I am currently an undergraduate student at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. I am pursuing a bachelors degree in elementary education with teaching endorsements in ESL and Mandarin. In high school, I tutored elementary school students in various subjects such as reading, writing, and piano. Oftentimes, I tutored in 2 languages: English and Mandarin because I was living in China. When I entered college, I tutored at an after school homework club at Lowell Elementary School in Wheaton. Most of the students came from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. I was able to learn how to adapt to their learning needs in science, reading, writing, social studies, and spelling. Due to this experience, I decided to attain teacher licensure endorsements in ESL and Mandarin. During this past fall, I teacher aided a fourth grade class at Bower Elementary School. I taught social emotional learning to the whole class. In addition, I worked with students who needed extra assistance in math and reading. These diverse experiences have helped me to develop a passion in tutoring elementary school students primarily in reading and writing. I have especially enjoy sharing and learning cultural experiences from students who come from immigrant and refugee families.I believe that providing widespread educational opportunities for every child is crucial. One of my professors at Wheaton College once said, "Teaching is the profession that makes all things possible." This strongly shows that teaching or tutoring students can navigate them to pursue their passions and talents in ways that suit their experiences and personalities. Without strong support in guiding students, students will not be able to impact the society in unique ways.In my spare time, I enjoy using my passion for languages and diversity to engage in bilingual (English/Mandarin) conversations with friends. I also enjoy reading historical fiction novels and playing classical music on the piano.

Hi! I am a teacher/tutor/librarian/educator/writer. I think Varsity Tutors is a great opportunity to reach students interested in furthering their academics. I have been working in the field of education for ten years and focus in the areas of writing, history, math, english, essays, study skills, SAT prep, and more. As a teacher I really strive to understand where each student is coming from in his or her path toward learning. I like to look at the overall program of study, and work to incorporate a student's strengths into some of the areas they are currently working on to improve. By looking at all the skills a student has I believe we can find a way towards achieving the goals of learning. I think that planning is a very important skill as well and I like to work with all of my students with planning. This planning can be used for studying, for homework, for testing, and for any variety of areas that a student may want to bring to focus. I look forward to working with any student on their work. Thanks for taking a look.

I graduated from Wheaton College with a degree in Music History with a minor in Mathematics. I have a track record of excellence in academia overall, and have done well in math courses well beyond calculus. I have tutored mathematics and taught voice lessons on a freelance basis for the past year. I have enjoyed the experience of helping students achieve their goals. I am a native of Port au Prince, Haiti, where I completed all my classical schooling (from grammar school to high school) and some college in French. I immigrated to the U.S. in 2006 to further my studies. When I am not at work or some other engagements, you will find me playing with my two-year old daughter and my six-month old son, or going on a walk with my wife (and the children), or hanging out with friends. When I am alone, you will find my eyes riveted on a TV or computer screen or, better yet, a book. Although I am no philosopher by any stretch of the imagination, I enjoy deep thinking, especially on philosophical matters. That constitutes most of my quiet moments in life.Languages and people are my passion. I speak four living languages and I am proficient in two dead languages. Few sights bring me more joy than seeing a person learn and grow. I hold a MA in Biblical Exegesis (Ancient Greek and Hebrew Interpretation) from Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL and a BA is Pastoral Ministry from Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, IL.I believe every person can learn any language he or she desires. Therefore, I tutor with one conviction--what stands between a student and his or her target language is a tutor who listens and taps into the student's dominant learning style. Because (in my view) motivation and passion drive learning, rather than focusing on weaknesses, I emphasize the student's strengths. I have seen students who were struggling in learning French obtain an A at the end of the same semester. I have also helped others gain a passion for the language while showing slow but steady improvement in learning it.No matter where you stand in your learning journey, it is my pleasure and honor to serve as your guide and ensure that you reach your goal.

Hey! I am a fellow student just like you! Right now, I am attending Wheaton College, but to give you a little more information about my background, I was born and raised in South Korea and attended an International IB school in the city of Daejeon. Going to this international school, I learned the importance of making friendships and strong relationships. I love getting to know more people as there are just so many people that can be my friend in the world! I love helping students like you because I too, had tutors growing up. It was so nice to have someone who was a mentor, a teacher, but also a friend. I want to be this person for you. I hope to guide you and help you in ways that I may have a little more experience and knowledge in. I also hope to learn more from YOU and am very excited for the things that you will be able to teach me! Growing up, I also went to a lot of camps around the country. I was able to make great friends that I would have never been able to make else whereas the camp is a great time and provides the space for friends to become intimate and vulnerable. I was most recently a counselor for elementary and middle schools (5~8th graders) for 10 weeks consecutively!Since I grew up in South Korea, I am fluent in both Korean and English. While attending the IB international School (TCIS), I was also able to take three years of IB Spanish! I am a very bubbly person who is also down to help a friend out wherever and whenever. I believe that two brains put together are better than just one, so let me help you! Some things that I enjoy outside of academics and in my free time are; Jesus, basketball, volleyball, spikeball, waterpolo, working out, watching Netflix, hanging out with friends and EATING

As a college student, I deeply appreciated the professors who fostered lively discussion of literature, used questions to make me think and write more clearly, and made heady concepts accessible through well-chosen metaphors and stories. These are practices I seek to emulate as a tutor. My English major has trained me to read and write well. I love to tell stories and introduce others to the captivating or thought-provoking books I find. My experience as a peer mentor in college trained me to use questions to help students clarify their understanding of difficult theoretical or philosophical concepts. I value helping students work out the answer for themselves. Im animated in my study tactics, employing charades, word games and silly stories alongside careful summary and review to help concepts stick. As a writer, I read other peoples creative work with an eye both for grammar and story. I look for the driving questions of a piece, highlight the areas of greatest curiosity, and call attention to what is already working well. On the academic side, I help undergrad and grad students edit their papers for grammatical clarity, intellectual focus, and style.Ive worked with children from 3rd-10th grade in a camp setting, and have tutored high school students, college peers and English Language Learners. I've often been complimented on my communication skills and problem-solving creativity, which I use in finding the best way to help each student I tutor to grasp material and retain it, as enjoyably as possible. Learning should be fun! Sometimes that can take some encouragement for a student who is struggling, and encouragement is another one of my gifts which I delight to employ. As far as experience, I have worked as a tutor for four years, back when I was in college. I've also done some training in the business arena. Since I was a teenager, I have worked with children in various capacities including teaching Sunday School. I am an organized, reliable, engaging teacher/tutor with a passion for Spanish and English!I majored in Spanish and Business Economics at Wheaton College (Illinois). Because I have studied Spanish for over 10 years, I know the ins and outs of the grammar for every level, whether that's middle school, high school, or college. I worked as a Spanish tutor my Senior Year of college, during which I aided college-level students with their various questions and doubts in their Spanish classes. After graduating from Wheaton College, I lived in Cusco, Peru for 2 years, which really helped me to implement the grammar I had learned for so long in conversation and in everyday life. Most of all, I just love the Spanish language and any opportunity to be involved with it!I also obtained my TEFL certification from Máximo Nivel in Cusco, Peru. I then worked for 9 months as an ESL teacher, educating Spanish-speaking adults and teenagers, ranging from beginner to advanced levels. I also served as the Assistant Academic Director for 2 months during my time as a teacher there.Language is one of my passions, and I think being passionate about the subject is an essential part of being a teacher/tutor. I love the process of helping students increase their language ability and I love seeing their confidence grow as they learn new elements to Spanish or English. My favorite part about tutoring/teaching is creating an environment where students can realize that learning a language can be very fun!In addition to language, I have a love for tennis, hiking, all things outdoors, salsa dancing (which I picked up in Peru), ping pong, mystery novels, and movies.I would be honored to have the opportunity to walk with you in your Spanish or English education!
