It is my belief that all children/people can learn. As a tutor, it is my goal to create a safe, nurturing, and productive environment for students to learn. One of my top priorities as a tutor is to get to know my students, through observations; questions; and interactions. We are all different learners, and I believe we should build on our strengths and thus building on our confidence.

I believe every student has the chance to succeed. Some students simply need more tools than others. Thankfully, tutoring is an amazing way to provide these tools. I worked as a high school and middle school special education para for three years, and I have begun my first year teaching college English. I have learned to become very patient and adaptable to student needs. I have a bachelor's degree in film from Mary Baldwin University, and I have a master's decree in creative writing from Regis University. I tutor English and writing courses as these are the subjects I am most proficient in and most enjoy. I also help prepare students for state and college board testing, reviewing helpful strategies. I teach to help students succeed. Learning styles differ greatly, so students should be treated as individuals. Tutoring helps focus on an individual so they can be the best they can be. Outside of academia, I love movies and television. I also really enjoy comic books.

As a math teacher with more than ten years experience, I find that my favorite teaching moments have been helping students find confidence in math. My favorite courses to teach are high school math courses like Algebra, Geometry, and PreCalculus. However, I loved my time teaching Middle School and opening up the possibilities in STEM to my students. My graduate degree in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment has helped me gear my teaching to each of my students using varied approaches and data-driven techniques.

I have worked at an amusement park, I have been a hairstylist, a wife, a stay at home mom, a college student, a special education teacher, and a reading specialist . . . in that order! My education continues as I learn more about reading research. I encourage my students to reach for their dreams, do their best, become independent, and love themselves as they are. I have a special interest in hidden disabilities and I do not see a person as disabled. I believe that a person is not the label; they are so much more than that and should never settle for anything less than they deserve.

My own experience with a child with special needs, over 20 yrs ago, taught me what kind of teacher I wanted to be --- compassionate, yet challenging (with reasonable expectations). And...most of all...FUN! If your child(ren) are struggling at all with school, I would consider it an honor to be your child's on-line teacher. I have a great deal of experience with English -- writing and speaking -- and have a specialty with working with children with special needs. I am currently a 2nd grade Special Education Teacher at our local school, where I teach reading and math interventions.
