Michelle is an Assistant Director of Admissions at Columbia University, and previously served as Assistant Director of Admissions at Mercer University and Senior Admissions Counselor at Georgia State. From those roles, along with her M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration, she has gained extensive experience in all facets of admissions, including student recruitment and engagement, institutional enrollment strategy, and, of course, applicant evaluation. I have been teaching elementary-age children for the past 22 years. During that time, I have taught students from kindergarten through 5th grade. I began my love for working with children when I started babysitting as a teenager. As I continued my educational career at Georgia Southern University, I received a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education with a Minor in Music. As a child, I always had a love for music. I sang in the church choir as well as played handbells. Starting in 4th grade, I started playing the flute and continued participating in band throughout high school and college. During the summers, I was a camp counselor in an overnight summer camp located in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. I loved it! I got a chance to work with children and enjoy nature at the same time. During that time, I worked in Title 1 Schools that had a lot of ESOL students. I enjoyed working with this population of students, so I got my ESOL Endorsement. Shortly after that, an ESOL teacher retired at my school, so I moved into her position and have been in that position for the past 5 years. After my first year, I wanted to learn more about language learners, so I went back to school and got my master's degree at Georgia State University in Elementary Education with a concentration in Dual Immersion.I am a lifelong learner. Even today, after working all day at school, I come home and watch webinars, take extra classes, and read books to enrich my craft. I strive to find the most engaging, meaningful, and effective activities to help my students learn. Some of the trainings I have participated in are Orton Gillingham, LETRS (Science of Reading), and Kapan (Cooperative Learning).I love to teach all content areas, but what I have found over the years is that using science helps engage students to get them excited about learning. Most children love science experiments and learning about the world around them. Making learning meaningful is important. This obsession with study started in college. I graduated from Georgia Southern University with a degree in English Literature and Philosophy and then went on to the University of Georgia to complete a master's degree in Classical Languages. I also recently finished up a second master's degree from the University of North Carolina, where I focused my studies on second language acquisition and Renaissance literature. I have written my own book-length studies on Cicero's philosophical writings and Sir Thomas More's Utopia. The only thing that is more intellectually rewarding than studying the subjects with which I am obsessed, is sharing them with others. That's an overly elaborate way of suggesting that I love teaching. I have always seized opportunities to teach from the time I was an undergraduate tutor in the Writing Center. My first true teaching position came when I was a graduate student at the University of Georgia: there I tutored and taught philosophy, writing, Latin, and ancient Greek. I then taught Latin in high school for several years before joining the Army. After I completed my term of service, I taught writing and English literature at a local community college. Last year, I even took on the task of homeschooling my eighth-grade son. I teach a number of different subjects in the humanities, but I am most passionate about teaching Latin, ancient Greek, and biblical Hebrew. I also love teaching English Literature. My teaching experience and devotion to the subjects I teach directly benefits my students. I have dealt with hundreds of different students and as many different pedagogical difficulties, especially in Latin and ancient Greek, and so am generally capable of helping the student where she or he most needs it. I have a passion for helping students succeed in life. This passion led to me volunteering my time as a tutor during my undergraduate studies. I helped local high school students prepare for the Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT) by providing them with study methods and offering assistance in math, science, and language arts. My students had a 100% pass rate for the GHSGT and were able to graduate from high school. I also helped students prepare for the ACT and SAT.My assistance is not limited to upper level students. I participated in a program called project FOCUS (Fostering Our Children's Understanding in Science); through this program I taught students in grades K-5 science. I developed lesson plans and projects that helped the students gain interest in science, as well as learn and understand science. I have also tutored students in math, reading, and language arts.When tutoring students, my goal is to understand the level the students are currently at, and how best to help them advance to higher levels.
