
Learning and intellectual growth in students has its fundamentals, as does soccer. Students build from basic comfort to a feeling of being invited, then to a knowledge that they are inspired, as well as an increasing confidence in their own voice as it is elicited in various ways. Subtly they sense the growing realization that they are part of a larger whole???of the human story, of life.I believe in a balance of progressive and traditional teaching. Tutoring one-on-one is the best of teaching. I like to present any given material in two ways, such as aurally and visually, so that various learners can access the depth of the content. An example might be to have them select quotations from Civil Disobedience, put them in their own words, write whether they agree with them or not and create a visual of a selected passage from Walden. Or in addition to an aural discussion of a Scene in Hamlet I will write a web on the board to map both concepts and characters.I believe in growth through learning. I believe it is life in a full sense.
