Nothing makes me happier than to have a student say they learned more from a tutoring session than they have in school. When I look back, I realize I've been a scientist all of my life. I've instinctively used in some form the tools scientists use to discover the world around them. I think this way, and I want to help my students find these tools for themselves. Before I became a teacher, I worked in medical research for 15 years in some amazing places: Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, Columbia University Medical School, Rockefeller University, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. I've worked in such research fields as Cholesterol metabolism, Diabetes, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis, Asthma, pain management, and chemotherapy. I taught in New York City public schools for 23 years before retiring, and it has been a rewarding experience that has allowed me to work with English language learners, students with special needs, and many students whose area of study were not remotely science directed.

As a former professional educator, I am driven by the belief that every individual has incredible value and ability, just waiting to be realized. It is this conviction that fuels my desire to become a tutor. Guiding students on their academic journey is a fulfilling endeavor with rewards that can extend for generations. Tutoring allows me to cultivate meaningful connections with students, empowering them to overcome obstacles and achieve their full potential. Each tutoring session is an opportunity to inspire curiosity, foster critical thinking, and instill confidence in my students. Whether it's unraveling the mysteries of mathematics, exploring the nuances of literature, or mastering the intricacies of modern business, I am committed to providing personalized guidance tailored to the unique needs of each student. Moreover, tutoring is a two-way street where I continually learn and grow alongside my students. Each interaction presents an opportunity for mutual enrichment, as I am inspired by their curiosity, creativity, and diverse perspectives. Together, we embark on a journey of discovery, where both teacher and student emerge transformed by the exchange of knowledge and ideas.

I graduated from East Texas Baptist University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science in Education, and my teaching certification is for grades 1-8. I've spent most of my classroom time teaching 3rd graders, but I've taught 4th grade, 6th grade, and 7th grade as well, and tutored an even wider range of grades. I've coached Number Sense, Spelling, and Chess Puzzle Solving for UIL competitions, plus SAT Test Prep for the Duke University's Talent Identification Program. I taught many Gifted and Talented students through the years also. Ultimately, I try to help students learn the concept behind the math steps, how it all fits together, why it works, so they can apply it to many situations. Also, I try to go back and fill in gaps they may have missed along the way that are keeping them from grasping current content. I like to use tunes for singing the multiples of numbers, which helps the multiplication facts stick with the students more easily. Those facts are so important for making other concepts of math achievable. I try to help my students understand that it's okay to make mistakes. The important thing is that they need to be willing to try, even if they make mistakes. Sometimes we learn more from our mistakes than we do from all the things we got right. I'm convinced there's a mathematician inside of each one of us. My job is to find a way to reach my students' inner mathematician and help them grow to like math more and more.
