I am a high school English teacher who loves to read. I have been teaching high school for twelve years in Houston and Atlanta. I enjoy helping my students with college and scholarship essays and applications. I have helped fifteen of my students earn the Gates scholarship and have helped many others earn POSSE. I teach both AP Lit and AP Lang and love to analyze literature and rhetoric. I was teacher of the year this year and was a Yale National Teaching Fellow in both 2006 and 2008. I have a B.A. from the University of New Mexico in English Literature and an M.Ed. from Georgia State University in English Education. I am certified in secondary education English, ESL, gifted, and special ed. I am an unbelievably passionate teacher and work tirelessly to help every student reach their potential. I occasionally use kooky methods to reach my students (including singing and dancing) but my class is rarely boring and my students are ready for college when they leave me. I have been accused of being obsessed with the literary research paper, and I am guilty as charged. In my free time, I enjoy movies, theatre (especially Shakespeare), exercising, volunteering, and knitting.

I'm a recent Graduate of Georgia State University that has a Bachelors in Spanish/International Business. As a young child, I lived in a predominately Spanish speaking neighborhood. I learned a few words and phrases and that is where my love of that Spanish language and culture began. Since then it have grown to a general interest in various languages around the world but I'm still passionate about Spanish. I believe it's an important language to learn now more than ever and I feel that I can relate to anyone learning the language. I also feel that it is important to empathize with those that I'm teaching and have enthusiasm whenever I teach.

I have experience working with students in both classroom and one-on-one settings. I have taught English Composition, Creative Writing, and African American Literature at Georgia State University and Ball State University, where I worked with students of diverse backgrounds. My experience also includes mentoring students through writing workshops and tutoring sessions, helping them strengthen their analytical skills, refine their writing processes, and build confidence in their abilities. I earned my Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing from Georgia State University and my MA in English from Ball State University and am currently pursuing a PhD in English, with a focus on environmental literature, Southern Cli-Fi, and African American Studies. I tutor in English, Writing, Literature, and College Essay Preparation. Writing is also an invaluable tool for self-reflection and empowerment, and I love guiding students as they refine their voices and ideas.

I've been a teacher and a tutor for years, and I haven't yet come close to settling on a subject. I've taught everything from graduate level economics to elementary school reading to test prep to music composition. I've taught businessmen, teenagers, and a classroom full of 10 year olds. And I've gotten results every time. I strongly believe in the power of personalized education, tailored for the individual student and human being. When I'm not tutoring, I spend most of my time on my two indie rock bands, in which I play guitar and bass and write many of the songs. I also like to take my dog, Mac, on walks around my neighborhood of Grant Park.

I have always been a reflective person, so when it comes to teaching I am one who reflects often, thoughtfully, and intuitively. I believe that when working with student it is essential to help each student become reflective and metacognitive about their own learning. If students are reflective in their learning process they will be able to advocate what they need to continue learning, they will be able to understand how to seek out knowledge, and they will become life-long learners as a result.

I love teaching/tutoring. I first fell in love with teaching when my niece and nephew were young. I would take them on walks and seek to explain to them everything around us. From the telephone lines to the birds in the sky. This love of teaching lead me to obtain my masters degree from Georgia State University. As a graduate student, I taught an introduction to college for college freshmen. Afterwards I did my teaching internship at a high school teaching world history. Upon completion of my program, I accepted a position as a Social Studies teacher at a middle school. All these experiences were very rewarding and now I want to use my knowledge and skills to help tutor students online, especially during these challenging academic times due to Covid-19.Tutoring is very rewarding. I love those "aha" moments when a student finally understands a concept with which they have been struggling. As a teacher, there is nothing to which I look forward to more!As someone with a Masters degree in teaching and an undergraduate degree in Business & History, I have learned what good writing entails. Good writing is both an art and a science. With so much practice, I have learned to master this wonderful gift and hope to help others do the same.As a certified history teacher in Georgia, I know history. I have spent the past 14+ years studying history. This includes in formal classes, studying for the state certification exam, reading books in my spare time, listening to lectures online, and the list goes on. In my spare time, I am usually watching or reading something of history. Please let me know how I can help!

I am a detailed and straightforward person who enjoys calligraphy. My first introduction to anything calligraphy was Japanese Calligraphy. Before I could brush strokes of ink across rice paper, I had to learn how to grind my own ink, hold the brush properly, and learn the order of the strokes. The process was more important than the goal, and mediocrity was not an option. This also describes my tutoring style and how I teach. I believe that learning is a process where order guides yet the target moves. To master math, learning to add makes learning to multiply easier. When challenged, return to the point where you understood, make adjustments, and methodically proceed. This reminds me of my struggles at Georgia State University, where I later received my Bachelor of Arts in English. I missed some stepping stones to writing quality essays. Not knowing what I needed to do to create quality essays, I went back to the basics. I sought help from the best and spent many hours writing and rewriting. Giving up was not an option. Not giving up was how I met my first student, an adult with whom I shared a birthday. Since then, I have worked with students from Pre-K to adults, including homeschoolers, immigrants, and refugees in schools, churches, and courts. I enjoy guiding students through their educational challenges. "I never lose. I either win or learn." Nelson Mandela

My earliest childhood memory is in a classroom in Germany. I started school overseas on an Army base and I remember feeling fascinated with my surroundings. New books, new people, toys, paper and crayons were all within my grasp and sweet faced old woman was standing in front of the room excited to equip me with the knowledge of how to proceed. I loved school and academia since then and gravitated towards the sciences around middle school. I knew from early on that I wanted to become a physician but I also knew that I additionally wanted to continue to pass the information that I learned on. See one, do one, teach one has become of my favorite mantras. In teaching students I believe in using real world applications to excite the audience about the material they are getting ready to learn. I believe the first 10 minutes of every lecture is the most crucial and typically start off with a problem/quiz that will relate to the information of the day to captivate the classroom. Interaction is a key to learning. I attempt to personalize it at every opportunity hoping that students realize that sitting back and passively absorbing knowledge is not an option or a key ingredient in the recipe for success.Another important aspect to teaching is incorporating methods that apply to all different learning styles. Realizing that students are diverse and you are constantly speaking to a mix of auditory, visual or tactile learners is important and should be noted with every lesson plan. The beauty of science is that the topic can be manipulated to accommodate all styles and promote knowledge.Ultimately, my goal is to give someone the same sense of wonder that so many excellent professors have done for me over the years. To quote Socrates "I cannot teach anybody anything. I can only make them think" and hopefully as an adjunct professor that is exactly what I will do.

Learning Spanish from a young age has allowed me to see the world from an entirely new cultural lens and, more importantly, has enabled me to view American or Western culture from an outside point of view. Doing so has made me realize that the United States does not put enough emphasis on learning a second language, specifically Spanish. As a result, we are limited in how we see and interact with the world and other nations.I wish to take my experience studying Spanish and completing a Bachelors of Arts in Spanish to help others explore Hispanic culture by studying the Spanish language. I would concentrate on teaching grammar, with an emphasis on its communicate and conversational application, Spanish conversation, and critically analyze both American and Hispanic cultures as a whole to be able to draw distinctions and gain awareness about their own cultural lens. Furthermore, I wish to draw on my experiences with my TEFL certification, such as creating and carrying out lesson plans about teaching English, towards creating authentic, relevant lesson activities for tutoring Spanish so that they can reinforce and relate to the content they may have gone over in class. Lastly, my experience working in customer service and with children as a chess coach has given me valuable interpersonal skills which I use to be able to connect with students and focus on strengthening the learning strategy that works for them.
