Students forget concept they've learned through out the school year during the summer I am a mom. My children just finished elementary school. Their education and the difficulties they have had inspired me to tutor them from kindergarten through the present. Now, I want to help other students to not only improve their grades but also develop a life long love of learning. Every child has an "ah ha" moment when he or she or they understand a concept. I love that moment of discovery and boost in self-esteem. If your are in Elementary School, I can tutor you in Language Arts, Reading and Math. For those in 6-12th grade, I am great resource for Language Arts including grammar, essay writing, term papers, creative writing, speech writing and performing, literary critiques. I can also show you effective ways to study and how to prepare for tests. Did you know that test taking is a skill? I can show you how to answer those tricky multiple choice or true/ false questions. Teachers often want short essay responses on test too. I can help you tackle those as well. I am working toward my professional teaching certificate. I am currently qualified to teach 6-12 grade Social Studies by the Florida Board of Teacher Certification. I earned a B.A. in Psychology from New College of Florida, and I have completed graduate course work in Counselor Education. Learning is more than memorization of facts and figures. My goal is to help students sharpen their critical thinking skills so that they can have the tools they need to make he most out of their education and their professional careers. I am a graduate student at Columbia University currently majoring in South Asian Studies with a focus on history and postcolonial theory. I attended New College of Florida where I received my bachelor's degree in History. I am an aspiring professor and an avid student of all disciplines. My tutoring experience ranges from elementary school to graduate-level work, and I have specialized for the last two years in working with students with learning disabilities. My preferred subjects are history, literature, reading comprehension, and writing, and I can tutor verbal sections for standardized tests including the GRE. My favorite subject, you may have guessed, is history, but I also have a long personal history learning foreign languages, and I feel that this contributes to my skill in teaching English reading comprehension. I've served as a T.A. for a beginner's literature class in the past year, and was a camp counselor at Girls Inc., a stem-focused summer and after school camp for girls K-8. My primary fields are English Literature, Comparative Literature, and History. I have presented at conferences, most recently at Simon Fraser as a member of a panel for their graduate English program. I wrote a thesis last year, passed my baccalaureate exam, and I'm pursuing publication for the project. I am currently working as a freelance writer, with an article due for publication in The New Inquiry next month.

I got my high school diploma from Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, MA; my BA in Fine Arts from New College of Florida (the honors college of Florida's state universities) in Sarasota, Fl; and two masters in the Humanities from Saint John's College in Santa Fe, NM. Both colleges emphasized self-directed learning, collaboration, Socratic seminars, great books, intensive study and writing, and this has informed my own teaching style. I have taught as an English and history teacher in all types of schools: private, public, charter, and online. I have worked as a private tutor for English, drawing, and SAT Prep. I've worked with and tutored all kinds of high school students: ESL, ESS, at-risk, and dual enrollment in community college classes.I have a great passion for my subjects and a strong desire to communicate that to others. I strive to meet students where they are at, getting a sense of their strengths, challenges, and interest in the material so that our time together is as rewarding, interesting, and fun as possible. As a consequence, recalling facts and organizing information, which has to be done, becomes much easier. As a rule of thumb, my lessons begin with Socratic questions and speculative or analogical thinking to develop critical thinking and effective communication skills before going into the factual or technical sides of the subject matter after which students can demonstrate they've mastered the concepts needed to succeed on a test or essay. If a student is earnest, I will always go the extra mile for him or her.

Hello! I'm a educator and visual artist with many years of experience teaching and tutoring high school and college students. I have a BA in Political Science from New College of Florida and a MFA in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design. While I'm a photographer by trade, I also have a passion for and expertise in Math and the Natural Sciences -- as well as French and Spanish, having studied and worked in both Paris and Central America. While I'm proficient now, I struggled with both languages early on, and understand the challenges of both starting a new language and in moving from a conversational to a more proficient level. I'm also available for ACT and SAT test prep -- and work especially well with students who are visual learners (though I have a wide range of materials and resources for all styles of learning!).

I've been a mathematician and tutor for about 15 years. I have also taught mathematics at the college level for the past 7 years. My research touches on the interactions between math and theoretical computer science, as well as number theory (largely the study of prime numbers). I've taught courses ranging from basic arithmetic up through linear algebra and multivariable calculus. The second most exciting thing about mathematics is that moment when something totally opaque and confusing suddenly solidifies into crystal clarity. It's the sort of moment that makes you shout "aha!" or "eureka!". The most exciting thing about mathematics is sharing that experience with someone else.

I am a graduate of the public history program at the University of South Carolina, where I received an M.A. I am pursuing a career in historic preservation, because buildings and structures crucial to maintaining the culture of local and national society are constantly threatened. Throughout my graduate and undergraduate education, I worked in a teaching capacity, teaching sections of United States and Latin American History courses. With high scores being so crucial to student acceptance to top college programs, I am passionate about sharing the tips and strategies that helped me succeed on standardized tests. I especially enjoy teaching the Math sections of exams, because the subject boils down to learning and memorizing strategies that can be broadly applied. My strategy for standardized test preparation comes down to preparing the student not only for the material itself, but also for the experience of taking the tests. Success on standardized tests is as much an emotional exercise as an intellectual one. In my spare time, I enjoy playing the piano, card and board games, and watching NBA basketball.

For the last six years I have tutored and taught from French to physics and back again. As a bachelor's graduate with a chemistry/physics degree, I know full well what's required to succeed in those subjects.
