I am a dedicated teacher from New York City currently located in Spain. I received my MST in Childhood General and Childhood Special Education. In addition to engaging in private tutoring, I have also worked in private schools in the Manhattan area.I encourage my students to develop their questioning skills and take control of their learning. I am an endlessly curious person who genuinely enjoys learning and teaching. My favorite part about tutoring is the chance to meet new and interesting people and share in the process of learning and understanding. The subjects I am most passionate about are music, ELL/ESL, culture and language learning in general.Music is a big part of my life - I am a violinist, music teacher and performer. I also enjoy traveling and getting to know other cultures and their languages. I lived in Beijing, China for 4 years and also in Quito, Ecuador for 4 years and learned to speak both Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.During my time in China, I tutored many students in English and developed a real respect for the difficulties of learning this language! I have a PhD in Psychological and Brain Sciences from Johns Hopkins University and a BA in Psychology with a minor in History from Barnard College. I have experience teaching and tutoring undergraduate students and have volunteered as a high school math tutor. I have a strong interest in most academic subjects but I particularly enjoy tutoring math. I've made extensive use of statistics as part of my research on vision and attention so I'm in a good position to talk about how certain concepts are used in the real world. I'm also a huge bookworm and offer SAT Critical Reading prep as well as general tutoring for writing. My hobby is creative writing and I'm currently writing up parts of my dissertation for publication, so I can help with writing from literary analysis to history research papers to the writing aspect of lab reports. When I'm not reading or writing, I'm playing the hammered dulcimer and teaching myself to code in new languages.When a student is struggling I'm always on the lookout for issues that don't have to do with the specific subject matter, such as test anxiety, a lack of organization, of a belief that the subject matter will not be useful later in life. When it comes to the actual material, I believe that there is almost always more than one way to approach a problem and that students should figure out what works best for them. I've studied learning and memory extensively, so I'm always ready to offer up advice. Not everyone learns the same way, and that's fine! While it's ideal for students to gain a deep understanding of the material, when it comes to standardized and multiple choice tests, test-taking strategies make a huge difference. I've used these strategies very successfully in the past.

My journey through science and teaching has ignited my passion for tutoring math and science. With a B.A. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Barnard and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences underway at Rutgers, I've developed a strong grasp of these subjects. Tutoring students in Algebra through Calculus III at Columbia University and leading SAT math classes for students from low-income backgrounds showed me how impactful good instruction can be. It was amazing to see students grasp tricky concepts and gain confidence in their abilities. I am in the process of applying to medical schools with aspirations to matriculate in 2021. Though I am a Massachusetts native, I now reside in Santa Fe, New Mexico where, among other pursuits, I am exploring pottery.
