In nonfiction, the reader explores the thesis and topic to assess their truth or flaws. Analysis of every part of the work clarifies its essence. In poetry there is delight in imagery, diction, form and structure. In all genres, knowing about the period, background, and passions of an author gives entrance into new worlds for a reader.MethodsMany talents define an effective tutor. My teaching approach stimulates curiosity and imagination as well as problem solving strategies and awareness of relevant resources. I’m attuned to students’ personalities, concerns, and learning modes and relate subjects they study to their own experiences. Understanding can deepen with personal identification or ability to visualize, based on prior knowledge and past accomplishment. I am an endlessly curious person who genuinely enjoys learning and teaching. Instead of boring memorization, I like to look for patterns and think of creative approaches to study subjects that can otherwise be very frustrating. I believe the key to education is to promote the underlying understanding of the concepts. Once a topic is understood, the application of the numbers comes easily. People don't really hate math; they hate feeling uncomfortable with it.

I have a PhD in Psychological and Brain Sciences from Johns Hopkins University and a BA in Psychology with a minor in History from Barnard College. My hobby is creative writing and I'm currently writing up parts of my dissertation for publication, so I can help with writing from literary analysis to history research papers to the writing aspect of lab reports. When I'm not reading or writing, I'm playing the hammered dulcimer and teaching myself to code in new languages.When a student is struggling I'm always on the lookout for issues that don't have to do with the specific subject matter, such as test anxiety, a lack of organization, of a belief that the subject matter will not be useful later in life. When it comes to the actual material, I believe that there is almost always more than one way to approach a problem and that students should figure out what works best for them. I've studied learning and memory extensively, so I'm always ready to offer up advice. Not everyone learns the same way, and that's fine! While it's ideal for students to gain a deep understanding of the material, when it comes to standardized and multiple choice tests, test-taking strategies make a huge difference. I've used these strategies very successfully in the past.

I am a rising senior at Barnard College of Columbia University, studying both Music, and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. During my time at Barnard, I have been giving private voice lessons and private music lessons (basic music theory and ear training) to students between the ages of 8-18. In high school, I peer-tutored students in Algebra I, Pre-Algebra, History, and essay-writing, my teaching/tutoring; my experiences are both versatile and extensive. Though I have experience teaching a wide range of subjects, I thoroughly enjoy tutoring students in math.
