Many of my teachers taught me the importance of relationship building. They put relationships with their students above all else. From them, I learned that students need to know you care before they show you they care. Before becoming a teacher, I was an investigator for the Department of Children's Services. Once again, I learned that for the kids I was working with to trust me, they first had to know that I truly cared and would always keep my word. I graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville with a Bachelor's in Art in English Literature then several years down the road obtained a Master's in Art in English Literature from Grand Canyon University. This summer I will begin my journey toward a PhD in Literature at Liberty University. I love all things about English and Literature, but if I had to narrow it down, Creative Writing and British Lit would be neck and neck for that top spot. I love helping students find their own voice when they write, wether it be a serious piece with a touch of humor, or that emotional narrative that just pulls at the heartstrings. Hello! I am excited to have the opportunity to share a little bit more about myself. I grew up in a very small town with a very loving family. When I am not teaching I love to travel, try new restaurants and foods, or watch sports. Also, family is a very important part of my life and who I am today. One thing that has truly made me the person I am today is teaching and education.I first fell in love with teaching at the age of sixteen when I enrolled in a program called Teachers for Tomorrow. Like many sixteen-year-olds, I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life after high school. I enrolled in the program because when I was in primary school I struggled greatly academically. I remembered a group of teenagers coming in and helping the teacher with some of the students that needed extra support with their work. I registered for the class and have never left the classroom since. I entered my first classroom for the program and was able to work with a second-grade class. Each day I looked forward to being able to leave the high school and work with the students. After graduation, I attended Liberty University where I received my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary and Special Education with additional endorsements in middle school education and history. Afterwards, I went back to my hometown and began teaching fifth-grade special education. During this time I started working on my Master's in Special Education from Liberty University. I continued teaching in my hometown in fourth and fifth-grade special education and general education. While continuing to teach in my hometown I saw a true need for additional support in reading and language arts. In the spring of my seventh year of teaching, I decided to enroll at Grand Canyon University in the Master's program for curriculum and instruction for reading. I have aspired to be a teacher since I was a child. My sisters and I would play school all the time. I grew to enjoy helping my peers learn how to understand concepts, and even tutor students younger than myself while I was in high school. My mother fostered my passion for teaching as she inspired me to search for the answers to my questions rather than settling for what was in the textbook. I have never liked to watch a student struggle to understand a concept, so I would find other ways to explain what they could not understand. My first classroom teaching experience began in 1991, in a physical science classroom. I faced ten special needs students who had to pass the end-of-course exam to earn their diplomas. In all of my 31.5 years of education, this was the most stressful, yet most rewarding opportunity. The challenge was great, but we worked as a team to accomplish the learning tasks. Nine of the ten earned their credit. There have been other challenges along the journey; I chose to approach every challenge differently. Every student is different. That requires a different approach to teaching and learning. My Biology degree with Teacher Certification was obtained in 1991 from Pembroke State University, which is now UNC-Pembroke, in Pembroke, North Carolina. In 2008, I obtained my Masters in Secondary Education from Grand Canyon University, primarily because I aspired to search for higher employment in education. However, that desire subsided as I dealt with the passing of my mother. In 2010, I regained my love for lifelong learning and entered the Doctoral program of Instructional Leadership at Grand Canyon University. Online learning was enjoyable for me. Between 2010 and 2017, I went through several surgeries that eventually led me to pause that degree. Three chapters of my dissertation were written; maybe I will resume that at some point. I thoroughly enjoy teaching Biology, Physical science, and Earth science. The higher-level sciences are engaging and intriguing; however, I enjoy working with struggling students so I choose to focus on these courses. I have had the honor of teaching honors-level classes, which proved very rewarding as well. The math in these sciences corresponds to basic algebra, so I could tutor algebra as well. I enjoy math and science because students learn to use critical thinking and reasoning skills that will help them with real-life problem-solving. My philosophy has always been simple--Every student can learn, but every student can not learn the same way as another student. Knowing how a student learns is critical to achieving mastery. Presenting the information in various ways, whether physically in the classroom or online, is essential to mastery. Using the internet resources available is a must when striving toward mastery with all students.

I have 14 years of teaching experience that ranges from 2nd to 8th grade. I have had the opportunity to teach 1st grade (ESOL Self-contained students), 3rd grade, and 5th/6th-grade position as both a math and science teacher. In addition, I have taught middle school reading and language arts (Grades 6-8) as well as 6th-grade math.I have also had the opportunity to attend Common Core training workshops that helped me implement the Common Core Standards with the Florida Standards Assessment. Examples are the Venn diagram, cause/effect chart, concept mapping, K-W-L chart, and RAFT, realia, and visuals. Some student learn best by having instructors model a lesson, and some by reading out instructions, and others can grasp details when they are read to. No matter the style of learning, repetition and patience are applied in the method used to reach my students.It is not all hard work with me, I do enjoy learning games, and competitions and engage these with learners. I believe in age appropriate and vigorous instruction. The vigorous part will be supports (and is vital to develop academic confidence) and student will be able to maintain grade-level or above grade-level status with the right support. The student-centered approach I use ensures that learners are able to rate their understanding every 30 minutes. This tells me if I am moving at a steady rate or I need to re-teach a concept. The self assessments I use are enjoyed by my students because they are able to monitor their progress and see exactly where their strengths are.
