I have earned my Bachelor's in Mathematics at the University of North Texas, and a PhD in Mathematics Education at Texas State University. Since graduation, I have been working as a Professor of Instruction at universities. I have taught many years at the university level over all levels of mathematics. Predominantly, this has been with algebra, pre-calculus, and calculus students. My philosophy for teaching is to prepare my students with a foundation in the content of the course as well as how to apply that knowledge in new contexts. I find it key to help students answer the questions they have while also preparing them to answer any other possible questions that could come from a context.

I strive to learn new things every day. I graduated from the University of North Texas two years ago, and I find myself drawn to learning environments and seeking out new knowledge. Possessing a curious mind has lead me to many opportunities to not only learn more, but to teach others as well. I think there is nothing better than seeing someone's face light up with understanding, finally reaching that "ah-ha" moment, and being a part of that just makes it all the better. I have experience tutoring groups of students in US History, Art History, and German. I have the most experience in both German and History tutoring. I am conversational in German and constantly read novels that are written in German. As for History, I tutored with my university for five semesters, and created different activities that were later incorporated to the program. Art History is a personal favorite of mine and it is one of the two degrees I hold, the other being Anthropology.Having taught many different types of people, I learned that there is no one way to teach someone. Everyone learns differently and it is important to find out the learning style that fits each student, while still being able to have fun. When working with groups this can be hard at times, different people will learn at different paces, and so it is always important to remember to keep everyone interested and paying attention. Creating activities for a group atmosphere is something that I have a lot of experience with and excel at. Lastly, I believe that one of the most important things to keep in mind is relating the information back to the students interests, keeping them motivated and excited to learn more.

"Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime." - Lao Tzu. Many instructors mistakenly approach the task of teaching with the narrow goal of imparting knowledge of a single lesson or unit to their students, forgetting to train such students how to obtain such knowledge independently. They also forget to connect the gained knowledge to other units and disciplines. The more connections a student makes, the more they are able to retain and apply the new material. I strive to approach tutoring sessions from Lao Tzu's perspective and I enjoy the challenge of taking a concept that is confusing to a student and turning into a crystal clear idea. I accomplish this by asking thought provoking questions that walk students through logical processes. They eventually learn to navigate through logical processes with less direction. Additionally, I understand that no two students think alike and once I determine how an individual student processes information, then I can quickly devise a lesson tailored to that particular student.I am very patient and down to earth with students. Having a good relationship with them is essential to building the trust needed for them to be comfortable in taking the risk to solve a problem independently.I have experience teaching Biology, Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus AB at the high school level and I've taught College Algebra. I also tutored math subjects ranging from algebra to calculus and science subjects such as chemistry, physics, and biology at the Math and Science Center for Killeen ISD.Besides being a teaching professional, I also enjoy playing tennis, doing anything outdoors, studying the Bible, and painting.

I first began tutoring during grad school, but educating others has been a part of my life since second grade, when my teacher paired me with a struggling student for the majority of the school year and pleaded with me to help him stay on track. I can still remember quietly whispering variations of the instructions to him and helping him complete his work after I'd finished mine. This propensity to help struggling workers has stayed with me. Although I didn't study education in college or grad school, I left school feeling quite passionate about helping other succeed. I applied and was accepted to Teach for America, where I was assigned to teach at an inner-city middle school in Dallas, Texas. I asked to be paired with the students who were having the hardest time finding traction in the academic setting and went on to teach variations of remedial and intervention reading for the next six years. Alongside these intervention courses, I have also taught general ed Social Studies and English.I believe that everyone wants to be good at the work given to them, but that not everyone is set up for success at every venture along the way. My goal is to meet students where they are, assure them that it's okay to be there, and motivate them to want to take that next step when they're ready. Once we've reached that point, I can step in and provide all the tools and strategies necessary to succeed!I am patient and calm with my students and always try to keep a smile and a sense of humor throughout the tutoring session. I hope to bring confidence and inspiration to all who reach out for help!

I have a long-standing passion for tutoring because I want to help other people come to understand the subjects I've loved since I was a kid. I greatly enjoy helping people become proficient in these subjects and seeing the light of understanding suddenly turn on. As a result, I tutored multiple hours every week during my time at the University of North Texas, and I relished the opportunity to be a teaching assistant during my time at Vanderbilt University. My educational background enables me to educate in multiple areas of mathematics and physics with great proficiency. I graduated Magna Cum Laude as a Distinguished Honors Scholar with a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from the University of North Texas in 2013, and graduated with a Master of Arts in physics from Fisk University two years later. More recently I attained my childhood dream of a Doctorate of Philosophy in biomedical engineering from Vanderbilt University. Because of my education, I am comfortable tutoring math subjects up to multivariable calculus and differential equations, as well as college physics.I love both math and physics, although I enjoy teaching calculus and calculus-based physics the most. Calculus is such an elegant subject, and opens a whole new world to students. Applying calculus to physics enables students to see the beauty of physics. I fell in love with physics in high school, but it wasn't until I took calculus-based physics that the elegance of the field hit home for me. I strongly believe that the goal of teaching and tutoring should be to give students the tools to educate and think critically for themselves. As a tutor, my goal is to complement the teaching students are receiving elsewhere and fill gaps in students' understanding of the subject. In the end, my goal is to enable my students to progress and succeed without my help.Of course, everyone has interests outside of the subjects they're teaching or studying. I love spending time with my wife and two young boys. I also love reading, particularly science fiction and fantasy, and I love playing tabletop roleplaying games.

With a Bachelor's degree in psychology, a minor in anthropology, and a Master's degree in English--specifically, creative writing--more specifically, fiction--I have developed a broad and interdisciplinary knowledge base. This experience allows me to help a wide range of fellow travelers navigate their way along their chosen academic path. This term--fellow traveler--is how I conceive of the relationship between student and tutor: we both come to a given subject with varying degrees of knowledge and experience, and I try to lend mine in helping students find their own answers and understanding of their given subjects or tasks. I teach writing at the college level, but I also have several years of experience in 1-on-1 tutoring in a number of subjects, including preparation for the SAT, ACT, and ISEE tests in math and science, as well as in the humanities, social sciences, reading, writing, and grammar. While I can tutor in many different subjects, my favorite subject to tutor is English, particularly reading and writing. A little-known secret is that reading is a lot of fun, but this can get lost in the process of teaching it. I try to find a way to connect whatever I am reading to my own life, or, more importantly, to your life. Whenever we can make such a connection with the author, our reading becomes deeper and more relevant to our own lives. As for writing, this is an extension of one's thinking, so learning how to write with proficiency also means learning how to think with proficiency. Writing is a big subject, however, and becoming proficient can be a lifelong process. I take this approach into my tutoring. We can focus on basic grammar or advanced rhetorical choices, but in every case, I try to help you develop a foundation from which to continue develop your writing. In my free time, I enjoy playing cards (poker and bridge, in particular), playing the guitar and/or bass guitar, and writing fiction. In addition, I like to play video games and watch basketball and American grid-iron football--my love for the Dallas Cowboys is deep and abiding.Contact me for help with test preparation or studying your subject.

I believe every person is like a diamond with many facets to allow them to shine. Each person has a spec in them that makes them unique. These flaws can sometimes catapult us into the fourth dimension by making us more compassionate, understanding individuals. Dyslexia runs in my family, so I sought out a multisensory way to teach highly intelligent people who learn differently how to gain access to the knowledge they crave through print. In the upper grades, it is my mission to introduce students to a genre, author, or series that interests them in order to help them feel comfortable and enjoy reading. There is a whole new world out there in books, podcasts, audible books, etc. that will enable readers to gain access to new knowledge. It is my pleasure to stand along side of students to help them gain open the door to this new and wonderful place!

Going through school as a pre-med student, has taught me a lot when it comes to learning. You can't only rely on memorizing facts, but you have to be able to learn and comprehend facts. That's what I try to teach my students.
