I hold an engineering degree specializing in both quantum engineering and mechanical engineering. I have extensive experience mentoring students in subjects including computer science, physics, robotics, and mathematics. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Oregon and graduated with departmental honors in 2009 with a bachelor of science in geological sciences. I completed an honors thesis on post-glacial fluvial incision in the central southern Alps of New Zealand, which incorporated field work conducted during my study abroad experience. Shortly after graduating I was hired as a geologist by a company trying to develop low temperature geothermal resources in Texas, but the company was unable to secure funding so I started working at the Bureau of Economic Geology in Austin, Texas. In the winter of 2012 I was accepted at the Colorado School of Mines and began working towards my Masters degree in June of 2012, which focused on characterizing the water chemistry variability in 20 perennial tributaries to the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. I graduate with a MS in May of 2014, and have since transitioned back to Oregon. I have a strong background in earth sciences, chemistry, math, and physics and would love to have the opportunity to assist students in these areas. I am passionate about applied science and believe that it is extremely beneficial for young students to learn this material with context, because without any context these subjects can seem like a waste of time and not worth the effort to learn. I enjoy physical activity, mostly through hiking, running, or playing soccer. I have gone on several long backpacking treks along the Pacific Crest Trail in the Sierras and around South Lake Tahoe. My biggest hiking trip was 180 miles along the John Muir Trail from Yosemite National Park to Bishop Pass over 10 days. I have two dogs, a beautiful wife, and a new baby girl.
My name is Zach Polonsky, and I am a junior at Colorado School of Mines, studying Engineering Physics. As a physics major, I know the importance of understanding the fundamentals of a subject before trying to focus on specifics, especially in math and science. I try to have a very flexible teaching style, as I know not everybody learns in the same way, and I will always come prepared to teach a subject in multiple ways depending on the student's way of learning. Originally from Houston, Texas, I attend the Colorado School of Mines, and am studying Petroleum Engineering with a minor in Economics and Business. In the past, I have tutored various math subjects and math SAT test prep. These subjects continue to be my favorites as I enjoy teaching students to solve math puzzles. I am a graduate of Kent State University (B.S, Geology), the Colorado School of Mines (M.S., Geophysics), and Boston University (Ph.D, Geology). I spent the major part of my professional life working in the fields of geology and geophysics, but ended my career teaching, including three years teaching math and science at the 5th-8th grade levels, and eight years teaching Algebra I, Algebra II, Pre-calculus and AP Calculus at a College Preparatory High School. I enjoy both teaching and tutoring, since I found that teaching others is only possible if you truly understand something yourself. I have also found that most students fear math because they have convinced themselves they are incapable of ever understanding it: convincing them that it is possible to learn the math seems to be almost more important than actually teaching the math. I always struggled with math myself: I like to say if I could learn it, anyone can.When not otherwise engaged, I like to walk, occasionally ride my bike, and try to keep up with reading.
I am a current student at the Colorado School of Mines, studying to double major in Applied Mathematics and Engineering Physics. I have been tutoring students professionally for one year, but also through my schools for 5 years now. I tutor most kinds of Math and Science, and love doing so; being able to help spread understanding of a difficult concept never fails to bring me joy. As a current student, I understand how lecturing is often not the most effective (or interesting) way to learn, so I like to be very interactive and ask a lot of questions in my teaching, almost like a conversation between the student and myself.
