Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Professional Chef with 10 years experience in the food service industry, including experience as a Sous Chef and Chef Garde Manger. Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts as of 2011, Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics as of July 2018, and Master of Science in Clinical Dietetics as of 2019.As a classically trained chef of ten years, the world of food has been crucial in the development of my personal and professional character. I entered the workforce in 2006 at the age of fifteen as a prep-cook for Glen Oaks Country Club in Farmington Hills Michigan. After two years of employment, I was promoted to Chef Garde Manger. In this position, I managed prep-cooks in the production of elaborate hors d'oeuvre displays for parties ranging from 50 to 300 guests. After graduating high school in 2008, I enrolled in the culinary arts program at Schoolcraft College in Livonia Michigan, where I was trained in classical French cuisine by four of the seven Master Chefs in Michigan at the time. After graduation, I received one of the coveted sous chef positions at Schoolcraft College, under Master Chef Kevin Gawronski. My duties included ordering and managing kitchen par stock, managing sixteen students in the production of buffet style service, and performing daily demonstrations of fundamental French cooking techniques.Apart from my classroom duties, I had the responsibility of managing a new project, testing the viability of two unique vending machines. These machines held refrigerated vacuum sealed meals prepared by chefs on campus. The machines had on-board microwaves that would cook the prepared meals to order, providing students with hot meals at any hour. As the chef managing these machines, my responsibilities included the development, testing, preparation, and pricing of different menu options. In addition, I acted as liaison between Schoolcraft College and the vending machine developer, where I regularly discussed the practicality and financial feasibility of the machines. While employed at Schoolcraft College, another one of the Master Chefs offered me the opportunity to work under a French Master Chef, who was the personal chef of a family that spent their summers on their privately-owned cattle ranch and resort in Montana. Since working under a Master Chef directly from France is a once in a lifetime opportunity, I jumped on the offer. Some of the proudest and most difficult work of my culinary career was done while working under Chef Robert. Chef Robert had the highest possible standards for his food and was uncompromising in the quality of every meal he prepared. With a staff no larger than Chef Robert and myself, we prepared completely different breakfasts, lunches, and dinners for fifty guests every day. After returning to Michigan from Montana I enrolled in Madonna University's Bachelor of Science program in Nutrition and Dietetics and began my dietetic career. After graduating I enrolled in Grand Valley State University's coordinated Master of Science program in Clinical Dietetics where I received my Master's Degree and conducted my dietetic internship rotations (primarily in Michigan's Upper Peninsula) and Master's research analyzing food insecurity among 5th grade student populations across Michigan. This research utilized data from the 2015 - 16 NHANES and Michigan State University's SPartners for Health program.

Hello! As a tutor, I have a very wide array of experience as well as very specialized skills to offer. Of particular relevence, I do have extensive teaching experience in a number of settings. I spent nine years teaching and running group therapy sessions for troubled adolescents in a challenging psychiatric setting. I then completed the CCSD Alternative Routes to Licensure program, consisting of intensive training and practice in teaching to diverse learning styles and a multicultural clientele. At the conclusion of this program I was accepted into the UNLV molecular biology PhD program in which I taught 18 lab sections and several lectures and seminars in subjects including biology, microbial ecology, various molecular biology topics and human anatomy and physiology as well as subjects at the highest academic levels. I've also been teaching lecture and lab sections in biology and chemistry at NSC. I have found the best and most lasting results in terms of conveying understanding are achieved by addressing diverse learning styles and socratically engaging students in logical thinking and dialogue. The more ways you are presented the information, the more likely you'll understand and remember it. In addition to teaching experience I have direct, multifaceted and extensive chemistry, molecular and microbiology experience to draw on as well as field biology experience. My research involves molecular and genomic techniques applied to notoriously fastidious microbes. More specifically, investigating the molecular evolution, genomics and molecular mechanisms of the magetotactic phenotype of magnetotactic anaerobes and microaerophiles. This also has involved the mentoring and training of 14 undergraduate lab assistants and summer interns. Thanks for reading, and I'll talk to you soon!!

I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Spanish from Grand Valley State University! I am currently getting a Master's of Social Work at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I offer tutoring in any level of Spanish and for various Psychology topics! When I was studying abroad in Spain for a semester I tutored some kids in English by helping them learn grammar and work on improving their conversational English. I also tutored basic Spanish speaking skills for a 12 week program to help people feel comfortable communicating with others in Spanish. Learning Spanish not only helps you to be more competitive for jobs, but also helps connect you with more people! I love teaching languages because it's one more way people can learn how to communicate with others in a variety of settings and locations. I love seeing the moment when people go from learning no Spanish to being able to understand even a simple sentence. That acknowledgement and realization that they have learned something new is very inspiring for me!I want to help you learn the best way that works for you. Some people are more visual learners, others more auditory, and others are more hands on. We will work together to see what works best for you!Outside of tutoring, I enjoy running and reading books to wind down after a long day!

I received my education from Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids Michigan. While at GVSU, I obtained my bachelors degree in Business/Marketing. About 8 years ago, I received my alternative certification for grades 4-8 and have been teaching ever since. Currently, I am working towards a Masters degree in Educational Leadership so I can pursue my dream of becoming an administrator. For the past 7 years, I have been teaching 6th and 7th grade Science. I love teaching Science because it's so hands on. During this time I have helped numerous students with all different kinds of learning styles and abilities. I have been involved in numerous after school and before school tutoring sessions with students to help them get caught up on material or to expand their learning of the material.About my teaching/tutoring style:The way I tutor/teach is a little out of the box. I love making the kids feel comfortable with me. First, I strive to build a relationship with the student because that is very important. Building their confidence and making them believe in themselves is key to learning as well. I believe tutoring is not only for the kids who struggle or need more help, but for students who want a little extra. Brain-based teaching says that the more the students see the information, the better chance it will transfer into their long term memory bank. What I can tutor:I can tutor Math, Science, and Social Studies for students up to 8th grade. My favorite subject to tutor would be Science. That is where my love for teaching and expertise is. However, I love Math and Social Studies, too!

I completed my undergraduate degree at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, MI. There, I studied secondary education in the subjects of English and physics. The contrast between the arts and the sciences gave me great appreciation for different learning styles and different ways to grasp material. I myself had to learn to learn differently; I had to adjust to the different topics, and I spent a great deal of time studying how students learn in both the humanities and the sciences. During my time at GVSU, I worked at both the Frederick Meijer Center for Writing and Michigan Authors and the CLAS Tutoring Center. In both places I worked with mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in the subjects as well as co-teaching with professors in the humanities and the sciences. Since then, I have completed my student teaching in both Warren, MI and Darwin, Australia in high school English and middle school English/geography classrooms respectively. I then continued to complete long-term sub assignments at the high school I student taught at. These two experiences, along with many others that I have had, have allowed me to pursue my two greatest passions: teaching and traveling. And it is my hope that I get to continue to travel, meet new people, and mentor, nourish, and collaborate with new relationships along the way.My philosophy on tutoring is directly in line with this idea. A tutor is not meant to replace the teacher in the classroom. Rather, a tutor should play the role of a mentor, guiding students to find their own successes. In order to do this, a tutor takes on the role of a mentor to nourish relationships on an individual level, help students find out their own learning styles, and guide them on the path to using that knowledge to learn content. It is my belief that the first step of any mentor relationship is to get to know each other on a more personal level--to build a connection that creates a baseline of trust--before any core content can be taught. Each student has the potential to be successful, and it is up to educators at all levels to collaborate and guide them on the process of self discovery.

Hello to all you brilliant minds of the future! Education is my passion, and I would love to aid you in yours. I have a year of experience instructing students at the collegiate level. My class sizes have been small at 10-13 students, so my personal teaching style caters towards meeting a student's individual needs. I have ample experience tutoring and teaching one-on-one between peers and teaching ESL online.I am a recent college graduate, so I remember very well the process of learning new material. My 4 year degree was earned at Grand Valley State University where I majored in Biomedical Science. This degree drew upon many disciplines where I have consequently gained a holistic and integrative understanding of the sciences. When it comes to turoring, I strongly believe in not just teaching the "whats", but also the "whys". I have found that using real world comparisons and a mixture of visual examples makes the material relatable and retainable. My goal as a tutor is not just to help you get over a few rough patches, but to build upon your critical thinking and analysis skills. I believe that the process of learning is more than just mastering material: it's mastering a way to conquer new challenges and obstacles in your path.

I have received a BS in Cell and Molecular Biology with a minor in History from Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, MI. I am currently pursuing a MS in Infectious Disease and Microbiology with an emphasis in counter bioterrorism from the University of Pittsburgh. I first began tutoring a girl with cerebral palsy who was unable to write and worked with her for over ten years and watched her progress to writing letters to full sentences. I also helped her with simple math and reading abilities. In high school I was a part of the National Honor Society and for community service I volunteered at the local elementary school where I helped K-5 with spelling, phonics, reading, math, and science. Students of varying age groups would sit at one table and I would help each one individually, staying on my toes going from one subject to the next. In high school I was also the associate editor of our school news magazine for two years and I took several Advanced Placement classes- US History, European History, English Language and Composition, Biology, BC Calculus, and US Government and Politics. In high school I was also a TA for an AP government and politics class where I helped students with their work in class. At Grand Valley I tutored a young boy in reading for two years, grades 3-5. He was uninterested in the things they read at school, but loved history and bugs; so to improve his reading skills he would read encyclopedia entries about bugs or short history stories to me. I made sure he was enunciating correctly, sounding out words properly, and not skipping over words. I was also a TA for a microbiology lab class, there I taught students how to focus microscopes and assisted with experimental procedures.I have confidence in tutoring a wide range of subjects and ages because I love to learn and love helping others learn. Seeing someone struggle for so long and have them finally ‘get it’ is amazing to watch as their confidence grows and they blossom as a person. My favorite subjects to teach are History, Geography, Cell and Molecular Biology, and Microbiology. I find science in general a fascinating subject because I enjoy understanding how our world functions and how everything interacts. History I enjoy attempting to understand how certain events happened and how those events shaped the future. In general I enjoy understanding how something works at the basic level because I think it gives me a better understanding of things further down the line; whether that be understanding how a cell functions in an organism or how we pronounce certain letters to form a word.I think that the key to successful learning is making whatever subject you are studying relevant to you, or if you are tutoring making that subject interesting and applicable to the student. For example, you can use baseball metaphors in geometry if the student is interested in sports or the functions of a cell to working parts of an engine if the student enjoys cars. I understand that some students are auditory learners and work better with pneumonic devices, while others are visual learners and work best with concept maps or flashcards. It is critical to tailor my style to each student’s needs and interests in order to help them succeed. The way I explained multiplying decimals may not work the next week when I try to explain multiplying fractions, for example, I have to be malleable to the student’s needs.Outside of school and studying I enjoy hiking, nature photography, baking, cooking, and dancing. I also enjoy reading a wide variety of books including biographies, fiction, nonfiction, historical fiction, mystery, war, and romance. My favorite book is Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith because he wrote in such a way that was refreshing and the story line kept you guessing and actively engaged.

I am a graduate of Grand Valley State University with a major in biology, a minor in mathematics, and a provisional teaching certificate for secondary education (grades 7-8 all subjects; grades 9-12 biology and math). I also have advanced degrees in biochemistry, physiology, cell and molecular biology. While a graduate student at the University of Illinois, I taught introductory and advanced courses in biology as a teaching assistant. I am passionate about biology, or shall I say, the study of life. As a scientist in the biotech industry, I used my math and chemistry skills daily. My teaching/tutoring style is to impart enough information and understanding of a topic to direct a learner toward self-education and problem solving. My style is not to provide the answer, but to guide one in knowing how to arrive at the answer. This approach has served me well in my professional career, as well as in my personal life. I find myself always challenged with learning new things, and self-learning is the key. For example, to advance my professional career, I took an online course in statistics. In my personal life, in order to become a better coach to my sons baseball team, I went to the web and studied videos on fielding, batting, throwing and pitching, and used this knowledge to run practices and develop players. My professional career has been in biotech, where I have been a mentor and trainer to colleagues, and an educator and resource to customers toward understanding the application of advanced technologies. Also, as part of my professional career, I had the opportunity to live in France and to further develop my French language skills. After moving to the US from Montreal, I took French language classes to continue to develop my grammar. As an adult, I lived in France for two years and received a Diplome de Langue Francaise avec mention assez bien (high honors) through Alliance Francaise. I enjoy sharing this language and culture with others.I am looking for new students who are eager to learn, and who want to develop their own learning skills. You may be struggling with a subject, but with time, patience, practice and a tutoring approach geared toward your learning style, you will succeed, grow confident, master a subject, and become a self-learner.

I believe that writing is vital to empowerment and expression. Everyone has a voice and learning how to utilize that voice to communicate your ideas is just as useful outside the classroom as it is inside. I've seen the positive effects of writing, and they inspire me to continue teaching. My approach to helping students utilize their voice begins with an understanding of the context in which they're learning: what is the class's content? What are the assignment's expectations? Where are the strengths? Where are the weaknesses? How can we leverage the strengths to compensate for the weaknesses? And, maybe most importantly, what's the student's learning style? As for me, I received a Bachelor of Science in Writing from Grand Valley State University in 2018. I enjoy reading, writing, and playing video games in my free time.

Master's-Level Biomedical Expert with 500+ Hours Experience How I Teach & My Approach: After 5 years and 500+ hours of tutoring, I've learned that every student is unique. That's why I don't believe in one-size-fits-all teaching. When we first meet, I'll spend time getting to know you how you learn best, what trips you up, and what your goals are. From there, I build our sessions around YOU. My background (Bachelor's in Biomedical Sciences, Master's in Clinical Research) means I've been in your shoes. I remember struggling with organic chemistry mechanisms and statistical analyses. Now I use those experiences to break down tough concepts in ways that actually make sense. Real talk: I've helped students boost their grades by an average of 35% because I focus on understanding, not memorization. Whether you need to ace an exam, understand a tough chapter, or just want someone who'll make science less scary, I'm here for it!

I am a graduate of Grand Valley University with a Bachelors of Psychology. Since graduation, I have found a passion in working with and teaching children. I found this through my experience working at a daycare/learning center. In this position, I worked with a range of children between the age of 3 weeks to 12 years old, caring for them and providing an environment that allowed them to learn and grow. From there, I wanted to expand my experience in the classroom and took a role as a building substitute teacher at an elementary school. Through this, I worked in all elementary grades, teaching a variety of subjects and learned a lot about myself and how important adaptability is. I am excited to see what the future of my educational career holds for me as I plan to go back to school for my Masters in Special Education.

Hi, my name is Darby and I'm from the Chicago-land area! I graduated from Grand Valley State University with honors in 2017, majoring in medical laboratory science. There I received many scholarships due to my academic success and developed an appreciation for some classes I had previously disliked in high school. I changed my major two weeks into the start of freshman year, trying to avoid taking many chemistry and physics classes; But after my first week in those courses, I had a newly piqued interest. I believe it was my professors that sold me on how chemistry and physics could be fun. They were always encouraging students to ask questions, and instead of rushing through the material to meet deadlines, they made sure students understood instead of simply regurgitating. Their passion for teaching topics most shy away from, and selling me on enjoying the material myself, instilled the want to share this knowledge and teaching style with others. In 2019, I began tutoring a local middle school student in my area and started to receive more inquiries, leading me to Varsity Tutors. I prefer to tutor one on one; Doing so allows me to focus on one student, making sure they understand the material being taught. Not everyone learns the same way, which is why some students search for tutors or classmates to explain things differently than presented by their teacher. I can offer a different lens on the subjects I would like to offer help. I believe not every tutor is a great fit for every student. Most students will need to try a few tutors before they find a match they are comfortable with. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, or if you would like to schedule a lesson!
