I want to show my students the joy of learning, as cliche as that might sound. I guess this stems from my own love of learning, but tutoring lets me share this love in a one-on-one, individual scenario. Seeing as my desired career is to be a college professor, tutoring allows me to get an early edge on my teaching skills as well.

I was born and raised in Memphis, TN, where eventually I went to earn a BS at Rhodes College. After struggling between dual my loves of science and literature, I graduated in 2014 with a degree in Biology with a minor in English. I participated in several research projects studying animal behavior during and after college before I became interested in pursuing a career in environmental education. For half the year, I work full time as a park ranger providing education and visitor services seasonally at national parks and public lands. I teach curriculum-based education to visiting schools, and I answer general questions to the public, on topics ranging from ecology, geology, and history, to where to find the bathrooms.I have worked as a personal tutor since high school, teaching a variety of subjects to all ages of students.Since college between my seasonal positions of work, I have created full time work for myself for students on summer vacation, teaching math, writing, English, and science to students in elementary, middle, and high school. When I tutor, I'm hoping to empower students to think and analyze to find their own solutions. I don't want to show them the right way to do things, but rather the right way for THEM to do things. Our brains work differently, and we find the same right answers in different ways!Like your typical millennial, I enjoy traveling, but I've really made a full time life of it. Since college, I haven't lived in one place longer than 7 months. My seasonal homes have included Tennessee, North Carolina, California, Wyoming, South Africa, and the coast of Oregon. My primary recreational activity in all of these places is hiking, and I've been lucky to live in some beautiful natural spaces for outdoor recreation. When I'm not working or hiking, I'm reading, writing, sleeping, or trying to learn to learn how to be a decent cook.

I am passionate about helping students feel more confident and successful in their learning. During my undergraduate studies I tutored peers in French. After graduating from college I taught conversational English in Paris, which nurtured my interest in helping English Language Learners. I love explaining the shades of meaning in words, strengthening students' reading comprehension, and building their writing skills. I believe patience and kindness are key to student success. As a graduate student in a field called Learning Technologies, I am constantly discovering which educational approaches best help students.I am a great tutor because I believe in finding out why students have certain road blocks to learning and crafting an approach that helps them overcome those obstacles. I am patient and I understand the importance of explaining a concept without assuming prior knowledge or making the learner feel patronized. In my free time I enjoy yoga, running, playing with dogs, and checking out design blogs.

After graduation, I have remained close to academia by auditing classes in the areas of Anatomy and Physiology, Organ Systems, Histology, Embryology, and Neuroscience. My introduction to tutoring first occurred in my second year of high school. Furthermore, I also worked with elementary- and middle-school age children on social skills outside the classroom as well as all subjects inside the classroom. Throughout college, I found my niche in tutoring test preparation and science, leading to my recommendation to serve as an Introductory Biology Teaching Assistant for three years at my undergraduate institution. My passion for the areas of Science, English, and Math are reflected in my tutoring experiences. I have developed a variety of techniques to tackle each of these challenging and very different subjects, and I find that my students enjoy the tools I use to help them understand difficult concepts in a more relatable manner!Lifelong learning is of utmost importance to me, and I firmly believe that having faith in the future of my students leads to their success. When I was a student, I totally misunderstood the teaching position. From my perspective, teachers simply appeared at 7:40, at the strike of a bell, and disappeared at 3:00, with a strike of the same bell. These automatons materialized purely for pedagogical purposes, then evaporated when their time had run out. Of course, the reality of their situation was always much different. Nearly all teachers work tirelessly for their students, rarely thinking about much other than teaching--especially in their first few years. (I know, because I became a first-time teacher.) When I began teaching, this knowledge spiraled me into a state of profound reflection. For the first time, I took seriously all of the pressures on this position--out of school political fighting, in school political fighting, funding shortages, etc. It was not clear to me at the time, but teachers do one of the most difficult jobs and receive the least amount of respect for it--not to mention a salary that rarely reflects their efforts and impact. For me, tutoring excises some of these political issues, allowing me to focus entirely upon the task at hand--instructing one student on a particular subject. It's liberating and fun and incredibly rewarding.

I graduated from Rhodes College in 2019, where I majored in neuroscience and minored in English (concentration: fiction writing). As the oldest of three girls, I found myself naturally playing the role of tutor as a child. One of my sisters has a developmental disability, which motivated me to pursue other opportunities tutoring and teaching life skills to children and adults with disabilities. Additionally, I have privately tutored students in grades 4-11 in a range of academic subjects, including English, reading, writing, science, and math. I find supporting students' growth to be immensely satisfying, and I plan to pursue a graduate degree in education. In my free time, I love to bake, write short stories and poetry, and play badminton in the park.

My name is Jackson, and I have a passion for math and physics (I know, super nerdy). I graduated with a Bachelor's in Physics and a minor in mathematics, and I love helping students understand concepts in both these fields. I have one year of tutoring experience in college/AP-level physics and math (particularly calculus), and I tutor all levels of math and physics. I am a firm believer that there is no such thing as a "math" person. Math and Science are for everyone! That being said, I know these topics can be intimidating to many. I aim to help students understand the foundations of these subjects and prepare them to be better STEM learners.

I graduated from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee in May of 2022. I was an Educational Studies and History double major with a French minor. As an education major, I was a part of a wide variety of classrooms from elementary math to high school history. Currently, I am studying Spanish in Mexico after two years teaching English in Guadeloupe, France to sharpen my foreign language skills and ESL teaching capabilities in preparation for multilingual and multicultural educational spaces. Upon my return to the United States, I will pursue my teaching license in secondary history. Thus, I am passionate about teaching History, English, and French. I also excel at teaching and academic writing. In addition to my experience guiding students in traditional classrooms, I have taught yoga for the past two years. This has involved planning classes for large groups in addition to providing personal assists to students throughout their practice. With my experience teaching others in both the traditional academic classroom and the nontraditional yoga classroom, I have learned there is no better way to assist others in their growth than meeting individuals exactly where they are. As a result, my teaching and tutoring styles are designed to capitalize upon what students already know so that they may build upon said knowledge and achieve more. Further, my teaching and tutoring are based on our humanity as people and thus there is plenty of conversation, inquiry, and room for mistakes. I believe education is an opportunity for creating possibilities, and as such I couldn't be more grateful to help others imagine their future possibilities.

As a Computer Science student in the process of pursuing a PhD, I know how important it is to understand the ins-and-outs of your classes. Not only will you be better off understanding the deeper meanings, but you might also find your passion with learning. If that is not the case, it's all good, I enjoy practical applications but I also enjoy the theory behind things. If you are having trouble understanding specific subjects or yo u just want some clarification I am happy to help.
