I am a certified teacher with a master's degree in Education which I received from Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus. My specialization is in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), but I also teach elementary school subjects. I studied Elementary Education and Anthropology in my undergraduate studies. With over 10 years’ experience as an educator I have worked with a diversity of audiences focusing on high school and college students. While working on my undergraduate degree in Biology at Northern Illinois University I started tutoring chemistry, biology, and math. This tutoring experience sparked my passion for teaching. After graduating I started working toward a Master of Science in Teaching at Portland State University. While in graduate school I tutored math and chemistry and was a teaching assistant for undergraduate science courses. Soon after graduating I started working at a local private college teaching math, environmental science, and ecology. Now over 6 years later I still love teaching student’s math and science. While attending college, I worked at the child care center on campus.Since I was a young child, I knew that I wanted to work with children. I graduated from Southwestern Illinois University in Edwardsville with a BS in Mathematics Education. My first job was teaching junior high school math in East St. Louis. Some of my students were nearly as old as I. It was quite an experience for a first year teacher. Very challenging. I moved to the northern part of the state and taught middle school and high school in a small district of 7000 students for 16 years. These experiences were varied. I team taught in a school with no walls. We had students working independently with no direct instruction. Each student was given independent tutoring and allowed to progress at their own pace. I also taught computer intro courses. I moved to Chicago in 1989. I taught high school algebra, geometry, and algebra 2 until I retired in 2016. I also tutored students who were prepping for the high stakes standardized tests they take as juniors. I taught after school programs and summer classes for students who were making up credits in order to graduate. I have learned to adjust my teaching approach for the students I have before me. I understand the concept of learning styles. I have experience with students who are bilingual and are struggling with English as a second language. I have worked with students of all skill levels. I have tried to remain healthy by running and going to the fitness center daily. I enjoy keeping current on the news and going out with friends. Most of the time, math class struggles are due to gaps in learning from previous year's math classes. Math really builds on itself from year to year.My philosophy is to help with any homework that is due, and then spend any remaining time covering concepts from previous years that may need some strengthening. For example...simpliyfing fractions will be difficult if you don't know your multiplication/division facts...so I would work on those topics if simplifying is difficult.For the younger kids, playing a game or two to break up the hour is always a great idea. Using visuals is great for any student of any age, particularly younger ones, so I will always draw/write things out, and encourage students to show all of their work. I will try to make math as fun as it can be!!
