Quite simply my passion is literature: I hold two degrees in creative writing (a B.F.A. and an M.A.) and write poetry, fiction, critical essays, and creative non-fiction. While completing my masters from 2012-2014, I tutored students at my university's writing center. It was there that I discovered another of my passions: helping students who are eager to learn. My profoundly meaningful experience as a tutor led me to join Varsity after graduation.I believe in the importance of writing correctly, expressively, and effectively. Being able to express oneself precisely is vital for students of all disciplines, and indeed for all people who are involved in the difficult process of navigating human relationships. Achieving this precision, however, easier said than done. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Georgia Southern University and a Master of Science in Chemistry from Georgia State University. I have experience tutoring a wide range of subjects including middle school math, ACT and SAT test preparation, biology, chemistry, and high school math, but I especially enjoy tutoring in chemistry and biology subjects since I struggled and disliked them when I was in middle and high school but learned to enjoy them while getting my degrees. I have just completed my MA in English Literature at Georgia State University, where I worked as a writing tutor in the Writing Studio and as an instructor for multiple sections of English 1101 and 1102. Darron Hannah received his B.A. in English education from Georgia State University. He went on to earn his Master of Education in leadership and administration, his Educational Specialist degree in curriculum and instruction and his Educational Doctorate degree in education curriculum and instruction from Liberty University. Darron has proceeded to build on his career in education as an education specialist in curriculum and instruction. He prioritizes student engagement and connection and is experienced in teaching students from K-12 to college level. He has been tutoring English, Math, Science, and Social Studies, as well as test prep, for over seven years and uses a student-centered approach, teaching skills and strategies in order to prepare students for the ACT/SAT as well as all other standardized tests. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Science with majors in Mathematics and Physics and I also have an Associate Degree with a major in Business Administration. It is beautiful and logical like a game of chess, and just like in chess, even though there is one right answer (checkmate?), there are often many ways to get there, some faster than others, some easier than others. I have had the pleasure of obtaining two very different degrees, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in creative writing at Emerson College followed directly by a Master of Science in physics at California State University, Northridge. I have run the gamut of both creative and cold, hard, scientific courses and have written both poems and scientific papers about the stars. I make a point of creating scientific graphs that are aesthetically pleasing. One could say both halves of my brain are fairly active.This is a great combination for teaching mathematics. I have tutored both children and adults in everything from fundamentals to precalculus ever since I was in high school, starting with my sister who needed a little help with trigonometry. Now at Georgia State I teach introductory astronomy and physics labs to undergraduates, some of them in STEM majors, many of them not. I try to be as illustrative and flexible as possible when I teach. Most students respond well to visualizations of mathematical concepts, so I start there and always like to use PowerPoints or whiteboards, or at least my expressive hands, to show what equations represent and what they can show us. If students respond well, great, I build to the next concept. If students are not confident, I slow down and try to pinpoint the source of confusion, so I can adjust their perspective and clarify what is really going on. I try to give tips and tricks on how to apply and remember the many mathematical tools students encounter. I show them not just how to solve equations, but also how to graph and manipulate and reshape them, so that someday they can glance at an equation and guess how it will look and what it will do if a given parameter is altered. This is an extremely powerful skill that I believe should be much more strongly emphasized in mathematical education, as early as algebra. This may be why algebra (the beginning of all things, rooted in perfect balance) is my favorite subject to teach.Math is a lot less scary when you understand it better and can in fact start visualizing equations. I had about 12 years teaching experience in middle school and college. One thing that I learned is that teach at student's level, not at my level. People easily forget how they learned when they were young, which cause the gap between a student and a tutor. For me, the most important thing of tutoring is to understand student's issue deeply and lead the student out of his/her mistaken perception of the course and himself/herself.

Currently, I teach college English in the Atlanta area and, in my spare time, I read widely, compose electronic music, exercise, and experiment with vegetarian cuisine in the kitchen.

I began my career in education as a tutor. As a college student at Howard, I woke up early on Saturdays to work with my small group in math. While I can't say that I loved waking up early, I loved working with my kids! After that I was hooked. Helping students feel brilliant was something I had to do every day!So, after I graduated from Howard University with a Bachelors in Business Administration, I received my Masters from Georgia State University in Early Childhood Education. I taught 5th grade math, science and writing. I then transitioned into working with struggling students in small group and coaching teachers. I love giving my teachers strategies to help students feel smart.While coaching teachers is my role, I never stopped tutoring because there's nothing like hearing my kids shout "Ohhhhh!" after doing math they never thought they could handle. I think most kids struggle in math because they think they can't memorize all the steps. I work hard to help students find strategies that make sense to them. When my students see that there are so many ways to get to the answer, they become mathematicians.When I'm not teaching, I am building towers or playing train sets with my toddler! We have a blast. I love singing. I prefer to be curled up with a good book over shopping. I enjoy dinner with friends or my husband. Game nights are my favorite. When the weather warms up, my favorite place to be is the beach or the pool. Love being in the water!I'm looking forward to working with you. Can't wait to help you see how smart you truly are!

I am a college student at Georgia State University with a strong passion for English, language arts, reading, and writing. I believe that strong communication skills open the door to knowledge, new perspectives, and opportunities. As a tutor, I aim to create a supportive and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable learning and asking questions. I focus on patience, clear explanations, and adapting to each student's needs to help them build confidence and improve their skills. I also have experience tutoring younger students in English and enjoy helping them strengthen their reading, writing, and communication abilities.
