Before I began student teaching at P.S 149Q, I had doubts about teaching full-time. Not because I didn't like teaching, but because I doubted how effective I would be as an educator. Teachers' whom I've met throughout my journey had always described their jobs as a battlefield, and either ended their days' in victory or defeat. I've seen more defeated teachers than I want to admit, and could not help but feel insecure about my own abilities to make a difference. My mom said once that teaching was like performing surgery, explaining that I had the potential to shape a child's life. As I looked into my students' eyes during my first day of student teaching, I remembered her words of wisdom, and asked myself, "Can I do that?"I found the answer to that question midway through my student teaching. A student of mine was struggling immensely. My CT and I both knew he needed extensive one-on-one guidance; he seemed aware of that too. As I took him to the back of the room to help him with his math assignment, he had a dejected look on his face. I smiled at him and attempted to make him laugh, to no avail. His shame was like a leak, and it was bleeding from his body. Before I had a chance to say anything, he muttered, "I can't do this. I'm not learning." It wasn't said with heat, only miserable acceptance. I felt it then- a spark of defiance coursing through my body, and I knew that I couldn't let him continue believing that about himself. I turned his chair to face me, and I took his hands in mine. "Anthony," I said, "you have the ability to learn just like everyone else." He shook his head in disagreement. I nodded in return, smiling confidently. "Yes, you can," I continued, "your brain just learns differently from us." He looked at me then, and even though doubt still clouded his eyes, I also saw a glimmer of hope. "Common, lets work together to figure these questions out," I whispered enthusiastically.One period later, my desk indeed looked like a battlefield- manipulatives and eraser bits covered my entire desk; I was mentally exhausted. But the worksheet was complete, and Anthony was smiling a million dollar smile. "You did it, Anthony!" I said. He nodded and laughed giddily, clapping his hands. My heart burst with the joy and satisfaction of being able to restore Anthony's confidence, of giving him the hope to march onwards in his struggle to learn. That day I learned what teaching was all about- giving students the confidence that they can learn. Anthony didn't know this, but he also helped me realize that I wanted to continue doing that as an educator. While I finished student teaching and am still nervous, I am surer than ever that I picked the right career for myself. Anthony and I won that battle, and I anticipate many more victories to come.

While going to college I always had an interest in science and math. I enjoy imparting the Math and science knowledge to students who did not understand the subject as well as I did. My love for English began in my childhood reading Tony Hillerman, R.L. Stine, and Mary Higgins Clark. At the High School of Fashion Industries, my English class read Macbeth - "You should be women, and yet your beards forbid me to interpret that you are so..." I'm a 25 year old based in NYC. I'm currently an adjunct instructor for the capstone biodesign course for the Master's in Translational Medicine graduate program at the City College of New York. Out of these I would say I enjoy teaching Physics because it fills a void of conceptual understanding that is often lost in years of rigorous education. This subject is applicable to the real world -- it's much harder to ask the question, "When will we ever need this" when physics is used to solve everyday problems and is directly applicable to the world around us.My teaching philosophy is simple. I put myself in the place of the student. I would not want to be given false information -- I want to understand the core concepts and understand how to solve problems without headache. This means that as a tutor I don't like to disappoint. I start by explaining core concepts that tie into many different types of problems. Understanding core concepts is the key to success, so that's where I like to start. I don't like shortcuts to problems because the same problems could have a slightly different variation, so the same shortcut used before may not work which is why understanding general concepts can help solve a problem even if the answer isn't clear at first. Conceptually understanding material is very important because it gives us intuition and general problem solving skills that carry over into other areas. If the student understands these concepts, I go onto practice problems and many variations of them to test their understanding of these concepts.However, I will most likely use the problems and work provided by the students specific teacher/class because every teacher teaches a different way, and the work given by a specific teacher may not be exactly the same as another teacher.There are of course times where I've forgotten concepts or new concepts I've never seen are brought up. In these cases, both I and the student benefit. I will have to relearn the material and this is when explaining it becomes much more natural. Starting at the same base point as the student makes it so that we are both involved in solving the problem and therefore both learn.Besides school related areas some of my hobbies are weightlifting, playing guitar, and video games. I've been weightlifting for around 4 years now, and have been constantly working on my personal health and image ever since. I am dedicated to this hobby -- going to the gym around 3-4 times a week, and follow a strength training program. I have learned plenty about physical health and the proper way to stay active, get stronger, and push yourself without getting injured.I played electric guitar for 4 years in high school and recently started playing again on and off. That year, I entered the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, and joined the inaugural class as one of three PhD students of the new medical school.My dissertation project interrogated pre-clinical sex differences in the metabolic neural patterns associated with opioid pain management using18-fludeoxyglucose (18FDG) and micro positron emission tomography (MicroPET). I was able to show that distinct metabolic patterns of pain were sex-specific, and confirmed that an animal model could be useful in revealing distinct metabolic indicators of opioid withdrawal and improve the efficacy of therapeutic intervention.As a Research Scientist at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, I oversee operations of the MicroPET imaging facility as part of the Center for Neurosciences. I have recentl studies include studies of the extracellular cold-inducible RNA-binding protein, (CIRP-/-) and wild type (WT) mice, before and after exposure to binge-alcohol levels. By quantifying glucose metabolism with 18FDG and MicroPET, and using brain-mapping analysis of the imaging data, we can determine if CIRP plays a role in alcohol-induced cognitive impairment. I have served as mentor to many undergraduate and some high school students, and very much enjoy sharing my knowledge base with those that enjoy science.

Technology Specialists are trained to couple digital devices and applications with curriculum to facilitate learning transfer and boost student collaboration. While studying for my degree, I completed three hundred hours of student teaching and observation in public, private, elementary and high schools in districts throughout New York City. This experience fortified the ideology that utilizing virtual software diminishes didacticism, encourages student engagement and creates highly interactive learning environments.Prior to attending Teachers College, I obtained a Master of Science degree from Full Sail University, as an Innovation and Entrepreneurship major. This field of study provides students who wish to build start-up companies in the technology field with all the skills required to do so. The culmination of my studies resulted in the construction of a web-based, media company that coalesces viewers from around the world, in order to foster the transfer of socio-cultural awareness.My initial introduction to the classroom occurred upon graduating from the City College of New York. I was offered a permanent position as a third grade assistant teacher at the Ralph Bunch Elementary School in Harlem. There, I assisted students in lesson comprehension by reiterating classroom subject matter in small groups of three to five students. As well, by implementing innovative learning strategies, I helped the lead teacher propel our students well past expectations.As a Varsity Tutor, I am best suited to help elementary and middle school students strengthen their reading, comprehension and writing skills. I have a myriad of fun and interactive, virtual applications at my disposal that are designed to significantly increase students' reading fluency and understanding, as well as their writing ability.

I graduated from CUNY New York City College of Technology with a B. Tech and later went on to receive a Masters in Human Resources and Adult Education. I am passionate about helping people of all ages uncover their own ways of learning. I believe that everyone can learn with the right level of support and care. I have spent the last 20 years coaching, teaching or tutoring people on time management, work management, overcoming procrastination, learning new tools and learning to communicate more effectively. I'm a problem solver by nature, so even if you don't know exactly what you need, I can help you figure that out!

As a bilingual teacher for students with disabilities, I believe that I can make a great impact on their lives by using techniques that can only achieve confidence and create hope in them in order to learn new skills. It is important that students trust and know that educators care about them and can connect with students by learning about their customs and culture. This will allow students to become more comfortable with learning a new language and not give up when mistakes are made.Most of the students that come to my class have multiple disabilities and they do not speak or understand the English language. At times this affects their behavior because they refuse to learn the language either because they are embarrassed for making mistakes or they do not understand the importance of the learning the language for their professional life. As an educator, my responsibility is to connect with them and show them that it is okay to make mistakes because that is how they will learn and achieve success. Teachers need to always improve their teaching techniques and be open to learn from students because what might be work for one student may not work for the other student. It would be an honor to become part of Varsity Tutors.

My teaching interests include reading comprehension, social studies, science. I have created some great test taking strategies for students of all ages and abilities.As a Special Education Teacher I understand the many challenges that a student will face when having difficulty with a particular skill or a subject that they are learning for the first time.I really enjoy seeing my students reach their potential both in and out of the classroom environment.
