After graduating, I worked as a behavior aide in an elementary school helping students in need of extra behavioral support in the classroom and in social situations. I spent twenty-five years building relationships with students; I just happened to teach English. Without that relationship, there is no trust, no confidence, and no inclination to change or grow. Students must have faith in us and believe in our faith in them. Thirty years ago, I left a career in the film business to teach because I needed a career that I felt mattered. One that was important. And working with young people is important. It was the best professional choice I ever made.

Hello! I am an experienced and dedicated math tutor with a passion for helping students succeed in mathematics. With a strong background in the subject and a genuine love for teaching, I am committed to making a positive impact on my students' learning journey.Mathematics has always been a source of fascination for me. Its logic, patterns, and problem-solving nature captivate my mind and drive my curiosity. I find great joy in unraveling complex mathematical concepts and sharing this excitement with others. As a math tutor, my ultimate goal is to inspire my students to develop a similar enthusiasm for the subject.Over the years, I have worked with students of various ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. Each student is unique, and I firmly believe in tailoring my teaching approach to meet their individual needs. I strive to create a supportive and engaging learning environment, where students feel comfortable asking questions, expressing their challenges, and exploring mathematical concepts at their own pace.My teaching philosophy centers around the idea of making math accessible and relatable. I understand that many students find mathematics daunting and overwhelming. Therefore, I focus on breaking down complex ideas into smaller, more manageable steps. I utilize real-life examples and practical applications to demonstrate the relevance of math in everyday situations, making it easier for students to grasp abstract concepts. As a tutor, I aim to instill not only a deep understanding of mathematical concepts but also strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. I encourage my students to approach problems from different angles, think creatively, and develop logical reasoning abilities. By emphasizing the process of problem-solving rather than mere memorization, I empower my students to become independent thinkers and confident mathematicians.Communication is at the heart of my tutoring style. I believe in establishing open and effective lines of communication with my students and their parents. Regular progress updates, feedback sessions, and constructive discussions help me understand the specific areas where students may need additional support. I am patient and empathetic, ensuring that my students feel heard and understood throughout their learning journey.Continual professional development is a priority for me as a math tutor. I actively seek out new teaching methodologies, resources, and technology tools to enhance my instructional techniques. I have been teaching writing and literature courses in English since 1997. I have met many types of students in the classroom--some who love writing, some who hate it, some pursuing degrees in humanities, and others pursuing degrees in the sciences or social sciences. The best way to assist students with English skills, I have found, is to meet with them independently and learn how they think, what interests them, the academic subjects the enjoy, and those with which they struggle. My background also includes tutoring at a college writing center. The most rewarding aspect of the job was meeting with students who arrived feeling uneasy about a particular writing assignment and left feeling confident and prepared to tackle it.

I graduated with honors from Michigan State University in 2006, receiving a BA in History with cognates in Math and Physics. I had the opportunity to travel extensively through western Europe as an undergraduate student, and I participated in a semester-long study abroad program in the United Kingdom. These experiences led me to pursue graduate studies abroad in Ireland, and I received my MA in History from University College, Cork in 2007. While preparing my applications to doctoral programs in the U.S. and Canada, I had the opportunity to work as a long-term substitute teacher, teaching Algebra at an alternative high school in Flint, MI. In the summer of 2008 I was asked by the same high school to stay on for their summer school program, where I taught 6-8th grade math. I took up a graduate scholarship with the Department of History at the University of Toronto the next autumn. I passed my comprehensive exams on schedule in May of 2010, and began the long, arduous, but rewarding process of researching for my dissertation. I have taught at both the secondary and college levels, and I have taught a variety of subjects and skills from math to history, and from critical reading and writing to the basics of footnoting and compiling bibliographies . These teaching opportunities have provided me with considerable experience in planning, organizing and presenting educational programming. They have also given me the opportunity to guide, and to work closely with young scholars and learners from a variety of backgrounds. I firmly believe that the importance of education as well as the key to a successful academic career is the ability to learn 'how to learn'. In other words, rather than simply memorizing and demonstrating content, I believe that recognizing and mastering one's own unique process(es) of learning is the most important outcome of learning. For this reason, I try not only to present learning as a challenging but fun exercise, but also as an exploration of each student's strengths, interests and capabilities. Apart from my continued fascination with all things 'history', I enjoy reading (especially satire), traveling (especially on trains), and watching (but never performing!) stand-up comedy.

I've always loved school and learning. At the core of my teaching philosophy is the idea that anyone can learn anything, so long as the instructor is willing to teach to the student's style of learning. Most subjects came easily to me, but I hit a wall with math in middle school and just never seemed to be able to get it to 'click.' Then, I had a very patient teacher who helped me figure out how I could learn math, and it was like the wall crashed down. I would love to see every teacher have to teach his or her worst subject for a couple of years, in order to figure out how to become a better instructor.

I have two post-secondary degrees and am likely to seek at least one more because the process of learning is so cool.Active learning should also be individual because we are all the result of different families, communities, interests, and goals. I have "learned" something years after first attempting it because I was at a different point in my life or the material was presented differently when it clicked.I want to help those who need assistance actively "learn," not memorize material. I am currently a full-time mathematics professor at a community college, where I teach both online and on-ground classes. Before this position, I worked as a graduate teaching assistant and then a visiting instructor at Michigan State University. I even taught high school mathematics for a year prior to that. When I am teaching or tutoring a student, I always try to abide by the motto: "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." This motto has helped me focus on being a good listener, which I believe has made me a very effective instructor/tutor. When a student says that he/she does not understand a concept, I will often ask him/her a couple follow-up questions in an effort to identify the root cause of his/her misconception. Then the student and I can go to work on clearing up this misconception. In general, my goal is to help students first understand WHY certain mathematical principles work, because then it will be easier for them to learn HOW to apply them appropriately.

BIO As a young person in school, I had a great passion for learning, especially, mathematics to a degree far advanced on my own compared to fellow student peers. In kindergarten, I could add numbers in the millions. Beginning in middle school, I would make it to regional- and, even at one point, state-, level competitions. Just before freshmen year of high school, I taught myself college algebra. During high school, I studied the Calculus BC booklet, took the AP BC test, and scored 5/5, including solving the concluding written question at the end. Finally, as an undergraduate, I was blessed to attain the top academic achievement for all math majors in my class, Co-valedictorian. After attaining a Masters in Applied Math, I changed focus toward a MS in CPS. During these times of graduate school, I taught as a Teaching Assistant in Math, and tutored in the Math Help Room several hours weekly. In my career, I went on to the occupation of web development and programming, which can be seen below. I am almost certain that so many of your beloved students may have the same passion as I did, and, consequently, I would rejoice at the idea to inspire them to similar heights of achievement and joy in the fantastic subjects of mathematics or computer science, subjects which can give them powerful critical thinking skills to enable them to succeed greatly in their lifetime vocation endeavors!
