Tutoring is something I am incredibly passionate about. I have tutored for over 5 years and I have enjoyed every minute of it. Seeing a tutee finally understand a concept they have been struggling with is deeply rewarding. I also have been able to learn a lot from my tutees over the years. I hope we can learn from each other!

Before I began student teaching at P.S 149Q, I had doubts about teaching full-time. Not because I didn't like teaching, but because I doubted how effective I would be as an educator. Teachers' whom I've met throughout my journey had always described their jobs as a battlefield, and either ended their days' in victory or defeat. I've seen more defeated teachers than I want to admit, and could not help but feel insecure about my own abilities to make a difference. My mom said once that teaching was like performing surgery, explaining that I had the potential to shape a child's life. As I looked into my students' eyes during my first day of student teaching, I remembered her words of wisdom, and asked myself, "Can I do that?"I found the answer to that question midway through my student teaching. A student of mine was struggling immensely. My CT and I both knew he needed extensive one-on-one guidance; he seemed aware of that too. As I took him to the back of the room to help him with his math assignment, he had a dejected look on his face. I smiled at him and attempted to make him laugh, to no avail. His shame was like a leak, and it was bleeding from his body. Before I had a chance to say anything, he muttered, "I can't do this. I'm not learning." It wasn't said with heat, only miserable acceptance. I felt it then- a spark of defiance coursing through my body, and I knew that I couldn't let him continue believing that about himself. I turned his chair to face me, and I took his hands in mine. "Anthony," I said, "you have the ability to learn just like everyone else." He shook his head in disagreement. I nodded in return, smiling confidently. "Yes, you can," I continued, "your brain just learns differently from us." He looked at me then, and even though doubt still clouded his eyes, I also saw a glimmer of hope. "Common, lets work together to figure these questions out," I whispered enthusiastically. One period later, my desk indeed looked like a battlefield- manipulatives and eraser bits covered my entire desk; I was mentally exhausted. But the worksheet was complete, and Anthony was smiling a million dollar smile. "You did it, Anthony!" I said. He nodded and laughed giddily, clapping his hands. My heart burst with the joy and satisfaction of being able to restore Anthony's confidence, of giving him the hope to march onwards in his struggle to learn. That day I learned what teaching was all about- giving students the confidence that they can learn. Anthony didn't know this, but he also helped me realize that I wanted to continue doing that as an educator. While I finished student teaching and am still nervous, I am surer than ever that I picked the right career for myself. Anthony and I won that battle, and I anticipate many more victories to come.

Hi there! My name is Zach. I'm a PhD at Harvard studying German philosophy and classics (Greek and Latin). Next year, I will be starting law school to pursue my professional passion, tax law. I am deeply committed to the language and LSAT skills I've developed and I love to tutor students of all levels in these subjects. I can't imagine a life without teaching. My favorite part of teaching is helping students come to love -- or at least appreciate -- the details that make up complex subject matters. My favorite moment with any student is when the student realizes how fascinating a subject matter is after really mastering all of the "dry" details. When my students start internalizing the LSAT or languages I am teaching them, I know I am doing my job.I graduate summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from CUNY Macaulay Honors College in New York City, and started teaching undergraduate and graduate classes during my last year there. At Harvard, I have earned the Derek Bok Certificate for Excellence in Teaching three separate times. I have taught students as young as 14 and as old as 85.German: I studied abroad in Osnabrck, Lower Saxony and Berlin, where I earned my C2 certificate (near-native proficiency) in German. While in Germany, I took classes, taught in German, on Greek and Latin philology. I have taught beginning, intermediate, and advanced German at both regular and intensive paces at Harvard and CUNY.Greek and Latin: I am standing faculty at the Greek/Latin Institute, a famously intensive classical languages boot camp in New York City. I have taught students from all around the world and at all ages there. I have also taken all of the most advanced Greek and Latin coursework at Harvard.I studied comparative literature (French, Italian, and English) as an undergrad alongside my studies of classics. For my masters degree, I had to pass a three-part exam at Harvard on the history of German literature. My knowledge of literature is broad and deep!I earned a 174 on the LSAT (99th percentile).Ready to get to work and dive into the weeds? Want to know more about what working together would look like? I would love to hear from you.

Whenever someone is struggling with a difficult problem or topic in mathematics, there is a good chance that he or she is not being taught properly. To resolve this, I break down the material and create simple examples. With these simple examples, the student and I work our way back to the "difficult" problem. So many concepts and topics in various math courses can be learned in this way; from my experience, this process works for many students.I am currently a senior pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering at the City College of New York. Here, I have strengthened my skills in Mathematics, as I have taken courses ranging from Calculus 1 to Numerical Methods. Although these courses are highly advanced math courses, they all rely on concepts from preliminary courses such as Algebra and Geometry, which is why I was able to tutor a myriad of math courses when working as a member of the City Tutors.I enjoy the Legend of Zelda, which is a video game series that forces the player to pay attention to patterns and to figure out puzzles given small hints. In my opinion, Mathematics is similar-although a student may practice a group of problems, he or she finds that all of them share the same concepts and patterns.

Hey there! I am a programmer, writer, computer technician, and poet originally from Ghana, West Africa. I'm in my second year of college and pursuing a BS in Computer Science at the City College of New York. I have taken numerous college classes since high school such as Calculus, European History, and Physics. Additionally, I have completed a Data Strucutres and Programming course with a grade in the A range. I have been able to excel in these courses, by using online study tools such as videos and developing effective routines. I understand how frustrating it feels to spend so much time struggling to learn a topic and I also know how applying the right strategies to learning can make all the difference. For example, strategies such as close question analyzation can help students to mentally digest complex problems and help them assess the tools they can use to solve them.I look forward to helping all students to achieve more than they imagined and to develop the cognitive skills needed to succeed in the face of new challenges. Since my second year in high school, I have always searched out for opportunities to help others succeed in their courses. In my second year, I joined a club that assisted middle school students in preparing for their state exams. By means of persistence and effective studying techniques and continual practice, I assisted students to successfully complete both their Math and English state exams. Most recently, in 2019, I participated in a STEM summer program where I assisted middle school students to apply basic engineering principles such as prototyping to build various cardboard structures powered by Arduino circuit boards. I tirelessly worked to help all of them complete their projects and patiently worked with the needs of each student Furthermore, I assisted them in improving their critical thinking and problem-solving skills in order to effectively analyze problems and develop solutions to problems that they would encounter. I encouraged them to use the plethora of resources that are on the Internet to increase their knowledge. All these tactics enabled all 15 students I worked with to successfully demo their final projects.Currently, I am utilizing online resources to communicate with and assist students in math subjects such as Algebra and Calculus in programming languages such as C++ and even Middle School subjects. The students I work with have been able to successfully complete homework assignments and prepare for exams. I give each student an opportunity to assess their own knowledge first and then assist them, by means of questions and reasoning, to improve and master their coursework and gain skills. Helping students to successfully master concepts in their courses is certainly my top priority. I will work vigorously and effectively to help the students I tutor to achieve their highest However, this is not my only goal. I want to empower all my students to use all the tools and resources that are at their disposal to excel in whatever endeavor they take on. For example, when I work with a student on a problem I will not only help them understand and solve the problem at hand but I will teach them the techniques and strategies to solve similar problems, strategies such as problem deconstruction and examination. Truly, I want my students not only to reach for the stars but to get there and strive even farther.

I am currently a Substitute Teacher mainly in secondaryschool settings for a wide variety of subjects (ranging from Robotics to Art).I really enjoy tutoring English Language Arts, Math and Science because students are typically most challenged by these subjects. My tutoring style is differentiated and aligned with the students learning style and interests. In my pedagogical experience, I have found project-based teaching methodologies to be most effective.I believe that these methods are successful with students because it customizes instruction. Once students can directly filter instruction through their own ambition, application follows and skills are developed as the final result. Student inspiration is the key to engagement and creates the bridge between concept to application in the academic process. My personal interests stem from my first career in the fashion industry. I enjoy studying textiles and exploring color through art, painting and design. These hobbies strongly indicate my own learning style, as a visual learner. Research shows that most learners are visual as well so I always make visual references available, to reinforce the materials that I share. It is a highly effective strategy and my not so secret weapon. I look forward to working with students and supporting their learning. I truly believe that education is a key that unlocks dreams!

As a bilingual teacher for students with disabilities, I believe that I can make a great impact on their lives by using techniques that can only achieve confidence and create hope in them in order to learn new skills. It is important that students trust and know that educators care about them and can connect with students by learning about their customs and culture. This will allow students to become more comfortable with learning a new language and not give up when mistakes are made. Most of the students that come to my class have multiple disabilities and they do not speak or understand the English language. At times this affects their behavior because they refuse to learn the language either because they are embarrassed for making mistakes or they do not understand the importance of the learning the language for their professional life. As an educator, my responsibility is to connect with them and show them that it is okay to make mistakes because that is how they will learn and achieve success. Teachers need to always improve their teaching techniques and be open to learn from students because what might be work for one student may not work for the other student. It would be an honor to become part of Varsity Tutors.

My interest in mathematics dates back to my years in middle school and high school, where I excelled in Mathematics. My mother was a high school math teacher so I was naturally inclined to the love of math. In college I decided to go into a more challenging field other than math, and so I decided to major in computer engineering. I am still in the process of achieving my bachelor's degree in engineering, and I also hope to achieve a minor degree in mathematics, which after my undergraduate level, I will go into graduate level to pursue mathematics. I like to tutor students in various aspect of mathematics because, I just like them, had someone in my early life help me understand that mathematics isn't something to be afraid of but rather an impressing way of expressing one's self and helping solve daily life problems.

So, my multilingual and multicultural background helps me cross such barriers and connect with students better. Due to my vast experience, I’ve developed sophisticated communication techniques and understanding of students’ psychology that helps me pinpoint and help overcome the academic weaknesses with swift precision.I think it’s more important to lead students to the answer rather than simply delivering it. This instills the logic behind the answer and the process, and helps them think independently and analytically. Where appropriate, I employ the Suzuki method and have found that to be very effective.I mostly tutor math, reading, and writing courses. I am very experienced with test preparation subjects such as SSAT/SAT and ACT. Please see my profile for a full list of subjects. In my leisure, I like to dabble in music. I am Biomedical engineering undergraduate in my senior year at City College of New York (CCNY). As a biomedical engineering student, I have expertise in science and mathematic courses. I have an extensive teaching experience of over 8 years. I have tutored physics, chemistry, biology, and maths to college students for three years. I also have experience in tutoring science and mathematics to high school students and lower grades. All my students love me because as a student, I understand the struggle of students and make them feel like I am one of their own. Through real life examples, illustrations, and humor, I make my teaching more intuitive and entertaining for my students. During my college tutoring I had experiences where students said they will take specific courses only if I tutor them those courses.Throughout my tutoring experience, physics has been my most favorite subject. Many college students fear physics which gives me a challenge to make it interesting as well as easy for them. Biology, chemistry, and math are my second favorite subjects because I use them every day in our Cardiovascular Research Lab at CCNY. Like any students, engineering students have to deal with lot of stress on daily basis. To get over these stresses, I watch TV shows, do light workouts, and try a variety of restaurants.

I'm a multi-passionate artist, travel junkie, & life enthusiast capturing my creative journey- one pencil mark, painterly brushstroke, and photo at a time. As a mixed media visual artist from the Bronx, I have always loved exploring the possibilities of different mediums and techniques (e.g. micron black ink pens, charcoal, pastels, magazine strips, oil and watercolor paints). Art has always been my passion since my adoption and experiences in the foster care system. I take ideas hostage by scribbling or sketching them anywhere, let my ideas float around in my noggin and interact with whatever is already brewing for creative flow. In the past few years, I've incorporated collage and altered book making with my existing interests in topics such as nature, personal identity, and African American and Hispanic imagery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who have firsthand experience at City College—they've navigated the same academic environment, courses, and challenges you're facing. These tutors understand City College's specific curriculum, teaching styles, and expectations because they've lived them. This shared background means they can offer insights that go beyond textbook knowledge, helping you develop strategies that actually work within your institution's academic culture.

Alumni tutors bring practical perspective to their teaching. They can show you how concepts apply in real coursework, share which study methods helped them succeed, and guide you through specific classes or instructors you might encounter. Because they've completed the same degree requirements or courses, they understand the progression of material and can help you build a strong foundation in each subject. This personalized guidance, grounded in their own academic success at City College, can significantly improve your understanding and grades.

Tutors from City College excel across the core subjects students need for their major—including mathematics, sciences, writing, engineering, business, social sciences, and liberal arts courses. Because City College offers rigorous programs across these disciplines, alumni tutors have deep knowledge of foundational and upper-level material. They can help with general education requirements, major-specific courses, and exam preparation, whether you're working toward an associate degree or transferring to a four-year program.

City College tutors understand the exact standards and expectations of your institution's courses. They know how professors grade, what types of problems appear on exams, and which concepts tend to be most challenging for students in that program. They can review your assignments using the same rubrics your professors use and tailor explanations to match how City College courses are structured. This institution-specific expertise means less time spent on general explanations and more time on what will actually help you succeed in your classes.

Beyond their City College background, look for tutors with relevant subject-matter expertise—whether that's a strong GPA in your subject, completion of advanced coursework, or professional experience in that field. Ask about their tutoring experience, teaching style, and success helping students with goals similar to yours. Varsity Tutors helps match you with tutors whose qualifications and experience align with your specific needs, so you get personalized instruction from someone who both understands City College and excels in your subject.

Yes. Tutors from City College can help you adjust to the institution's academic standards and expectations, especially if you're working toward completing your degree at City College or transferring to a four-year program. They understand both the strengths of your coursework at City College and how it prepares you for upper-level classes. Whether you need help in a specific subject or with the transition itself, connecting with a tutor who knows City College's programs can make the adjustment smoother.

Personalized tutoring lets you work at your own pace with a tutor who can focus entirely on your learning. Rather than keeping up with a classroom full of students, your tutor can slow down on tough concepts, skip material you already know, and spend extra time on your weak areas. A City College tutor can tailor explanations to your learning style and connect material to examples you care about. This individualized approach, backed by the tutor's institutional knowledge, helps you build confidence and mastery faster than classroom instruction alone.
