I am Dr. Lily Skots, a passionate educator with a Ph.D. in General Psychology, specializing in Cognition and Instruction from Grand Canyon University. With over five years of teaching experience in elementary education, I have a particular enthusiasm for teaching Russian, English language arts, and math. My approach centers on breaking down complex concepts into manageable parts, using engaging, real-world examples tailored to each student's interests. For instance, I successfully implemented a basketball-themed math game to help third graders master multiplication tables, which transformed learning into a fun and interactive experience. I believe that every child can succeed when lessons are infused with creativity and tailored to their unique learning styles. My dedication to fostering academic growth has been recognized through my contributions to Universal Design Learning strategies and the development of programs that enhance parental engagement in education. I am eager to empower future educators and continue making a positive impact in the classroom.

I currently work as a math tutor at Mathnasium: The Math Learning Center, where I've been for the past year and a half. I've also tutored German privately and had 9 years working in church youth programs. My education has been through American River College and Sierra College, with my current degree being an AS in Mathematics for Transfer.I love to be curious about everything and to spark curiosity in others through teaching. My goal is not just to have you understand something, but to be able to have fun with it, be able to sit down, play around with the pieces, and by doing that learn something new about it. Learning is exploring: as a tutor I see myself as a guide, my job is to get you excited about the topic so that you begin to ask questions and piece together the picture yourself. My interests include board games, video games, science fiction/fantasy, fiction writing, language, ballroom dance, and most anything having to do with science.
I have been a teacher for over 25 years. I have taught students from kindergarten to 8th grade. I have 2 teenagers and 2 cats at home. I believe everyone can learn, it is just the finding the right strategy. I have a bachelor's degree in Psychology and two master's degrees; one in Elementary Education and one in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on ELL. I also have my gifted endorsement. I want to give students the opportunity and the skills to excel. I love math and science! I want to show you the fun that can be had with it.
I am currently working as a tutor in Computer Science and Mathematics at American River College. I am also a father of two, with one on the way!
I am a Native Spanish speaker, and will get my Spanish Teaching Certification on May of 2013. The certification will be from kindergarten to 12th grade. I also work as a translator.I love teaching my language in a very active way. I really believe every person has a particular method to learn. It is up to the teacher to discover it, and to incentive the learning process using puzzles, games, songs, etc. in the target language. In my free time, I enjoyed listening to music, cooking, and playing with my son.
