I am a college English professor in Nashville, TN (and former professional musician) with over 25 years of experience in both areas. I am a recent graduate with masters degree in chemical and biochemical engineering from Rutgers University. After graduation, I have been working as a process engineer in the pharmaceutical industry. Along with being an engineer, I am also a teacher and a mentor. I tutor high school and middle school kids during my free time with mathematics, physics and chemistry online as well as in person. I have approximately 4-5 years of experience as a tutor. I started out teaching first year undergraduate classes to students when I was in undergraduate. Hi! My name is Pearl Sutter and I am a MD & PhD student at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. I graduated from Drew University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts in Neuroscience and Biochemistry.I realized that I have a passion for teaching when I taught basic Hebrew to children in kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade. I quickly understood that each student learns differently, and began to incorporate different learning approaches into my teaching style. I enjoyed this challenge and continue to utilize this approach with all future tutoring.During undergrad I earned by CRLA tutoring certification and tutored in many subjects including neuroscience, biology, scientific writing, essay writing. I also tutored foreign students in English, and lead clinics where I taught fencing to middle and high school students.I am passionate about teaching and helping everyone get an excellent education.In my spare time, I enjoy running, reading, fencing, and spending time with family and friends.I am more than happy to answer any additional questions! As a tutor, I believe that students benefit from a variety of approaches, depending on their backgrounds, current situations and feelings about writing. I believe the most important part of tutoring is empowering the student to feel that he/she is capable of writing and reading well and correcting his/her own errors. I work hard on overcoming the feelings of helplessness and hopelessness that many students experience when faced with writing.I started teaching writing in 1987. Most recently, since 2005, I have taught beginning and advanced comp at Passaic County Community College, advised and tutored students in danger of failing college at Marymount, run the writing component of the CAP program at Pace University (a program which allows students who would not normally be accepted to have a year's probation, when their work needs to be brought up to college level), and taught freshman comp and advanced research classes at York-CUNY. I also piloted and designed a class for below college level writers at Rutgers University Graduate School of Social Work. In private tutoring through Sponsors for Educational Opportunity, I have worked with high school students with issues including ESL, Developmental Delays and emotional barriers.Besides freshman comp, I have also taught advanced research and writing skills classes for all majors, and helped students prepare multi-media and new media presentations. I have worked with populations ranging from pre-GED to graduate level and am extremely flexible in my teaching approach. I have a BA, MA and PhD in English.

I come from a family of seven kids, surrounded by other families who had anywhere from seven to twelve kids! Born to be a babysitter, I often helped most of the kids through homework problems, teaching little ones how to read and proof-reading the papers for the older ones. This early start at what I soon realized was tutoring/teaching led me to attend graduate school at Drew University where I am earning my Masters in Teaching degree with certifications in English and theatre. Before enrolling in the Masters program, I graduated from Drew with a Theatre major, plus two minors in music and arts administration. I enjoy tutoring any subject; I am the type of person that gets happy about little things and as long as I can help a student understand something, I am enjoying the process. Because of that, one day, tutoring writing may be my favorite while another day all I want to do is to keep working on reading comprehension.Besides teaching and getting through my graduate program, I am devoted to playing rugby, making music, singing and playing my ukulele any chance I get. Student personal interests are also just as important to me to know about, in addition to their academic inclinations and abilities. I am excited to incorporate personal interests and aspirations into tutoring sessions so that no matter how tedious work can feel, there is always a bit of interest to keep everyone motivated!

I am a graduate of Drew University, class of 2012. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, with a focus on creative writing and 20th Century American authors as well as a minor in Classics. In college, I worked at the Drew University Writing Center for two years tutoring undergraduate, graduate, and English Second Language (ESL) students. My senior year I was chosen to participate on the Drew University panel at the International Writing Center Association’s (IWCA) annual conference held in Orlando, Florida, where I gave a speech on the adjustments that tutors need to make when tutoring ESL students. I have also worked for the Drew University Summer College Mentor Program where I mentored four inner-city high school students one-on-one and accompanied them as they experienced what college was like for one week. Through my work at the Writing Center, I have experience helping with papers on a wide variety of subjects and have tutored anything from graduate theses papers to introductory level essays. My passion for creative writing drives my tutoring philosophy and with any paper I believe it is paramount that a writer start with the fundamentals. Once a writer knows the foundations of a good paper, then he or she can start to play with the rules and flow of the paper to make the it his or her own. It is critically important to me that the tutee feels, whatever the subject is, the paper is written in their voice. One strategy I use with every tutee is to have them read the paper aloud. This not only helps with sentence structure and syntax but also gives the tutee a chance to hear how their paper sounds. I've found that by doing this over several sessions and different papers, the tutee notices patterns in their own writing that they can choose to keep or adjust and allows them to identify with something in every paper they write, even if it’s something that may not be a creative writing assignment.

I am currently a senior Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major at Drew University. As a premed student, I have extensive experience learning about courses in many disciplines, such as Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, and Math to name a few. Devoting my entire undergraduate career to these fields has allowed me to gain a deep and thorough understanding of those topics and enables me to teach these subjects to students effectively and competently. I truly value the importance of a great teacher/professor/tutor when it comes to learning and engaging students in a way that makes the lesson memorable and easy to understand!My favorite subject is biology and I am especially passionate about molecular biology/genetics because of its clinical relevance. I would describe my teaching style as guided, experiential, and concepts-driven because I believe that subjects are easiest to understand when connections can be made and integrated into previous knowledge or other disciplines. I also like to emphasize a Q&A tutor session where any gaps or misunderstandings can be directly addressed!

I am a graduate of Drew University with a double major in History and Theater. I was awarded Outstanding Student of History and am a member of the History Honors Society.
