I started getting interested in Biology in the 10th or 11th grade. That was when I began to think about the world from a scientific perspective. I studied Biology at Wayne State University for five years on a presidential scholarship, for which I am eternally grateful! I minored in Chemistry after getting interested in the inner workings of organic chemistry. While going to college I earned money by tutoring classes I had already taken. I also offered "supplemental instruction" which were informal classroom question and answer sessions. I worked in a research lab after earning an undergraduate research fellowship and explored Physiology at the School of Medicine. Then went on to study Toxicology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. While there a decision appeared clear between focusing on research or teaching. I like teaching better. I truly enjoy spreading knowledge about Biology and Chemistry and finding fun ways to introduce people to these (often difficult) subjects.

I graduated cum laude with a bachelor's in biochemistry, and have privately tutored for the MCAT, biology, chemistry, and physiology for 4 years. I have helped over 100 students improve their grades, and increased MCAT scores by at least 5-10 points. After covering medical courses in anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, biochemistry, and genetics, I feel confident tutoring those subjects at an undergraduate level, especially for students looking towards a career in the medical field. My experience in medical school gave me a deep understanding of core science subjects. There's so many different ways to learn the same material, and it's my mission to find the way that clicks for each individual. During my experience as a private tutor, I have honed my ability to customize study plans with my students, to fit their needs. For many of my students, I will go through individual questions, and break it down step by step until they feel confident in the material. Furthermore, for exam prep, I also teach and reinforce test taking strategy. My MCAT score was a 37 which corresponds to the 98th percentile. I make sure to review new materials and keep up with changes to help students with the upcoming cycle. As someone who's been through the application process, I know it is rigorous, but not insurmountable. Feel free to contact me for lessons, homework help, or exam preparation, and I will get back to you as soon as possible. My schedule is flexible, especially online, and I am ready to help meet your goals.

I am a graduate of Wayne State University. My passions in my academic career included literature, phonetics and linguistics, and grammar in both the English and Spanish languages. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English and Spanish. During my time as a student, I volunteered as a tutor of ESL to adults in the 1st and 2nd levels. I was able to help my students grasp English more fully by approaching lessons with an understanding of how difficult it is to learn a new language. I would provide new examples or ways to memorize. For students struggling with pronunciation, I was able to help with my background in phonetics in both English and Spanish. I have also tutored ESL in an elementary school setting. I enjoyed finding fun stories to challenge my students, but in a subject they were interested in. I would try to find engaging forms of learning that focused on what they were learning in class. I believe in education, and believe that knowledge is power. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, photography, playing the piano, volleyball, board games, and trying to teach myself the guitar.

We have all had horrible teachers and outstanding teachers. I believe that I am the latter. Over the years as a math tutor and instructor I have learned to be very patient and understanding. Allowing students to communicate their needs to an instructor is very important. But it is also very important that the instructor understands exactly what students need. I allow students to try problems on their own with the use of notes, textbooks, and/or online research first. This allows me to see what exactly they need assistance with. I want students to understand that it is okay to make mistakes because them making a mistake helps me to help better understand a math concept. I believe that my enthusiasm comes naturally because I enjoy teaching Math. This enthusiasm and energy helps to motivate students to do well and to also enjoy math. I also motivate my students by setting high expectations for them. Before any tutoring session begins I explain to them what is expected of them and what I will do to help them meet their expectations and goals. People ask me what makes me most proud. It is not my grades, exam scores, degree, or any personal accomplishment but it is the growth of my students that makes me most proud. I feel that I have completed my job with each struggling student when they are understanding the material better are doing better in math. I also enjoy seeing them be more confident about math.

My passion for teaching started when I was very young and I was diagnosed with dyslexia, a learning disability that causes letters and words to be transposed in my mind. I had to work very hard--my mother used flashcards over a long period--to develop my reading, and eventually I got up to speed enough to be a grade level. I knew then that teaching was a determining factor in what my mother had done for me, and moreover, what my life would eventually be about. I was very young then, and while dyslexia does not go away, I have achieved quite a bit despite it, attaining degrees in English, of all things, and composing lots of music and poetry over the years. My teaching philosophy--pedagogy, the pros call it--is student centered, where I try to engage the student where he/she is at, and then increase the rigor from there, utilizing a conversational and laid back and friendly style. Outside interests include playing jazz/rock fusion guitar and performing music at local open mics, listening to such artists as Miles Davis and Ornette Coleman, even taking the occasional gig or poetry reading, and reading, from fiction to poetry, and from philosophy to biographies.

I earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and continued to complete a Master of Science in Basic Medical Sciences from a well know Medical School in my area. I have been teaching for what seems like, my entire life, starting with tutoring my classmates early in my college educational career. Fast forward 20+ years later and you may find me teaching biology department courses at any of our local colleges/universities, as an adjunct professor or guest instructor. During undergrad, I landed my first paid teaching role as a math tutor at the Math Lab (our tutoring center). Soon after, I was invited to the classroom setting as a teaching assistant for the biology teacher at large public high school in my city. It was then, that I fell in love with teaching! The age range with which I have the most experience is high school and above. The subjects I specialize in are Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, Pathophysiology, Microbiology as well as Nursing School Entrance Exam Prep (HESI, TEAS). I also have expertise in subjects related to health and healthcare provision, such as, Intro to Health and Healthcare Ethics. I can even teach you how to study for other classes! My approach to helping students varies and is dependent on your individual needs. I start by asking a few clarifying questions about your academic situation, so that I can offer more personalized assistance. I teach my students the concepts they need and then follow up with offering resources to help you strengthen your understanding on your own. I have received 10s of letters, email, and small tokens of appreciation from many students over my 20+ years of teaching and tutoring. I look forward to helping you succeed!
