I have been a Language Arts teacher for 15 years, mostly at the middle school level. My BA is in English and I am an avid reader, racing through audio books in particular, since I am a master multi-tasker. I enjoy doing some freelancing editing work on the side as well. I have a special talent for teaching in in multiple modalities and from a variety of perspectives, a skill that most likely comes from my own experience with dyslexia. I love working with young people to help them reach their goals and discover the extent of their talents. In my free time I enjoy riding my bike and spending time with friends, family and my quirky dog, Miinan. I am the director of a middle school theater group as well as directing occasionally at the high school level and I love to get out and experience theater whenever possible. Music, both live performances and whatever is playing on my record player or in my ear buds, is also a huge part of my life.

I first became interested in teaching and tutoring when I was a high school student taking an abundance of AP courses. Though these courses successfully prepared me for my college education, I felt that I could have benefited from tutoring myself. When I entered college, I initially enrolled hoping to pursue a degree in social studies education. However, through my coursework and study, I began to focus more on history and chose to change my major to history and my minor to classics. Throughout this transition, I have never lost my interest in teaching and education. My Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Gustavus Adolphus College has instilled in me a love of learning, skills in critical thinking, composition, writing, editing and much more. These skills, though not the main focus of my major, became the core of understanding for me throughout my education. Upon completion of my degree in May of 2016, I chose to pursue a gap year of service working with Minnesota Reading Corps, a division of AmeriCorps, as an elementary literacy tutor. In this role, I gained training in tutoring and developed skills that have helped me to better understand how to reach students.Beginning in the Fall of 2017, I will be pursuing a masters degree in Museum Studies from John's Hopkins University's Advanced Academic Programs department. Through this degree, I hope one day to become a curator at a history museum. This role would allow me to utilize my love of both history and educating the public.

My name is Daniel Abebaw. I'm an 18-year-old college student, award-winning photographer, and performing musician who believes that creative skills aren't talents you're born with, they're languages you learn. I didn't start out knowing how to read music or compose a shot. I learned by doing, by failing, and by finding mentors who met me where I was. That's exactly the kind of tutor I want to be for you. Whether you're picking up a camera for the first time, learning to hear music differently, or trying to tell a story through digital media, I'll meet you where you are with hands-on guidance from someone who genuinely loves these crafts. My photography received state and national recognition while I was in high school, and so can you. I perform trombone in my college's top jazz ensemble and recently recorded a professional album at Pachyderm Studios with a Grammy-nominated jazz violinist (I also play alto sax, drums, guitar, trumpet, and piano). I've been building creative skills in the real world, and I want to help you do the same.

I am a professional chemist with a Ph.D. from Texas A&M. I have 4 children 16,13,13,11 and since we homeschool I am very involved in their education. Personally, I am very involved in my kids sports and school. I like to run and play competitive sand volleyball.I have lectured and tutored chemistry since graduate school. I am very good at going through problems with students and explaining the material so they can complete the homework faster and remember it well for the exams. I think the strongest case for hiring a tutor is efficiency. If I am there as you work through the problems I make sure you understand how you set up and complete the problem as you do it, while at the same time reinforce the chemistry concepts. Basically, you will spend your time mastering the material vs laboring to figure out how to complete each problem.

My passion for education has been evident my entire life - one doesn't earn three post-graduate degrees without loving learning! But that passion extends to teaching, too, and I love being able to share my education and understanding with others. I am a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, earning a bachelors degree in Communication Studies. I continued in that subject matter at the University of Iowa, where I earned a Master's degree and Ph.D. in Communication Studies, with emphasis in rhetoric, interpersonal communication, and persuasion. I also earned a J.D. at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and am a member of the Minnesota bar. I have been teaching and tutoring for over 15 years. I have tutored in small group and individual settings for students taking the LSAT, GRE and Bar exams. Additionally, I have significant experience teaching college classes, including communication theory, public speaking, interpersonal communication, and research methods. Particularly in cases of test prep (but also as a general guideline), I like to focus on a student's strengths, not weaknesses. I evaluate to see what kind of thinking a student employs and teach them how to identify and answer those questions. Then we look for ways to use those strengths to address other questions and build up expertise from that. I have found that this helps students feel confident about their own intelligence, able to improve in challenging areas, and create a long-term learning strategy.
