I enjoy teaching and tutoring because I enjoy working with kids, and I love to have a part in seeing them do things they weren't able to do before. As a lifelong teacher that has been my reward. I have been teaching for a many years and am certified to teach in elementary, middle and high schools. I prefer working one-on-one or with small groups. When I start getting to know my students I want to know them as the unique persons they are. Then I want to know what learning needs they have so together we can set goals and work on them. When I can I like to use games and give challenges. We have as much fun as we can while making the efforts needed for learning. Kids, parents and I will partner together so we can each do our part so kids can be successful. I have a BA in biology from Augustana College, a MS in Education from Illinois State University and further coursework at Northern Illinois University. Besides teaching in Illinois and California my experience includes years in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. During the last three years I was teaching English online to Chinese students. Subjects I can teach are elementary level subjects, especially math (up to pre-algebra), science, English and reading. I also can teach high school biology. When I'm not teaching I enjoy doing things outdoors, especially camping and fishing. I also like to make music by singing and playing my harmonica.

After graduating from Illinois State University in 2007 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education, I found my "home" at a large, urban junior high where I still teach today. In addition to being a 7th and 8th grade math teacher, I am also a Lead Teacher at my school, a member of my district's Leadership Team, and an independent contractor with a prestigious university, where I facilitate and lead professional development seminars for other math teachers. I also have many years of experience in tutoring students in science, social studies, and organization/study skills.During my time at my school I have discovered my passion for making mathematics accessible and appropriately challenging for all students. Every student is different, and I pride myself in my ability to tailor my lessons and methods of instruction to meet each student's individual strengths and needs. It is my personal goal to make kids see that math is interesting, not scary, and that it is OK to struggle with it sometimes. The way that we learned math when we were in school years ago is drastically different from how I run my classroom and tutoring sessions. I encourage conversations about math, use of manipulatives and games, and I even encourage productive struggle! I use strategic questioning and visuals to guide my students through their struggle to help them realize with some hard work and focus, they can and will understand the material.Learning is fun and finally grasping that concept that has boggled your mind for so long is an extremely satisfying feeling! I look forward to working with your family and passing my love of learning along to your children.

I've wanted to be a teacher since I was in high school because I want to help others achieve their academic goals as I have, and I've found that tutoring is a great way of doing this as well! I've worked as a developmental mathematics tutor at Illinois State University for one and a half years where I help college students succeed in pre-algebra and algebra courses. I've also worked as a private tutor for college algebra, pre-calculus, and calculus. I'm currently a senior at Illinois State University studying secondary mathematics education and K-12 computer science education, and I am participating in a year-long student teaching internship at Normal West High School in Bloomington-Normal Illinois. As an educator and a tutor, I believe that mathematics is best taught through exploration and problem-solving, where students are encouraged to learn mathematics by solving and reasoning through problems.

I am passionate about helping students because I believe in the transformative power of education. I understand the struggles and frustrations that can arise when trying to understand complex concepts or juggling multiple responsibilities. This empathy drives me to support students in overcoming obstacles, providing guidance, and sharing strategies that have helped me succeed. Witnessing the growth and confidence of myself and my peers as they conquer academic hurdles fuels my dedication to serving as a mentor and resource for others on their educational journey. Throughout my college years, I've actively engaged in tutoring and mentoring roles, both informally within my peer group and formally through workplaces. These experiences have equipped me with valuable insights into the diverse learning styles and needs of students. Whether it's explaining a challenging concept in a clear and accessible manner or offering encouragement during moments of doubt, I've honed my ability to connect with students and foster an environment conducive to learning and growth. My passion for helping students extends beyond the classroom, as I've also volunteered in community outreach programs aimed at providing educational support to underserved populations, further solidifying my commitment to making a positive impact through education. I continue to pursue my education at ISU, where I am obtaining my Bachelor's Degree. Currently, I am working towards my Elementary Education degree with endorsements in reading, math, and special education. In my tutoring experiences, I offer support across a range of subjects, including Reading, Math, drawing, and more. My all-time favorite subject is reading. I have a Bachelor's in French and Theatre and a Master's degree in French, both from Illinois State university. I held a teaching assistantship during my Master's studies for which I taught a French class at the university. During the summers I worked in the French language-immersion camp. While in college I did a study abroad program in France and after finishing my Master's I lived and worked in France for a year teaching English in schools. The majority of my experience has been teaching languages, and although I can teach other subjects, languages and culture are what I truly have a passion for.Through my various experiences, I have taught languages to students ages 4-18 and above, have taught in a classic classroom environment with all the latest technological aides, and taught outdoors through activities, games, and music.I believe that each student is unique and has their own learning style, which is why it can be tough for many students to thrive solely through learning in a typical classroom environment. Tutoring offers a more focused, individualized atmosphere which enables the tutor to tailor the lessons to the student for them to have an optimal learning experience. I have found that the best results happen when language, or any subject for that matter, is taught through a variety of different activities that are interactive and engaging.Outside of teaching and learning languages, my interests and hobbies include theatre, music/singing, reading, watching TV and movies, travel, fashion, and spending time with my friends and family. I also enjoy challenges and new experiences.

I have also used many different curriculums so I can be flexible and use whatever material works best for your student to succeed. I am passionate about education, and it shows in my tutoring. Making education fun and demonstrating how important it is for children is something I strive to do with every session. One thing about me is that I love to travel. I studied abroad in Italy during college in which I was able to observe at the American School of Milan. During my studies at ISU, I had the opportunity to spend a year in Angers, France immersing myself in the language and culture.I firmly believe that students are capable of learning a language if they are willing to put in the extra effort. Daily practice and exposure to the studied language will improve comprehension and production. Students must also be willing to express themselves, to the best of their abilities, in the French language in order to feel more at ease in the language. Errors are not failure but a way to learn for the future.

About ten years ago I decided to enter the teaching profession, and I have come to absolutely love it. I really like working with young people, not least because they intuitively understand as I do that learning should be fun and that few great things are accomplished without a laugh or two along the way; ultimately, however, it is about learning and personal growth, and nothing I have ever done professionally comes close to the satisfaction I feel when a student describes a goal, works toward that goal, and then achieves it. I believe passionately in the power of learning to bring understanding, happiness and efficacy to every individual, and I know that any student, any where, when given the proper support, can achieve all of those rewards.

When I was in high school, I remember seeing the joy of my math teachers when they would teach in class. This inspired me to become a high school math teacher. The first step was becoming a peer tutor to my classmates. This lead to tutoring math to college students. Then tutoring students while working as a TA. Then I worked as a data scientist which not only did I understand more how to apply math in the workspace, but also learned how to explain math concepts to coworkers without a strong math background. This helped me to shape my tutoring philosophy to relate to the person being tutored and this opened the door to me teaching high school calculus 1 & calculus 2!

Teaching Spanish has been a very rewarding and enjoyable experience. I believe the higher you can go with your education, the better you are to make yourself more marketable. Learning Spanish is not only fun, and easy, but also beneficial in terms of personal growth, travel, building relationships, and career prospects. Working with students one on one or in groups is rewarding and enjoyable. The goal is to get them to the next level in acquiring the knowledge that they seek. In my spare time I enjoy singing in my church choir, traveling, and spending time with my family.
