The word, "education" is a mid-16th century term that has two different Latin roots: educare, which means to train or mold, and educere, meaning to lead or draw out. The former entails rote memorization, perfecting a trade, and becoming a productive laborer. The American educational system has widely adopted this ethos, especially in regards to children of the working class. Educere - necessitating critical thinking, inquisitiveness, and innovation - has by and large been factored out of the equation. Consequently, American scholarship and ingenuity has suffered. Whether working over practice questions in a test booklet, reading an instructional manual or an obscure book for pleasure in a library corner, we are engaging with the words and ideas of others and measuring them for their value, use and relevance. Thinking is never done in total isolation anyway but rather is always a social exercise and activity. The best teaching and learning then, I think, allows us to consider knowledge, from the most practical to the most abstract, as both social exercise and activity. This means, as exercise, that we get comfortable with the necessary repetitions of learning--reading and writing, listening and speaking with consideration. As social activity, strong teaching and learning allows us to consider knowledge production as constantly unfolding, knowledge production as a place where self-expression and communication within a larger community are not only welcome but of absolute necessity.

I spent twenty-five years building relationships with students; I just happened to teach English. Without that relationship, there is no trust, no confidence, and no inclination to change or grow. Students must have faith in us and believe in our faith in them. Thirty years ago, I left a career in the film business to teach because I needed a career that I felt mattered. One that was important. And working with young people is important. It was the best professional choice I ever made.

My approach to teaching is more or less a fusion of my experiences as an undergraduate, my interests in philology and linguistics, and my teaching experience at the University of Minnesota.Teacher-centered vs. student-centered teaching:In my teaching I have maintained the principles of proficiency-based instruction, and have been content to spend more time in a student-centered atmosphere than I probably would have been hitherto.I will, however, switch to a more traditional approach at times, that is, to a teacher- centered environment, concentrating on specific issues of grammar, structure, or style. Students appreciate the input of an expert, especially when they have a very limited knowledge base in the target language.My warm-ups are most always based on one-on-one teacher-student interaction within the classroom, which encourages students to make themselves heard in a friendly and supportive environment. Such warm-ups in recent years have fallen in one of several categories:1. Asking students to give information about the world (which, I remind them, includes the classroom).2. Asking students to discuss what they did the previous evening.3. Asking students to discuss what they did not do the previous evening.4. Asking students to make statements and have the rest of the class determine whether those statements are true or not.5. Giving students 30 seconds to compose a question, which is then asked aloud.6. Having students suggest random "answers" and having other students pose appropriate questions.Reading:As teachers, we encourage students to read for general ideas, not details. This is, I feel, the logical and correct approach. The difficulty is that it is easier said than done, especially when one uses authentic materials designed for native speakers. Whatever the text, pre-reading exercises must be carefully chosen and students must be prepared for key vocabulary items that will appear in the text.I have attempted to assist in vocabulary building by creating picture dictionaries and matching exercises based on the reading, examples of which are to be found later in this document. I also stress and encourage reading aloud in class at all levels to practice pronunciation and sentence intonation. I have furthermore put together storyboards for first-year reading texts, so that stories can be followed more easily.Technology:In the last few years, I have found that technology has allowed me, as an instructor, to design materials that look more professional and creative. Using graphics programs and experimenting with word processing programs encourages one to think a bit more like a designer, and thus try to see things from a student's perspective.The importance of technology in the classroom has also become more clear to me over the years: in addition to fostering a variety of learning approaches, the use of videos, computers, chatrooms, and, especially, internet activities constantly reminds students that they are not learning some secret language of a classroom, but one spoken by millions throughout the real world.One must always beware, however, of using technology for its own sake. The fact that a good online or computer exercise exists does not mean it needs to be used. As a coordinator (see below) I encouraged my instructors to pick and choose which exercises and types of technology they felt benefitted students most and, moreover, to avoid those exercises in which the student's negotiation of the task becomes overly complex with regard to the objective.General:My success rate in the first, second, and third years has, I think, been very high, and I have always prided myself on the fact that my courses have been in the main both informative and entertaining. Students have appreciated my stepping back from the fore to let them carry out tasks and activities on their own, but they also like the fact that I am willing to take class time to explain concepts that are unclear or linguistic information that I find relevant. Indeed, in one first- year class, my eager and diligent students constantly pressed me for more and more philological information until I was forced to remind them that we had other material to look at in the modern language.My experiences have confirmed my beliefs that 1) traditional approaches can be used alongside newer ones as long as one's goals are clearly set, and 2) that how one teaches something is always as important as what one teaches.

Currently I am working as a postdoctoral research associate at the Department of Physics Creighton University, and am stationed at Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York. I also function as an adjunct associate professor of physics at Hofstra University. I started tutoring physics back in my home country, Sri Lanka, during my Bachelors degree. Since then I have been involved in tutoring with high school, freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior students. The strongest reason why I am an excellent teacher is the fact that I truly love the subject. I have devoted over 12 years of my life to specialize in physics, thus I have a very clear understanding of the concepts and experienced in explaining those to students. I am a person with loads of patience, kindness and understanding specially when it comes to teaching. I am really good at coming up with real life examples to help student understand the important aspects of physics principles. Even though I have not taken the tests; SAT math and MCAT physics, I am very confident of tutoring the students who need assistance in both math and physics. As becoming a University Professor is my career goal, I am truly and honestly passionate about been engaged in teaching and mentoring students. Therefore I look forward to lend my helping hand towards students to prosper in their education, as well as to grow up as individuals whom will successfully coop with the responsibilities in our society. Other than been involved in teaching, I am a BIG fan of music and a great singer my self. I love travel, hiking and camping which makes me a nature lover too.

I am a recent graduate from Ross University School of Medicine and received my undergraduate degree at Wayne State University and am a resident in pediatrics. I am passionate about tutoring students in USMLE because I understand that it is a difficult time for us all. This test tests our strength, mental stability and our endurance for lengthy hours. My philosophy is and always will be do to do your best and strive for excellence. That is what I teach my students and with my help, they are able to obtain this. Outside of academics, I enjoy cooking, traveling, and reading while outside. I also have a puppy named Sketchy who I spend a great deal of time with.

I attended the University of Detroit Mercy where I gained a Bachelor of Science in Biology. I have also recently graduated with a Masters of Basic Medical Sciences from Wayne State University. As you may be able to tell, I have had a passion for science, especially biology, for many years. My academic journey has given me an immense amount of experience with a wide range of subjects and tests. I know very intimately what it is like to be under pressure to perform well in school and on tests and therefore can relate to students under similar circumstances. I have had the opportunity to tutor many people in a wide range of ages and academic abilities in the past.I tutor a wide range of subjects but am most passionate about Math, Science, Reading, Writing, and Test Preparation. I believe the first and most vital step in working with a student is to identify specifically where he or she is struggling. Every student is different and deserves a teaching method that is tailored to them. I believe students learn best when they are guided along through discussion and hands-on methods as opposed to when they are lectured to; I also believe learning can and should be fun! When it comes to preparing for tests, I believe that what you know is only a small part of the puzzle; perfecting test-taking skills is equally important. I have taken many standardized tests throughout my life, and have been able to do well by understanding the tests and utilizing these skills.When I have spare time, I enjoy staying active by playing basketball and exercising. I also enjoy reading, sports, music and traveling. I look forward to helping you find your full potential on the road to success.

I earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in Spanish and minors in French and English. My Master's Degree was in Spanish Bi-lingual, Bi-cultural Education. I have a teaching certificate and according to the state of Michigan standards, I am "highly qualified" to teach Spanish, French and ESL k-12. I have taught students from kindergarten through the university level. In addition to working in public and private schools, I have taught language classes at the community college and university level as an adjunct instructor. One great part of my job is to help students who think that learning a foreign language is IMPOSSIBLE discover how easy it can be when they understand language patterns, have the right tools, and the right guidance!
