I am a firm believer in the concept of self-directed learning. To me, learning is not about memorizing facts and numbers (although I do love facts) but about creating your own experience. Learning truly becomes passion when it asks as much from the student as it gives back. My role as a tutor is to be a collaborator. I am here to challenge and help, but I am not here to direct the learning. That must come from the student. I truly believe that this approach leads to more passionate and better students.I am a professional improv coach and performer as well. I feel those skills help me be a better tutor. Flexibility is important in maximizing a students potential. I am also obsessed with historical non-fiction. I can talk history for hours.
Hello, salve, and willkommen! I am a former college instructor who specializes in philosophy, theology, and the history of the classical world. I love dogs, Roman Stoicism, karaoke, and Jane Austen novels (because that Mr. Darcy is such a dream!). My degrees in both English-Writing and Philosophy have helped my students craft essays that are logical, coherent, precise, and eloquent. Never fear, for after a decade of teaching and tutoring, I still have more awesomeness to give!
Upon entering college, I tested into a basic math but was eventually able to obtain a graduate degree in a math intensive subject. The road from basic algebra to advanced mathematics was arduous but it was all made possible over a decade ago with the help of a tutor. It was through tutoring that I discovered my greatest barrier to learning mathematics: a lack of belief in myself. The myth that I did not possess a deep inborn talent required to perform math or science kept me from reaching my potential. Once I let that go, I discovered that even a belated and neglected learner, like I once was, could succeed in math. Math is a craft learned through doggedness and attention. Belief in ones own abilities can only be recognized through exposure and experience. This is what a tutor provides.I developed a large repertoire of math skills and memory tricks while being tutored and eventually decided to pass them along as a tutor myself. I continued to use practical equations, colorful anecdotes, and methods of engaging exploration to assist students as a peer tutor until I completed my masters degree in 2006. I was then promoted to the full time Coordinator of Math and Science tutoring at my previous University, where I excelled in my duties to create and present science and math workshops, and to hire and train a team of successful math and science tutors.I believe in successful tutoring because I am a success story.
I graduated with honors from Millikin University in 2007. There I obtained a Bachelor of the Arts Degree in Secondary Education with a focus on History. Since then I have worked at Wheaton North High School in Wheaton, Illinois. My post graduate work has been focused on obtaining a Learning Behavior Specialist-1 endorsement to expand my professional development. To achieve this goal I have taken classes at North Central College in Naperville along with online courses. I have tutored for over a year with students in Naperville, using a curriculum to reinforce Math, English, and General Knowledge skills. I worked with students through early elementary to secondary levels. My teaching and tutoring style is to work to help students develop their critical thinking and problem solving skills. In addition to this, I also strive to help the students think analytically about major concepts or situations. Working one on one with students is one of the best ways to achieve this. In fact it is my preferred method of teaching. I have developed these beliefs over my career and like a good student, am always evolving philosophy thanks to new experiences.Since I was a child my passion has always been history. I love study of humanity that history allows us and it will be my favorite subject to tutor. The other branches of social science such as government and psychology also interest me. Thanks to my time at Wheaton North I also have experience with Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Basic Geometry, and Biology. Having a background in social science, I am very experienced with preparing essays for papers, projects, and tests; thus I can offer help in preparing multi-paragraph essays. When I'm not teaching I love to write, mainly short stories and a continuing effort to try and produce an actual novel. I wouldn't have begun to love writing like I do if it hadn't been for my love of books. I'm an avid reader. I will not travel anywhere without a book in my backpack or my Kindle. Generally I enjoy the science fiction, military & historical thrillers, along with horror genres. It should also be no surprise I enjoy historical non-fiction. Thanks to my father I became a fan of golf and play on a limited basis. I'm also not ashamed to admit I enjoy video games.I hope you have an idea of my education and background as I look forward to sharing my time with your student.
