Statistics is one of those subjects where anxiety can become its own roadblock before a student ever opens the textbook. I've learned to pay attention to whether a student is struggling with a concept or struggling with fear, because the approach is different. When it's fear, the first step is the same one you'd take with anyone facing something new and scary: let them name it, express it, and feel heard. Rapport has to come before instruction. In a full classroom setting that kind of individual attention is hard to sustain, especially online. Tutoring lets me go straight to the students who need that one-on-one support most. I live and work remotely full time, which means online tutoring isn't a compromise for me. It's the format where I can do my best work with the students who need it most. My approach to teaching is more or less a fusion of my experiences as an undergraduate, my interests in philology and linguistics, and my teaching experience at the University of Minnesota.Teacher-centered vs. student-centered teaching:In my teaching I have maintained the principles of proficiency-based instruction, and have been content to spend more time in a student-centered atmosphere than I probably would have been hitherto.I will, however, switch to a more traditional approach at times, that is, to a teacher- centered environment, concentrating on specific issues of grammar, structure, or style. Students appreciate the input of an expert, especially when they have a very limited knowledge base in the target language.My warm-ups are most always based on one-on-one teacher-student interaction within the classroom, which encourages students to make themselves heard in a friendly and supportive environment. Such warm-ups in recent years have fallen in one of several categories:1. Asking students to give information about the world (which, I remind them, includes the classroom).2. Asking students to discuss what they did the previous evening.3. Asking students to discuss what they did not do the previous evening.4. Asking students to make statements and have the rest of the class determine whether those statements are true or not.5. Giving students 30 seconds to compose a question, which is then asked aloud.6. Having students suggest random "answers" and having other students pose appropriate questions.Reading:As teachers, we encourage students to read for general ideas, not details. This is, I feel, the logical and correct approach. The difficulty is that it is easier said than done, especially when one uses authentic materials designed for native speakers. Whatever the text, pre-reading exercises must be carefully chosen and students must be prepared for key vocabulary items that will appear in the text.I have attempted to assist in vocabulary building by creating picture dictionaries and matching exercises based on the reading, examples of which are to be found later in this document. I also stress and encourage reading aloud in class at all levels to practice pronunciation and sentence intonation. I have furthermore put together storyboards for first-year reading texts, so that stories can be followed more easily.Technology:In the last few years, I have found that technology has allowed me, as an instructor, to design materials that look more professional and creative. Using graphics programs and experimenting with word processing programs encourages one to think a bit more like a designer, and thus try to see things from a student's perspective.The importance of technology in the classroom has also become more clear to me over the years: in addition to fostering a variety of learning approaches, the use of videos, computers, chatrooms, and, especially, internet activities constantly reminds students that they are not learning some secret language of a classroom, but one spoken by millions throughout the real world.One must always beware, however, of using technology for its own sake. The fact that a good online or computer exercise exists does not mean it needs to be used. As a coordinator (see below) I encouraged my instructors to pick and choose which exercises and types of technology they felt benefitted students most and, moreover, to avoid those exercises in which the student's negotiation of the task becomes overly complex with regard to the objective.General:My success rate in the first, second, and third years has, I think, been very high, and I have always prided myself on the fact that my courses have been in the main both informative and entertaining. Students have appreciated my stepping back from the fore to let them carry out tasks and activities on their own, but they also like the fact that I am willing to take class time to explain concepts that are unclear or linguistic information that I find relevant. Indeed, in one first- year class, my eager and diligent students constantly pressed me for more and more philological information until I was forced to remind them that we had other material to look at in the modern language.My experiences have confirmed my beliefs that 1) traditional approaches can be used alongside newer ones as long as one's goals are clearly set, and 2) that how one teaches something is always as important as what one teaches.

I grew up in Southern California and attended the University of California at Santa Barbara until I graduated in 2008 with a degree in history. After being told to pursue a higher degree by my adviser, Dr. Harold Marcuse, I was accepted to CSU Pomona, where I obtained my Master's in History in 2010 with a focus on the Communist Party of the United States. My interests in the Communist Party extended from my studies of Cold War history at UCSB, and drove me to understand more about the Party's involvement with specific union organizing efforts during the 1930s. My Master's thesis exposed the connection between the CPUSA and one of their agricultural unions, the United Cannery, Agricultural, Packing and Allied Workers of America (UCAPAWA) and discussed the impact the union made on agricultural unionism in an era where national labor legislation did not protect agricultural workers.My thesis was welcomed as a special presentation at the 2011 Working-Class Studies Association held in Chicago, where I received positive feedback on my use of agriculture as a field for highlighting the ongoing importance of American Communist history and its ties with the U.S. Labor Movement. Following graduation in 2010, I began to dive actively into collecting oral histories of the CPUSA with the intention of hopefully one day donating it to the special collections at the Walter Reuther Library here at Wayne State. I was advised about Wayne State by my off-campus adviser, Dr. Vicki Ruiz. Over the course of five years, I collected 14 oral histories of current and non-current members of the CPUSA, ranging from its oldest generations to its youngest. After collecting a few testimonies, I sent parts of my work to the North American Labor History Conference here at Wayne State in 2012 to emphasize my desires to expand the available sourcework on CPUSA history as well as deposit the records at the Reuther. To emphasize my point, I presented three of the collected oral histories and showed how their stories unveil a side of American Communist history unavailable in existing scholarly works. I presented again at the NALHC in 2013 to show how quick I had expanded the amount of oral histories.Currently I am working in the PhD Program at Wayne to utilize my collected oral histories as a means for writing a generational history of the Communist Party in the United States and thus a narrative history of American Communism through the eyes of American Communists. This stands in contrast to existing narratives, which use FBI files and internal Party documents to craft the Party's overall meaning and history. This approach, while useful in understanding the political dimensions of American Communism, does little to show the history of American Communists as people. I am applying for the Graduate Professional Scholarship because it is one of the primary ways for me to continue this project and complete my degree. My oral history project alone has required me to seek out funding to support its ongoing development. The Graduate Professional Scholarship would ensure that whatever funding I have available can be put towards advancing the amount of research done, and ultimately lead to a better overall contribution to the historical record.

I have a Bachelor's of English and History from Lake Superior State University, a Master's in Literature from Central Michigan University, and a PhD in Rhetoric and Composition from Wayne State University. Since obtaining my PhD, I am certified work as director the writing center at Wayne State University and professor of undergraduate and graduate courses in the English department and Interdisciplinary studies. My professional and teaching experiences has given me the opportunity to work with a diverse range of students-from students in the nursing field, the radiology department, STEM, English, and beyond. I am also a chair or member of diverse committees at Wayne State University dedicated to student support, reading and writing initiatives, inclusivity and diversity, and interdisciplinary studies. I have experience teaching and tutoring a wide range of subjects and levels of education, but am most passionate about English, Literature, History, Writing in the Disciplines, Standardized Tests, Personal Statements, and College Applications, as that is my area of expertise. As a teacher and tutor for over 20 years, I am a firm believer that anyone can learn, anyone can write, and anyone can be successful. I recognize that students or clients have prior experiences and knowledge that is unique to them and should be honored. Teaching and tutoring is one of my primary passions in life. I have been fortunate to work with a wide range of students with varied needs and strengths and have found great joy in collaborating, exploring, and learning together. I am passionate about helping students and clients meet their own personal, academic, and professional goals. In my spare time, I enjoy running, gardening, and painting. I am a graduate of Wayne State University. My passions in my academic career included literature, phonetics and linguistics, and grammar in both the English and Spanish languages. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English and Spanish. During my time as a student, I volunteered as a tutor of ESL to adults in the 1st and 2nd levels. I was able to help my students grasp English more fully by approaching lessons with an understanding of how difficult it is to learn a new language. I would provide new examples or ways to memorize. For students struggling with pronunciation, I was able to help with my background in phonetics in both English and Spanish. I have also tutored ESL in an elementary school setting. I enjoyed finding fun stories to challenge my students, but in a subject they were interested in. I would try to find engaging forms of learning that focused on what they were learning in class. I believe in education, and believe that knowledge is power.In my spare time, I enjoy reading, photography, playing the piano, volleyball, board games, and trying to teach myself the guitar.
