I love to teach Spanish and it is a true passion of mine. I am able to tutor basic Spanish up through advanced conversational and honors level Spanish courses. I can speak and teach Castilian Spanish (Spain) and various dialects of South/Central American Spanish. I am able to teach to different learning styles, and can craft lessons as needed for any student. I graduated from Houghton College with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Spanish and International Studies. I also spent time at the University of Granada in Spain at the School of Translation and Interpretation to study Spanish language, literature and culture. Since graduating I have worked for a government agency, and much of this work requires communicating in Spanish and across cultural lines. I am also qualified to teach ESL/ESOL as I have previously tutored both in the US and in Spain. My training in several foreign languages broadens my understanding of the language learning process and has helped me understand learning styles and to craft my session to best assist the learner.

I have a Master's degree in psychology from the University of Central Missouri. I really enjoy reading, spending time with my friends and family, and watching sports. I was a teaching assistant in graduate school twice so I am confident I can be of assistance here, too! I have been tutoring in a variety of subjects with Varsity Tutors for over five years now. I have tutored introductory psychology, statistics, research methods, cognitive psychology, thesis and research paper writing, high school English, and helped students build their study skills. My favorite thing to tutor is psychology as it is my favorite subject. I like to work with the students I am tutoring; not yell at or just point out what they are doing wrong. If I'm your tutor, we're together on this and I am happy to help! Feel free to schedule an appointment with me today!

I am a graduate of Covenant College where I earned a B.A. in English & Music. Following graduation, I worked as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Republic of Georgia. Among other responsibilities while there, I tutored middle and high school students in English and writing as well as teachers in computer literacy and professional skills. After my service, I received an M.Mus. in Music Composition from Houghton College, where I tutored undergraduates in music theory and volunteered at a local high school where I tutored and mentored at-risk teens. I'm currently working on a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of the People, a global online education development initiative.I enjoy tutoring across the spectrum of subjects, though I get most excited about Literature, Writing, and developing an individual's capacity to learn. I seek to personalize each student's educational experience, as I believe that learning happens best when a student is engaged and takes ownership of her/his learning. My hobbies include writing music, writing words, travel, long walks, acquiring degrees, and helping people.

I recently graduated from Houghton College with a B.S. in Biochemistry. While in college I loved the challenging courses and taking more classes than required, and I achieved high As in all Science and Math coursework.I started tutoring in high school and continued tutoring all throughout college for as many courses as possible including Organic Chemistry, General Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Calculus, among others, for both high school and college students. It is incredibly satisfying to see students who were struggling finally succeed. I have a great track record of helping students succeed in the their classes, raising Cs to Bs and Bs to As and increasing MCAT scores as much as 8 points. Along with tutoring I teach MCAT review courses and love engaging students in the long and difficult process. I plan on attending medical school a I am excited and passionate about a career in medicine.Along with academics I love to read for fun and play soccer. I played varsity soccer for four years in high school, and intramural soccer in college. I also love other outdoor activities like swimming and hiking. I am a Giants fan so I like to watch football, mostly the Giants, and play card or board games with friends.

Students should be given the tools they need to have a chance at success in life. This is one of several conclusions I made through my bachelor's studies in biology and ecology at Houghton College. Through an internship and volunteer activities, I found myself drawn toward the teaching side of academic studies. I pursued my passion and became a middle school English and Literature teacher. With experience tutoring an elementary school student with their writing, I found joy in teaching students how to access tools that would help them and bolster their strengths and weakness.Writing, though fun, is only one of my favorite subjects to tutor. I love to tutor biology as it was my first academic passion. I enjoyed my science classes, and I enjoy helping others understand science -and come to at least tolerate biology. Through my experience as a teacher, discovering shared interests and using stepping blocks build toward a better learning experience. In addition, students need to be able to see their improvement, and putting their skills to use is tremendously essential.Currently, I am pursuing both my Master of Education in biology and my certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. There is always room for improvement, and I strive to also push myself forward and keep learning.

I have always loved teaching in almost any setting, but when I started to tutor online over eight years ago, I discovered my greatest passion. It's a joy to work with students individually and to use their strengths and interests to customize lessons "on the spot." My approach is often unique because I have a background in both math/science and English language arts. (For example, if a student loves math but struggles with writing, I can help him or her understand writing rules by using analogies from algebra class--or vice versa!) Also, because I am state certified in both elementary and secondary education (and have extensive experience helping college students prepare for Accuplacer exams in both writing and algebra), I am very flexible and can work with learners in many age ranges. I did my undergraduate work at Houghton College and post-graduate studies at State University of New York College at Buffalo.

I recently graduated from Houghton College, where I majored in physics and mathematics. While I was in college, I worked as a teacher's assistant for various math and physics classes. By working as a teacher's assistant I gained experience in the classroom, in smaller help sessions, through one-on-one tutoring, and also by grading homework assignments. Before college, I worked as a piano teacher throughout high school, as well as tutoring a few students in math. Now I offer tutoring in physics (up to college level) and in middle school, high school and some college level math classes. Introductory physics courses are one of my favorite courses to help students with because there is a steep learning curve, and it is exciting to help a student progress in a subject which they may not have much experience in.My tutoring style greatly depends on the student I am working with. Usually this does not include very much lecturing on my part--instead I like to work through problems with the student. Depending on their confidence level in the subject, I will usually work out an example for them, asking questions along the way, and then prompt them to work one out themselves. Sometimes for physics problems, what can be most helpful for students is to talk through the situation presented in the problem and describe, verbally, concepts such as energy transfer and forces, for example, to help them understand what we are concerned with in the particular problem.Outside of academia, I am interested in living a sustainable, minimal life. I enjoy trying to find ways to reduce wasted resources and energy consumption. I am also a musician--I have played the piano for many years and am currently working on recording some of my compositions.
