I am a recent graduate from the Math Honors program at University of Tennessee, Knoxville and I will begin my PhD in Mathematics at University of California, Santa Barbara this fall. Like many students whom I've tutored, I have not always been a successful mathematics student. In fact, it wasn't until later on in my undergraduate degree that I decided to take on a mathematics major. Choosing to make mathematics a career has changed my life and been incredibly rewarding both in my professional and personal life. Besides the basic math skills needed in live, mathematics may seem irrelevant if you aren't planning to be a mathematician or engineer, but it is such an important subject because it teaches you how to think. It helps you better understand science and think critically about complex problems. I also believe that the rigor of thought which it provides can help you in your personal life by helping you discern truth from untruth, and understand when someone's logic (including your own) may not be logical at all.An important thing that I have realized is that mathematics is challenging and it requires work to achieve success. More importantly, even though mathematics can be difficult for myself, I have found that one of the keys in my success was to stop fearing mathematics and reassuring myself that I *can* do it. Part of the beauty of learning math (or any subject) is struggling and making mistakes and working your way through a problem by understanding. It is humbling to accept that it is okay to be wrong and trying to understand why you were wrong in the first place. Learning math has also built my own confidence and it has made me an independent learner. Having tutored a diverse group of students, I have learned that anyone can understand mathematical concepts to a reasonable level. I also encourage my students that it is okay (and highly recommended!) to seek help when it is needed. I too would not have achieved the same success if I had not sought assistance from my teachers and mentors. Mathematics does not always come quickly even to the most skilled students, but if you seek help, continue to practice, and are confident in your abilities, you will achieve success! My first real experience tutoring students occurred in when I took multivariable calculus and linear algebra courses during undergrad. I performed very well in these courses and I wanted to help my friends and peers achieve the same success. I began leading study sessions to review for exams and many of the students improved significantly, developing the critical reasoning skills necessary for success in mathematics. I am grateful for my desire to help my colleagues improve because this experience also helped me learn the material in more depth, and I otherwise would have never realized my potential for teaching.Since then, during my last three years at UT I was fortunate to work at the university math tutorial center, where I regularly engaged students to help them achieve success in their math courses. Providing students with a deeper understanding was incredibly rewarding and motivated me to develop new ways to build their intuition. Many students continually struggle with fundamental concepts in mathematics. I have found that one of the core causes of this issue is that rather than being challenged to think critically about mathematical problems, students instead develop methodical ways to solve the problems which rely heavily on memorization. As a tutor, I aim to help students build necessary skills to think critically about mathematical problems. My goal is to help motivate why mathematical solutions work and help students better understand how they should approach similar problems. I believe this approach to learning mathematics makes the process much less problematic---rather than feeling fearful when trying to attack problems, you begin to ask yourself "How should I think about this problem? What do I know, and how can I use this information to arrive at the conclusion?".I have experience tutoring a broad list of subjects, including:- algebra: Algebra I & II, college algebra, intermediate algebra- precalculus/trigonometry- elementary calculus: Calculus I & II, AP Calculus AB/BC- multivariable calculus: Calculus III- ordinary differential equations- elementary and abstract linear algebra- intro to proofs (set theory, induction, function theory, etc.)- abstract algebra- point-set topologyI have had the most experience tutoring elementary calculus, as this subject was highly requested at the math tutorial center at UT. I have also taken an honors sequence in real analysis, in which we study the theory behind calculus on a deeper level. Thus, I understand the fundamental concepts very well, and I can better determine the issues that students face when studying the subject. I also plan to be a teaching assistant for a calculus course at UCSB this fall, where I will be responsible for teaching recitation sections. Preparing for this job has helped me become a more skilled teacher of the subject. One of my favorite courses to tutor is linear algebra. A particular issue with this course is that many lecturers teach this with a focus on nothing more than methods of solving systems of equations but fail to help students understand the underlying theory and make connections between the different topics within the broad subject. I have many practice problems and examples on-hand to help students better understand how systems of linear equations relate to matrices acting on vector spaces. I also like to provide geometric intuition for the topic to help the subject "come to life".

I am a 21-year-old Honors Political Science student at the University of Tennessee, graduating in May 2026, with a strong academic foundation in government, history, and analytical writing. My experience preparing for and taking the LSAT has strengthened my ability to break down complex concepts, think critically, and approach challenging material with clarity and structure. Beyond academics, I have been actively involved in fraternal life at UTK, where I received multiple awards for member education and advancement. Through this experience, I developed a passion for mentoring others, adapting to different learning styles, and helping peers build both understanding and confidence. As a tutor, I am committed to creating a supportive, student-focused environment where concepts are made accessible and engaging. All in all, I look forward to tutoring you or your child on the given subjects that I excel in and I am open to tutoring anyone as long as they are willing to learn. I am very patient so I will be sure to take my time with the material and ensure that I present it in a way that is tailored to the student's needs and personality to ensure their understanding.
I have 3 years of experience as a math tutor, and I want to keep doing this as much as I can because I love being a good teacher and I enjoy making people more comfortable with math.
My name is Amanda, and I'm a Biomedical Engineering student at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. I've spent the last few years living deep in math, science, and engineering, everything from calculus and differential equations to genetics, fluid dynamics, and systems modeling. Along the way I've found that I enjoy explaining the "why" behind problems just as much as solving them myself, which is what draws me to tutoring with Varsity Tutors. In my own coursework, I've often been the person classmates text when they're stuck before an exam or lab report. I'm used to breaking down dense material, building step-by-step roadmaps through practice problems, and turning intimidating topics into patterns that actually make sense. In research and internship settings, I've also had to translate complex technical ideas into clear language for people with very different backgrounds, which has strengthened my ability to meet students where they are. My tutoring style is patient, structured, and collaborative. Early on, I like to figure out how a student thinks, what they already know, where the gaps are, and what their goals and timelines look like. From there, I focus on building a strong conceptual foundation, then layering in strategies for problem-solving, test-taking, and independent study so that they leave each session more confident and more capable of tackling work on their own. Ultimately, I want students to feel that they have someone in their corner who genuinely cares about their progress. Helping a student go from "I'm just not a math/science person" to "I can actually do this" is one of the most rewarding experiences I know, and I'd be excited to bring that energy and support to Varsity Tutors.
I graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelors degree in English Education. Over the last 20 years, I have successfully tutored students of all ages in a variety of subjects. I am passionate about learning because I feel that an individual can learn new things throughout their life and expand their world view. My favorite field of tutoring is humanities as it relates to historical events. My interests include reading, theater, art and gardening.
I received my Bachelor of Science degree from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville (2022) in Animal Science (Pre-Vet concentration) and Psychology (Neuroscience concentration). Following graduation I was accepted into Lincoln Memorial University's Master of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences program which I graduated from in December 2023. While I tutor several scientific subjects, I am most passionate about Neuroscience and Psychology. I believe that even an introductory education in these subjects can change students lives and how they think about themselves. I am passionate about education and have been teaching students in one area or another since I was 14 and a TA in an after school program called "Mad About Science!" My mother was the best math and science teacher I ever knew and her influence lives on through me in how I want to impact the lives of students today.
I have always loved learning. As I determined my career path, I realized the joy I experience in working with people with disabilities. I also realized learning does not always create joy for others (in some instances it creates anxiety or anger). My passion is to specifically help people who feel frustrated and angry about learning for any reason. I want to be the catalyst for a new educational experience.I left a career in Advertising in 1999 and chose to educate myself on how to work with people with disabilities. In 2001, I received a Masters Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. Along the way, I worked with adolescents in rehabilitation for drug abuse and traumatic brain injuries. I worked with adolescents in a residential facility and adults in residential reentry program after incarceration. Finally, I worked with college students with learning disabilities and children, engaged in a community mental health program, while living at home. In 2009, I chose to work in Special Education in the public school system. In 2012, I earned my second Masters Degree. I have worked in the public school system since 2009 as a Special Education teacher because I believe all students deserve to have a teacher dedicated to their academic needs despite their disabilities. I also work with students without disabilities that simply have achievement gaps. I teach my students how to succeed in school. We work on the work, but, more importantly, we work on how to engage in the learning environment to be successful. There are three basic rules I teach all my students. The first rule is: Arrive on time and be prepared to engage in learning. The second rule is: Maintain a positive attitude about learning no matter the challenges. The third rule is: Always submit your work so your teachers can attest to your efforts (even if you don't understand or your work is not accurate). Teachers will see how they can help and often feel even more committed to help. The bottom line is I am committed to teaching and learning.

I am a recent college graduate who is excited to share my hard-earned knowledge with students in need of help. I majored in a Geography and Economics with an emphasis on urban studies and quantitative analysis, but the academic skills and concepts from those disciplines apply to a large number of social science fields. I think that education at its best is a collaborative experience between students and teachers to meet the students' goals, and I approach tutoring with that same mindset. I will work with students to help them define their goals and then act as a coach and mentor to help them achieve. In general, I'm a cheery, extroverted guy. I love talking to people about just anything, but Economics and my cat are my favorite topics. In my more introverted moments, I play video games, watch Netflix, and read all kinds of books. I also keep up to date on the world around me by reading the NYTimes and Wall Street Journal during the quiet moments of the day and by reading a "smart" non-fiction book every once in a while. Most of all though, I spend my time thinking about interesting problems and solutions because I am fortunate to truly love what I do.
I have my Masters Degree in teaching Elementary Education, my English as a Second Language certification, and a Bachelors in studio art. For the past 9 years, I have taught in both in the United States and in Europe. I always strive to make sure my students have fun while learning!
