I am Melissa Swanson, a dedicated educator with a Master's degree in Special Education from Northeastern Illinois University and over 10 years of experience teaching diverse student populations across elementary, middle, and high school levels. My passion lies in teaching English and history, particularly through tailored approaches that meet individual learning styles, whether auditory, visual, or kinesthetic. For the past four years, I have focused on online instruction, allowing me to effectively engage students through interactive lessons and technology. I am certified to teach in Illinois and specialize in Adult ESL/ELL, Adult Literacy, and English Grammar and Syntax. My commitment to fostering a supportive learning environment drives my motivation to help all students succeed in their academic journeys.

Helping students has been a passion of mine since high school. This is. because I had a couple of very passionate and enthusiastic teachers who taught me so much about life and the world and really helped to prepare me for the years after graduation. I have been an instructor and coach for many years from high school through university. I have a double bachelors degree in three different majors which are Anthropology, political science, and classics, as well as a Master's degree in Linguistics. During my studies I learned to speak Spanish and some Arabic and all of these subjects are areas I tutor in along with English and Essay writing. Also, I am applying to law school this fall to pursue a career in international human rights and immigration law and plan to teach university students in the legal field after a number of years of working in each of those areas of law. I am a firm believer in education being a means to not only make a person wiser or more intelligent but also more morally just, kind, caring and flexible in response to changes that a person may encounter in the future. My philosophy on teaching and learning is that a student can learn anything they want to so long as they put in the effort, but a knowledgable, empathetic, observant, dedicated and patient tutor will make the effort of that student much more efficient and that is what you will get with me as your tutor. Outside of Academics I am a passionate lover of nature and volunteer at the Bill Jarvis Bird sanctuary here in Lakeview Chicago as well as for the Kankakee Cultivators in Kankakee where most of my family lives. I also love hiking, camping, and biking and kayaking through nature with friends and love to swim and read books on all sorts of topics. Currently my favorite book is "A People's Future of the United States" which is a collection of short stories. My teaching philosophy is to connect students academic knowledge to their personal life. I believe that by doing so students will be able to learn abstract academic concepts on a personal level. I'm a passionate learner and I love to spread the passion of learning on to other students along with quality content knowledge.I am a senior at Northeastern Illinois University Graduating in May 2017 with a Bachelors of Arts in Elementary Education and a minor in middle school Math and Science. I'm a passionate teacher and I love teaching using engaging and creative technology and resources. When I'm not teaching I love playing the Cello, Flute, and Drums. I'm very adventurous and travel at any opportunity I get.

Currently, I am working as a special education teacher for Chicago Public Schools. I have worked as a substitute teacher at various schools and have had the pleasure of working with students of different personalities and educational levels. I am completing my Masters program in May of 2015 and begin student teaching in January. I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). My Master's program is being completed at Northeastern Illinois University.I have the most experience working with students from 1st grade through 8th grade. My strength is in reading and writing, but I have experience with all of the elementary and middle school subjects. I work with students in small groups, as well as one on one, and believe that all students need to feel their learning is relevant in order to help them comprehend the content. I believe students should feel comfortable voicing their concerns, and discussing their frustrations and fears in order to achieve the best results. I believe in promoting a warm learning environment in which the student can feel excitement towards learning and achieving new goals.

After receiving an undergraduate degree in English, I went on to get a Master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language. This opened the door to many opportunities to teach overseas in international/American schools. I've taught in Taiwan, China, Belarus, and Kyrgyzstan as well as schools in the Chicago area. I not only have a lot of experience in helping non-native English students improve their language skills, but I have also worked for over 10 years helping Middle School and High School students become more competent, clear writers and more efficient readers. I am passionate about assisting students develop their potential to communicate well. Through extensive interaction with people from many cultural and racial backgrounds, I believe I can connect with a wide variety of learners, motivating them to become the best they can possibly be.

I earned my bachelor's degree in accounting from Northeastern Illinois University. My MBA with a concentration in accounting and healthcare administration was earned only through Benedictine University. I really love the online experience, so I attended Nova Southeastern University online and earned my master's degree in taxation. Currently I am taking two courses in data analytics from St. Leo University online starting in January 2020. Then I am going to start working on my DBA in accounting starting in May. In addition, I am studying for the CPA exam and the United States Tax Court Exam. I have taught and tutored financial, managerial, cost, intermediate accounting both online and in the classroom. I do not have a favorite course to tutor as they are all different and present unique challenges to students. IN other words, I love them all!!!! My teaching philosophy/ tutoring style is to present the material in a way that students can understand and work them through the problems asking questions of the students along the way. Outside of academia I like to play classical piano, sing opera, hang out with my dog, go to the beach, and just chill. I consider myself to be a lifelong learner. I believe in the power of young people, and by tutoring I help students find that power for themselves. My background in education started at St. Lawrence University, where I obtained my Bachelors Degree in both Global Studies and Communication Arts. Currently, I am in graduate school at Northeastern Illinois University to obtain my M.A.T. in Elementary Education.My tutoring experience began during my undergraduate years, and continues today. I tutored writing for three years at St. Lawrence University, primarily with undergraduate and graduate students.I developed upon these skills upon graduation by participating in a year of service with Americorps by working in a middle school. Following that, I served as a teaching assistant in a Kindergarten classroom for two years and acted as the morning supervisor for all K-2 students. I tutored a wide range of K-6 students during this time in both math and writing.My favorite subject to tutor is writing, followed by reading. I have years of experience tutoring writing, and alongside the wealth of knowledge I have, I've found many ways to make writing fun and engaging even for struggling students.Some of my hobbies and interest include comic books, Star Wars, poetry, and photography. I often try and include pop culture into my tutoring sessions to enhance student engagement, especially when working with younger students.

I earned my B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies (with a double minor in Human Resource Development and Communication) from Northeastern Illinois University in May 2014. I am currently pursuing an MA in Human Resource Development from the same school. During my undergraduate coursework, I worked in the Center for Academic Writing as a peer tutor for students taking the writing intensive course required for degree completion. I tutored traditional college students as well as older adult college students. Many of the learners I had the opportunity to empower were ESL/ELL students. I am available to tutor in subjects related to writing and essay writing, such as composition, grammar and mechanics, and editing. I am able to help you with public speaking: preparing a speech, preparing yourself to deliver the speech, tips and trick for grabbing your audience's attention, when and how to engage your audience, and closing effectively. I base my tutoring style on a philosophy that communication (written and verbal) is key in our ability to productively engage in the world around us. It is my goal to empower learners with the ability to communicate effectively, by helping them to "find the story" and communicate it in a way that makes sense to others. I enjoy showing others how putting the story down in writing can be started using words and building upon them until they become a flow of organized thoughts and ideas. One of my greatest abilities is to help others conquer their fear of writing papers by showing them ways to organize the key concepts involved in effective essay writing and public speaking. Last, but not least, I can help you organize your study materials for coursework and exams and offer tips for effective study methods, based on your preferred learning style. In addition to tutoring and taking graduate classes, I am the treasurer and a board member for a small non-profit organization. My family and I grow many of our own organic produce in the spring through fall months in raised garden beds we built in our backyard. I love to explore the city for new restaurants and local businesses, so walk and take public transportation whenever I can.

I am currently studying at Northeastern Illinois University where I am a Music Education major. My main instrument is the clarinet and I dream of one day becoming a high school band director. I am a presidential scholar and honors student with a 4.0 GPA. I am extremely dedicated and hard working, and will go out of my way to ensure my students excel in whatever subject area we are working on.My interest in tutoring started in high school. I began working with students one on one before and after school. I helped with a wide variety of subjects ranging from music and writing to math and science. I've always loved helping others understand new concepts and watching a person's face light up when they finally understand a new concept. For me, it is one of the most satisfying things in the world. As the daughter of an English teacher, I have always valued education and have personally witnessed the positive impact that increased one-on-one attention can provide for students. I am a graduate of Northeastern Illinois University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with Middle School endorsement in three areas. Plus, I am a certified art teacher. Since graduation, I have worked in all realms of education including teaching and tutoring with students of multiple ages and ability levels.
