Hello everyone! I am a current third year medical student who is pursuing a medical career today thanks to a few very special mentors in my academic life. I'm a 25 year old based in NYC. I'm currently an adjunct instructor for the capstone biodesign course for the Master's in Translational Medicine graduate program at the City College of New York. Whenever someone is struggling with a difficult problem or topic in mathematics, there is a good chance that he or she is not being taught properly. Since I was young I knew that I loved work related to helping others. When I was in high school I spent my lunch periods volunteering and tutoring in a program where I taught students who were between the ages of 14 to 21 reading skills. In college I spent summers working as a job coach, helping adults 18 and over with disabilities find work, and then I would help train them in the positions they received. Before I began student teaching at P.S 149Q, I had doubts about teaching full-time. Not because I didn't like teaching, but because I doubted how effective I would be as an educator. Teachers' whom I've met throughout my journey had always described their jobs as a battlefield, and either ended their days' in victory or defeat. I've seen more defeated teachers than I want to admit, and could not help but feel insecure about my own abilities to make a difference. My mom said once that teaching was like performing surgery, explaining that I had the potential to shape a child's life. As I looked into my students' eyes during my first day of student teaching, I remembered her words of wisdom, and asked myself, "Can I do that?"I found the answer to that question midway through my student teaching. A student of mine was struggling immensely. My CT and I both knew he needed extensive one-on-one guidance; he seemed aware of that too. As I took him to the back of the room to help him with his math assignment, he had a dejected look on his face. I smiled at him and attempted to make him laugh, to no avail. His shame was like a leak, and it was bleeding from his body. Before I had a chance to say anything, he muttered, "I can't do this. I'm not learning." It wasn't said with heat, only miserable acceptance. I felt it then- a spark of defiance coursing through my body, and I knew that I couldn't let him continue believing that about himself. I turned his chair to face me, and I took his hands in mine. "Anthony," I said, "you have the ability to learn just like everyone else." He shook his head in disagreement. I nodded in return, smiling confidently. "Yes, you can," I continued, "your brain just learns differently from us." He looked at me then, and even though doubt still clouded his eyes, I also saw a glimmer of hope. "Common, lets work together to figure these questions out," I whispered enthusiastically.One period later, my desk indeed looked like a battlefield- manipulatives and eraser bits covered my entire desk; I was mentally exhausted. But the worksheet was complete, and Anthony was smiling a million dollar smile. "You did it, Anthony!" I said. He nodded and laughed giddily, clapping his hands. My heart burst with the joy and satisfaction of being able to restore Anthony's confidence, of giving him the hope to march onwards in his struggle to learn. That day I learned what teaching was all about- giving students the confidence that they can learn. Anthony didn't know this, but he also helped me realize that I wanted to continue doing that as an educator. While I finished student teaching and am still nervous, I am surer than ever that I picked the right career for myself. Anthony and I won that battle, and I anticipate many more victories to come.

As a bilingual teacher for students with disabilities, I believe that I can make a great impact on their lives by using techniques that can only achieve confidence and create hope in them in order to learn new skills. It is important that students trust and know that educators care about them and can connect with students by learning about their customs and culture. This will allow students to become more comfortable with learning a new language and not give up when mistakes are made.Most of the students that come to my class have multiple disabilities and they do not speak or understand the English language. At times this affects their behavior because they refuse to learn the language either because they are embarrassed for making mistakes or they do not understand the importance of the learning the language for their professional life. As an educator, my responsibility is to connect with them and show them that it is okay to make mistakes because that is how they will learn and achieve success. Teachers need to always improve their teaching techniques and be open to learn from students because what might be work for one student may not work for the other student. I am currently studying at the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education. This is an accelerated BS/MD program in CUNY City College. I am in my third year and am currently taking medical school courses. After my fifth year in City College, I will be transferring to a participating medical school in the northeast region. I have been a private tutor for the past five years. I have worked with students of all age ranges in many different subjects. Though I am passionate about science, I tutor Math, English and Writing. In college I decided to go into a more challenging field other than math, and so I decided to major in computer engineering. I am still in the process of achieving my bachelor's degree in engineering, and I also hope to achieve a minor degree in mathematics, which after my undergraduate level, I will go into graduate level to pursue mathematics. I graduated from CUNY City College’s Biochemistry program with honors in liberal arts and science research. Growing up, in my opinion, is the most important part of adolescence. I grew up in a household where my mom, a single parent working many hours to make ends meet was out of the house a lot. As the oldest child I learned to start preparing dinner on the days that my mom didnt have time to. I set a good example for my sisters. I enforced rules such as bedtimes and I took the mantle and achieved the responsibility of the leadership position in my mothers absence. I did extracurricular activities and sports such as track & field and afterschool clubs. But towards sophomore year, my involvement in afterschool activities decreased, my mom got a new job with a different schedule that required me to pick up my sisters from school every day.I think that I had to grow up a little earlier than most kids around my age. Not many people that I know have grew up in the same circumstances that I did. I believe that this experience has and is continuing to make me grow into a more mature person with good character and strong leadership skills such as patience, determination, perseverance and self-sacrifice. I learned that there is a time and place for everything, which especially pertains to balancing schoolwork, social life and responsibilities. Many people especially my mother and sisters have too much reliance on me for something like that to be an option. Though my mother is everything for us and we would literally have nothing if it werent for her, there are even times when she says to me, where would we be without you, or youve helped me so much, I cant imagine how we would have had ended up without you.

I'm a multi-passionate artist, travel junkie, & life enthusiast capturing my creative journey- one pencil mark, painterly brushstroke, and photo at a time. As a mixed media visual artist from the Bronx, I have always loved exploring the possibilities of different mediums and techniques (e.g. micron black ink pens, charcoal, pastels, magazine strips, oil and watercolor paints). Art has always been my passion since my adoption and experiences in the foster care system. I take ideas hostage by scribbling or sketching them anywhere, let my ideas float around in my noggin and interact with whatever is already brewing for creative flow. My name is Uzair, I graduated from The City College of New York with honors in Biochemistry. My love for English began in my childhood reading Tony Hillerman, R.L. Stine, and Mary Higgins Clark. At the High School of Fashion Industries, my English class read Macbeth - "You should be women, and yet your beards forbid me to interpret that you are so..." My English teacher, Dr. Bobo, would call me to read with her, and we intertwined together like in a dance. No other student reached my enthusiasm. I am a graduate of Hunter College. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Film and English. I also graduated from City College with an M.S. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). After graduation, I began to teach ESL as an Adjunct Instructor in Canal Street. I got a job as a tutor during my first year in college and have continued to tutor because I realized that I loved tutoring and I like to help people achieve their goals.Over the years while working in various capacities such as a network engineer, a process engineer and an environmental engineer I always tried to devote time to helping students. I tutored high school students, college students and adult learners. I feel a sense of accomplishment when my students do well in the subject area that we are working on together.

Tutoring is something I am incredibly passionate about. I have tutored for over 5 years and I have enjoyed every minute of it. Seeing a tutee finally understand a concept they have been struggling with is deeply rewarding. I also have been able to learn a lot from my tutees over the years. Hi, I am currently a 3rd year Ph.D. student in Mathematical Modeling in NY. I have a B.S in pure mathematics and a M.S in Applied and Computational Math. My friends say that they love my energy. I enjoy what I do or play and those things are mathematics and soccer.

I hold a B.A. in Communication from the College of Mount Saint Vincent and I am completing an M.A. in The Study of the Americas from The City College of New York. I'm passionate about the importance of the liberal arts in education and my tutoring strengths include all areas of English and Spanish, as well as US and Latin American history. I have more than 10 years of teaching experience, including 3 in Mexico, and there's nothing else I'd rather be doing. I currently teach ESOL as an adjunct at Westchester Community College and Borough of Manhattan Community College.
