I taught in Georgia for 28+ wonderful years. I completed a Doctorate in Education at Liberty University. My love of learning began at an early age and continues still. I have taught at all grade levels K-12 and have additional endorsements in Teaching students with Visual Impairments, Reading Specialist, Gifted Education, and English Language Learners. I am so excited to share my love of learning and help you discover yours as well.

I have an undergraduate degree in Journalism from Fort Valley State University and Master's of Education in Secondary English Education from Piedmont College, and a Doctorate of Education from Nova Southeastern University.I have taught students in the U.S. and overseas. Teaching overseas was one of the best experiences of my life. I've tutored students for standardized tests and help them feel confident in passing the assessment. My students enjoy working with me because I make learning fun. We do activities that students can not do during school time. We do fun activities that reinforce learning.I tutor English, Reading and Math. I am best at tutoring English and Reading grades 1 - 9, and Math grades 1 - 5. My favorite subjects to tutor are reading and writing because I enjoy reading and writing, but I also like elementary math.I believe when students have fun, they will learn any concept taught to them. I believe education is the vehicle to a child's future. My interests are reading, writing, cooking, traveling and enjoying time with family.
I am an AANP certified FNP. I graduated from the University of North Georgia in 2013. I practice in the outpatient primary care setting. Prior to becoming an NP I worked for 10 years as an RN in various hospital settings. My teaching experience includes teaching CNAs as an adjunct professor and tutoring kids with difficulty reading. I spend a great deal of my clinical time with patients educating them. I have also been a preceptor for RN and NP students.
I first fell in love with tutoring in high school, when I started working for a tutoring company as a volunteer high school tutor. Through college I would frequently go back to my hometown to tutor students from my alma mater. As a first year teacher I have gotten to take my love of tutoring to a new level, but missed having the ability to meet with students and help them get through difficult assignments in a setting that is less formal and more open to discussion and deeper understanding. That is why I came to Varsity Tutors! I love to help students learn and understand material that my be difficult for them, but I love to do it in a way that allows them to find an appreciation for the task at hand and better understand the way it will impact their lives in the future. If I get the opportunity to help just one person through this website, I will be happy.
I have several years experience in math education primarily with students grades 9-12 as a certified math teacher. I have tutored college students to help them through college algebra. I am an enthusiastic and dedicated educator who is committed to providing quality instruction that empowers all students while building a safe environment. My mission as an educator is simple: To provide the best for my students so they are ready for the world.
Since a young person I remember being fascinated by everything science. I played in nature everyday all day, exploring and analyzing everything from the soil my grandfather would grow his tomatoes in, to the morning dew that settled on my mother's flowers. I was so curious! My favorite words were"why" and "how." But what I loved more than anything is sharing the new things that I had learned to anyone who would listen. I always knew I would be a Science Educator.I have had the pleasure of supporting, tutoring, and teaching students with a wide range of academic and behavior levels, and demographics for 5 years. From high performing to low performing, autistic, hearing and speech impediments, and an array of emotional and mental health issues. My experience in a public title one school was interesting to say the least, and it prepared me for this big world of education.Becoming a grade level team leader, and being trained and working as an AVID enrichment teacher was a proud moment of success, only after being a teacher for two years. But, it was wining educational grant money, so that all of my students could engage in three hands on projects, that solidified my desire to teach, inspire, and encourage students to want to learn. It is my belief that everyone can learn and deserves the opportunity to explore, discover, and understand themselves and the world they live in. It is my goal to share my skills and talents as a teacher to inspire, motivate, and encourage students to be at their personal best academically and socially.
I am a Georgia native who recently relocated to Colorado. Previously I lived in New Haven, CT, where I worked with young adults who had just finished undergrad. I served as a mentor, helping each one make a decision about the future. I also worked with them on admissions essays and finding their voice.Writing is hard work. It is especially hard to be authentic and clear. It has been my greatest pleasure to watch my mentees work through the difficulty and come out with a piece of writing they are proud of. It is work I have loved and am excited to continue here in Colorado.I earned my Bachelor of Arts in 2007 from Piedmont College in Georgia, where I studied Philosophy and Religion. In 2010 I earned my Master of Arts in Religion from Yale University. My particular interest is the junction between literature and theology using the tools of textual criticism. In my studies I learned how important it is to be clear and concise in my writing.
My biography would be incomplete if I didn't begin with my life before teaching. I am a 60 year old widow who did not begin my teaching career until I was 41 years old. Before that, I was married and in Atlanta as a professional stage actor with big plans for an even larger career. I was perfectly content living with my husband and acting, when he got a job with Coretta Scott King, Martin Luther King Jr.'s widow. This was life-changing for both of us. My husband was a valued employee at the Martin Luther King Center for Nonviolent Social Change for the five years before his death. The experience of getting to know Mrs. King and her family, particularly Yolanda King, as well as many of the great Civil Rights leaders of the 1950s and 60s greatly influenced my worldview. I read many of King's books and sermons, finding myself inspired by his words; inspired to see how we can and should use our lives to improve the world. After my husband's death in an accident, I was disoriented and confused about what I wanted to do with my life for a long time. Theater and acting didn't consume me like they did before. The idea of finding more meaning and making the world a better place kept pushing me to think differently. After a few years of working with Georgia and Mississippi's artist-in-residence programs as a drama instructor, director and writer, I realized that I wanted to teach full-time.This meant I had to go back to college and take all of the math and science courses I avoided the first time around. I spent a year at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque working on finishing my bachelor's degree. Then, when my father became ill with terminal cancer, I returned to Georgia and enrolled in The University of Georgia in Athens. It wasn't particularly easy being a 33 year old student in college with 18 and 19 year olds. It was often lonely, but I can honestly say that I felt my late husband with me, guiding me through this new territory. I learned so much from him, I'll always be grateful. When my father died from cancer, I went back to acting for a short time and also worked for a while as a Pre-K teacher. Then I returned to UGA and finished my degree at the age of 40. I then started my teaching career in Fayette County, Georgia at Sandy Creek High School. I taught Drama and Speech and Communications the first two years. Then I became certified to teach English because they cut my teaching position in Drama. I taught English for two years, but I soon had to leave because my mother had a stroke.I had to move in with her and help her recuperate. While I was home, I taught a year at South Hall Middle School in Gainesville, GA. I didn't return after that year because I wanted to return to high school teaching. This year would have been my 14th year at Hart County High School, in N. E. Georgia, if it hadn't been for the Coronavirus. My 90 year old mother lives with me. Her health is frail; there is no way I could continue to teach in a school where students weren't required to wear masks and then come home to her. It was just too dangerous, so I left.I am thrilled that I will be able to continue to teach here with Varsity Tutors. It means the world to me to continue to try to better my little corner of the world.

In addition, I also have extensive experience in human resources, writing, reading, editing, and communications.I love tutoring because I get to work one on one with students to meet their individual needs. I want to be a valuable resource in the lives of those I can help, using my experience as a student and as a teacher. Furthermore, I want to be an aid in whatever they want to achieve. Nothing makes me feel prouder than seeing my students succeed. They teach me as much as I teach them. We learn together!

I am committed to maintaining a thorough knowledge of instructional standards, practices, and methodologies for the education of children. My passion is helping students. I appreciate the way that tutoring allows a one-on-one connection and the ability to track success that is not always possible in a classroom setting. In my free time I enjoy hiking, reading, cooking and spending time with my family.
Over the past 6 years of teaching high school math, I have learned many ways to present a variety of information. I have tutored one-on-one for 3 of those 6 years, and enjoy the experience of working individually with students and seeing their progress in the classroom. Making math enjoyable by relating the subject to students' everyday lives is something that I strive to do with both the students I teach and those that I tutor.
