My approach to teaching is more or less a fusion of my experiences as an undergraduate, my interests in philology and linguistics, and my teaching experience at the University of Minnesota.Teacher-centered vs. student-centered teaching:In my teaching I have maintained the principles of proficiency-based instruction, and have been content to spend more time in a student-centered atmosphere than I probably would have been hitherto.I will, however, switch to a more traditional approach at times, that is, to a teacher- centered environment, concentrating on specific issues of grammar, structure, or style. Students appreciate the input of an expert, especially when they have a very limited knowledge base in the target language.My warm-ups are most always based on one-on-one teacher-student interaction within the classroom, which encourages students to make themselves heard in a friendly and supportive environment. Such warm-ups in recent years have fallen in one of several categories:1. Asking students to give information about the world (which, I remind them, includes the classroom).2. Asking students to discuss what they did the previous evening.3. Asking students to discuss what they did not do the previous evening.4. Asking students to make statements and have the rest of the class determine whether those statements are true or not.5. Giving students 30 seconds to compose a question, which is then asked aloud.6. Having students suggest random "answers" and having other students pose appropriate questions.Reading:As teachers, we encourage students to read for general ideas, not details. This is, I feel, the logical and correct approach. The difficulty is that it is easier said than done, especially when one uses authentic materials designed for native speakers. Whatever the text, pre-reading exercises must be carefully chosen and students must be prepared for key vocabulary items that will appear in the text.I have attempted to assist in vocabulary building by creating picture dictionaries and matching exercises based on the reading, examples of which are to be found later in this document. I also stress and encourage reading aloud in class at all levels to practice pronunciation and sentence intonation. I have furthermore put together storyboards for first-year reading texts, so that stories can be followed more easily.Technology:In the last few years, I have found that technology has allowed me, as an instructor, to design materials that look more professional and creative. Using graphics programs and experimenting with word processing programs encourages one to think a bit more like a designer, and thus try to see things from a student's perspective.The importance of technology in the classroom has also become more clear to me over the years: in addition to fostering a variety of learning approaches, the use of videos, computers, chatrooms, and, especially, internet activities constantly reminds students that they are not learning some secret language of a classroom, but one spoken by millions throughout the real world.One must always beware, however, of using technology for its own sake. The fact that a good online or computer exercise exists does not mean it needs to be used. As a coordinator (see below) I encouraged my instructors to pick and choose which exercises and types of technology they felt benefitted students most and, moreover, to avoid those exercises in which the student's negotiation of the task becomes overly complex with regard to the objective.General:My success rate in the first, second, and third years has, I think, been very high, and I have always prided myself on the fact that my courses have been in the main both informative and entertaining. Students have appreciated my stepping back from the fore to let them carry out tasks and activities on their own, but they also like the fact that I am willing to take class time to explain concepts that are unclear or linguistic information that I find relevant. I am continuing my education in Medical Laboratory Technology with the desire to teach it. I am passionate about science, especially Biology, and love to instill that passion in my students. I instill a variety of modalities when I teach and assess which one works best for a particular student. I believe all students can learn as long as their learning style is addressed. I love to travel, but not in the traditional ways; I white water rafted through Costa Rica, explored the rainforest on foot, hiked through Dominican Republic, and tracked wolves one summer in Yellowstone National Park. In my spare time I kayak, run and read a lot of science literature. I also enjoy being a backyard biologist exploring the plant and animal life that my surroundings have to offer.

I am a graduate of the College for Creative Studies and Wayne State University. I hold a BFA, MA, and MFA in Fine Arts. I also hold a teaching endorsement in art and I was a certified K-12 Art Teacher in three states for roughly four years at all levels. For the past 20 years, I have been involved in the teaching field off and on, whether it has been teaching art reading, after-school programs, or ESL to children and adults. I currently teach Adobe Illustrator, Animate, Photoshop, and Premiere to kids. I also teach gesture, figure, and portrait drawing. The reason I became a teacher and tutor is that I am an advocate for life-long learning and helping people. I believe that education is the key to enhancing the lives of others. I have a very relaxed and fun teaching style. Students respond positively to my kindness and sense of humor. I approach each student with patience and I am very adaptable to diverse learning styles. I focus on core concepts that will make my students succeed in their studies.

I am an experienced educator with 35 years of experience teaching in the area of Human Communication. My work has been with college students, dual-enrolled high school students, and high school debaters. I am passionate about helping students because when I was a student I did not receive much help from my teachers or my parents. My approach is to be honest with the students about how to succeed. I cover topics such as understanding expectations, time management, research, outlining, and of course Public Speaking and any other Human Communication subject. I focus on student success and work to empower students to take charge of their education. I help them with tasks such as communicating with their teacher and how to be effective in group learning situations. I received my education in Michigan and Florida. I have a PhD in Speech Communication Education from The Florida State University, a B.A and M.A in Speech Communication from Wayne State University, and by Sept. 2022 will hold a M.A. in Educational Studies from the University of Michigan along with a Certificate in Learning Experience Design. I tutor in the following subjects: Composition, Library Research, Outlining for papers and speeches, Debate, Public Speaking, and Student Success. My favorite subject is Student Success because if a student knows how to be a student, they can really thrive.My teaching philosophy involves student empowerment. My tutoring style is to treat students with respect and dignity, talk to them frankly, and support them in their learning journey. I tend to ask a lot of questions and work with the student to choose to set up personal goals. I then help them meet those goals. Outside of academia, I'm a big fan of live music and taking photos outside in nature. I also like to paint and draw.

My passion for teaching started when I was very young and I was diagnosed with dyslexia, a learning disability that causes letters and words to be transposed in my mind. I had to work very hard--my mother used flashcards over a long period--to develop my reading, and eventually I got up to speed enough to be a grade level. I knew then that teaching was a determining factor in what my mother had done for me, and moreover, what my life would eventually be about. I was very young then, and while dyslexia does not go away, I have achieved quite a bit despite it, attaining degrees in English, of all things, and composing lots of music and poetry over the years. My teaching philosophy--pedagogy, the pros call it--is student centered, where I try to engage the student where he/she is at, and then increase the rigor from there, utilizing a conversational and laid back and friendly style. Outside interests include playing jazz/rock fusion guitar and performing music at local open mics, listening to such artists as Miles Davis and Ornette Coleman, even taking the occasional gig or poetry reading, and reading, from fiction to poetry, and from philosophy to biographies.
