For the past 5 years, teaching and tutoring math and statistics students within the Minnesota State colleges and universities system has been both challenging and satisfying. Helping students overcome their math frustration is a highlight. These subjects are not for everyone. However, it seems reasonable that successful learning comes when tutoring complements individual interests and educational goals. My name is Shavon Rodwell Brown and I an experienced educator of over 10 years. I have taught grades K-5, served as a reading specialist and worked as an adjunct professor. In addition, I have served as a student teacher supervisor and presented at educational conferences. My educational background includes a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, Master's degree in Reading and Literacy. Most recently I completed my doctorate degree in education. I am a graduate of the College of Charleston from where I received a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education. I also have a Master's degree in Elementary Reading and Math from Walden University. I have had the pleasure of teaching for many years. My experiences include teaching first grade for ten years and kindergarten for two years. In addition to that, I also had the unique experience of teaching a combination class of third and fourth graders in an International Academy in Costa Rica. One of the accomplishments I am most proud of is my Orton Gillingham certificate for teaching literacy to students with dyslexia. I have a son who has dyslexia and dysgraphia. I have seen the struggles firsthand and understand the many areas of support that students with dyslexia need. I have been teaching for 7 years. As the pandemic was starting in March 2020, I was leaving my job for maternity leave. I decided to take the following year off to be home with my daughter. I'm a current medical student located in Chicago studying for my board exams. I was home-schooled during middle and high school and from this experience I learnt the importance of self motivation as well the need to have someone that will give you the extra push when you need it. The flexibility of homeschooling gave me the opportunity to participate in the dual enrollment program at my local community college in Gastonia, NC. It was during this time, my first experience in a public school setting, that I realized my love for tutoring. During a college math course I was asked by a fellow student to explain the concepts we were going over in class. She later told me about failing 3 consecutive exams and was on the verge of quitting. After our third session together she began to see improvements in her homework grades and was able to score an 88% on her math exams. To me the greatest highlight of my time at that institution was when we "high-fived" after she got her test score.I transferred to Queens University after high school graduation; there I was offered a position as a physics and organic chemistry tutor my junior and senior year. I've always taken pride in helping students, and hold to the belief that anything worth doing is worth doing well; even when the job is tutoring. One Saturday I was stuck in the library for 8 hours with a tutee going over concepts in physics. Of course after our long session we both swore never to look at physics again, but the following Monday there I was at the Center for Academic Success with another student.Throughout my educational endeavor I've being privileged to help students both in my class and the classes behind me. At Queens University I received the tutor of the year award, as well as an award for a research project I presented both at the school and at a national science conference in West Virginia. As an ordained evangelist, she is also passionate about using biblical text to strengthen the audience's faith. Dr. Steph is the CEO/Founder of Top Tier Coaching/Educational Consulting. As a coach, she helps women ages 21 and above to overcome past challenges of life so that they can focus on securing a successful future as desired. Her goal is to target underlying key personal, social, and emotional issues with which clients may be struggling. As a consultant, she is driven to address 5 hot topics: Balancing Academics with College Life, Collaborative Practices Among Educators, Transformative Co-teaching Practices, Bullying in the Workplace, From Grief to Gratitude, and Parental Involvement. She is excited to bring her gifts and experience to the table to serve others in an even broader capacity while continuing to lead a life of intention, purpose, and fulfillment. I am a 1991 graduate of The University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts. I received my Masters of Arts in Education in 2008. From 2002- 2021 I was a Middle School English teacher. I currently tutor students through The Literacy Lab, in a public school setting, and Sylvan Learning Center in grades 1st-12th in Reading. As an enthusiastic teacher, I am dedicated to helping students grow a love for learning.
