I graduated from Northern Arizona University where I received my Bachelor of Science in Elementary and Special Education. Upon graduation, I served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where I was able to teach and learn from the people in Oklahoma for a year and a half. After completing my mission work, I began my teaching career in Colorado. For 3 years, I taught students with disabilities ranging from learning disabilities to intellectual and physical disabilities. After getting married, I moved to Utah where I taught students with behavioral and emotional disabilities. I taught students grades Kindergarten through 4th grade in my 4 years of teaching. Therefore, I specialize in teaching young students with disabilities specifically in the core areas of reading, writing, mathematics, executive functioning, and behavior. However, I love to teach reading, especially to students who have dyslexia. I strongly believe that education is important to improve the quality of life for all people and I know that all people are capable of learning. While teaching in high school, I had the opportunity to teach writing classes at night at University of Phoenix. I really enjoy helping students with writing. I have a simple way of breaking down the writing process into basic chunks that help students understand and apply these ideas. I focus less on memorization of formulas and more on the reasons why the numbers are used. This approach also means that students are getting a deeper understanding and it makes it easier to apply their prior knowledge to new concepts.

During my undergraduate years, I tended to hang out with the math crowd, despite my status as a physics major. I joined math club at my university (NAU) and enjoyed subjects within math. Even today I will choose to read mathematics material over topics in science, which is a switch from my younger years. However, physics was the start of my passion for mathematics, and I hope share this sense of awe with you, or anyone I am teaching/assisting. I have been fortunate to have been given the opportunity to teach a calculus class, for two years, and every part of it has been rewarding. And for the past two consecutive summers the University of Arizona has given me the chance to connect with my science roots and conduct some cutting-edge optics research.
