Nice to meet you! My name is Kourtney and I'm excited to be your music tutor whether it's for music theory or learning an instrument. I believe in bringing humor, positivity, and reassurance into my tutoring/teaching because learning music can seem to be a bit strenuous at times. But all it takes is a positive vibe and patience, and then music is fun to learn! I professionally tutored students in Music theory since 2020 and I've been teaching flute for since 2023... In terms of taking the AP Music Theory Exam, I scored a 4 when I took the test so I'm confident in helping students score high on their upcoming exams :)

I have two Master's degrees in Education: (1) Teachers College Columbia University (Master of Education - Education Leadership); (2) Montclair State University (Master of Arts in Teaching). I have been teaching middle school mathematics and tutoring for my school's After School Youth Development Program for the past nine years. I also started my own after school program focusing on incorporating online resources for mathematics instruction. During my tenure, I increased my school's proficiency rate on the NJ ASK, New Jersey's end-of-year standardized assessment, by over 33 percent. In 2011, I was asked to lead the implementation of our new Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) program by Project Lead the Way, which is one of the leading providers of STEM education curricular programs in the country. In addition to teaching, I served as a member of the Connections to Algebraic Thinking Focus Group for my district. Our group was tasked with adjusting the middle school curriculum to better prepare students for the study of Algebra. I also completed the Emerging Leaders Program offered by the national nonprofit organization, New Leaders. I believe in working with the students to define the goals important in their music and education. My experience both as a professional player and as an owner of a record label has awarded me the opportunity to understand the music industry in great detail. In teaching I have students from begginers to professional adults. I listen to what my students are interested in learning and proceed to give them the best advice and methods for them to accomplish their goals. With saxophone students you can tune somewhat with the mouthpiece but I teach Joe Allards approach where the saxophone is harmonically organized.
I received my education from Berklee College of Music, majoring in Contemporary Writing and Production. I currently tutor for the following subjects; violin, viola, piano, classical music theory, jazz theory, improvisation, composition/arranging and Japanese. I did my extra credit in high school teaching G5 band kids, and I was also hired from the college to tutor on some of these subjects (music theory and Japanese) as well, so I have 10+ years of experience teaching. I enjoy working with students of all ages and levels, and I grew up in 4 different countries so I have worked with people from different countries as well. I try to get the big picture during my first lesson and plan a rough class plan that works best for the student, so I do not have a set materials/go-to plan, after all, each student has different goals and learning curves and a good instructor is able to adjust accordingly. I like to be surprised by how much the students grow and that is what I strive to achieve through my lessons. Other than that, I love to cook. If you need any Japanese food recipes, I have tons of those to give you so please let me know. :)
I graduated in May 2020 at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Professional Music, with concentrations in Performance and Music Business. Prior to my experience at Berklee, I received my Associates degree in Music Education at Miami-Dade College. During my college experiences, I have worked in a daycare center for two years, where I took care of children ages 0-12. During my time there, I used to tutor some of the kids in reading and math. I also tutored college students in basic music theory and sight singing. I have also had experience helping struggling elementary school students prepare for a standardized test called the FCAT back in the day. I am very passionate in creating a fun learning environment for children to truly succeed in. In my spare time, I enjoy writing and producing music, golfing, and kickboxing.
I am a native of Canfield, a small town in Northeast Ohio. My passion for music developed at a very young age when my mother, father, grandparents and older cousins listened to it constantly. They each preferred different genres, so I heard a vast repertoire. In middle and high school, I started taking lessons for voice, trombone, guitar and piano. I was in wind ensemble, concert band, advanced choir, concert choir, solo and ensemble, school musicals and cross country. The reason why I was so involved was because the teachers were outstanding. They captured my attention and allowed me to really enjoy what I was doing while learning. I decided that I wanted to be a teacher because of them! When I graduated from high school, I went to Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. It is a small, private college, so I was able to participate in too many activities to list. I received my undergraduate degree in music education, graduating Magna Cum Laude. When I graduated, I decided it was time to move somewhere with a warm winter. I had visited Arizona before and my favorite baseball team, the Cleveland Indians, play Spring Training games in Goodyear. So, I knew it would be a good place to go and have been teaching ever since. I taught in Casa Grande, then the West Valley for several years. Since the 2016-2017 school year, I have been at Paradise Valley schools teaching at Desert Cove Elementary, Shea Middle and Shadow Mountain High. While teaching, I have earned my Master's degree in music education at Arizona State University, specializing in teaching music with incorporation of technology. My credentials for Ableton Live and Pro Tools digital audio workstation softwares are from the Berklee School of Music. I have been both a certified Apple Teacher and Makey Makey Ambassador since 2016. I am also part of the Phoenix Ableton Live Users Group.
I have been working as a Spanish-English translator for 18 years and have been tutoring off and on since 2009. I spent years living in several countries in South America and the Caribbean, as well as Spain. I really enjoy helping students with their language goals and seeing them progress in their ability to express themselves and communicate with others. It's a very exciting journey. I have a passion for grammar and finding different ways to approach and explain things to help students understand according to their strengths. When I'm not working as a translator/interpreter or tutor, you can find me practicing, performing, or composing music, or maybe just relaxing in a forest or on a beach somewhere.
