Growing up overseas equipped me with crucial intercultural communication skills. I graduated with honors from Wheaton College (IL) with a B.A. in English, Writing and a Certificate in Early Church History. While studying, I worked as a Writing Consultant where I empowered undergraduate and graduate students to write clearly and persuasively and to read their own work with a critical eye for revision. I believe each student has the capacity to write effectively and I am passionate about providing the skills to assist students to develop their own voice.In addition to Writing, I especially enjoy tutoring Literature, Reading, and ESL/ELL. I'm finishing up my PhD in history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I have an MA in history from Miami University in Ohio, and a BA in history and biblical studies from Wheaton College in Illinois.I have over 100 hours of graduate-level coursework in history, and three semesters of experience teaching history at the University of North Carolina. As a professional historian, I aim to show students that history is so much more than names and datesit's the art of investigating the past for its own sake, and also for the purpose of improving ourselves and our communities.My goal as a tutor is to help students become better readers, writers, and thinkers. These core skills will serve students not only throughout their academic careers, but throughout their lives and in a variety of contexts.Specifically, both in the classroom and in one-on-one tutoring sessions, I emphasize critical thinking and writing. I work with students to help them craft essays that are persuasive, well-organized, grammatically correct, and syntactically effective. I also train students to read critically to extract the main ideas and arguments from any text, whether it's a poem, a novel, or a press release.I moved to Dallas from Moscow in 2013, where I lived while conducting archival research for my doctoral dissertation in Russian history. When I'm not engaged in writing my dissertation, I enjoy yoga, embroidery, and architectural tours of Dallas.
I really like helping students realize that they can get better at math, no matter how they feel about it. I think it is important to listen to what student's think and need, and then work with that to help them get the most out of tutoring sessions. My favorite aspect of working with students as a math tutor is helping them develop their number sense and building their comfort level with arithmetic which helps at all levels of mathematics. Having been a classroom teacher for six years, I have seen a variety of students and learned to work with them based on their specific needs. I studied philosophy as an undergraduate at Wheaton College in the suburbs of Chicago and received my MEd in teaching and learning at the University of Oregon. I have been a full time high school math teacher in Compton, CA, and Roseburg, OR. I have also substitute taught in Phoenix, AZ, and Salem, OR.I recently moved to New York to pursue acting opportunities and have been fortunate to be in a few performances in the city already. I love theatre and music, but I also really enjoy sports. I have six years of experience coaching high school soccer, and spent one year as part of the coaching staff for the Linfield College women's soccer and men's basketball programs.
I am currently working towards a professional degree in occupational therapy at Washington University School of Medicine. I graduated several years ago from Wheaton College with a B.S. in Applied Health Science and a minor in Psychology. I enjoy helping others learn and develop the skills to excel in academia. I graduated from Wheaton College, MA with bachelor degrees of Mathematics and Physics. I discovered my potential of being a tutor in my college. I graduated with my Bachelors in Psychology and Child Development in 2019, and I received my Master of the Arts in Clinical Psychology in August of 2021. I am currently a doctoral student in clinical psychology with an emphasis on child/adolescent mental health. I love working with kids of all ages, and have had several opportunities to work as an individual tutor, helping a third-grade child with homework, and as a teaching assistant during undgrad. Kirsten is a recent graduate of Duke University where she received her Master of Biostatistics, and she has a BS in Mathematics from Wheaton College in Illinois. While earning her master's degree she did research with a professor in statistical genetics, and was able to do internships at QuintilesIMS and the Duke Biostatistics core. During her time at Wheaton College, she was a TA for semesters in mathematics, and collaborated with faculty on a research project in computational epidemiology and was acknowledged in the published article, The Schedule Effect, which looked at how school scheduling can impact infection rates. Although Biostatistics is her passion, Kirsten has been heavily involved in tutoring students in mathematics and statistics. It is fulfilling for her to watch a students face as they understand a mathematical concept for the first time. In her free time, Kirsten enjoys playing basketball, hiking with friends, playing saxophone, and baking.
I am currently an undergraduate student at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. I am pursuing a bachelors degree in elementary education with teaching endorsements in ESL and Mandarin. In high school, I tutored elementary school students in various subjects such as reading, writing, and piano. Oftentimes, I tutored in 2 languages: English and Mandarin because I was living in China. When I entered college, I tutored at an after school homework club at Lowell Elementary School in Wheaton. Most of the students came from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. I was able to learn how to adapt to their learning needs in science, reading, writing, social studies, and spelling. Due to this experience, I decided to attain teacher licensure endorsements in ESL and Mandarin. During this past fall, I teacher aided a fourth grade class at Bower Elementary School. I taught social emotional learning to the whole class. In addition, I worked with students who needed extra assistance in math and reading. These diverse experiences have helped me to develop a passion in tutoring elementary school students primarily in reading and writing. I have especially enjoy sharing and learning cultural experiences from students who come from immigrant and refugee families.I believe that providing widespread educational opportunities for every child is crucial. One of my professors at Wheaton College once said, "Teaching is the profession that makes all things possible." This strongly shows that teaching or tutoring students can navigate them to pursue their passions and talents in ways that suit their experiences and personalities. Without strong support in guiding students, students will not be able to impact the society in unique ways.In my spare time, I enjoy using my passion for languages and diversity to engage in bilingual (English/Mandarin) conversations with friends. I also enjoy reading historical fiction novels and playing classical music on the piano.
